I've never had a problem with my Kahler trems. I get much more pull up on the bar and it takes much more abuse. You have to know what you are doing with a Kahler, they take a lot of maintenance and understanding before diving (no pun intended). I highly doubt Slayer would swear by a system that goes out of tune so easily.
I just wondered the Kahler locking nut doesn't work well with floating tremolos like the Floyd and the Kahler but wouldn't it be good for standard tremolos like a strat tremolo or a Bigsby that way it keeps the original nut and tone intact but also ads tuning stability
@xRAKDOZx that setup won't work because the two nuts are based on the same idea with the pressure on the strings and if you do that if you don't have fine tunners you won't have a perfect tuning. cheers mate!
there R 2 very important things that i think were left out of this very well done documentary, 1st the tunning behavior of the tremolos when a string brakes, i noticed on floyds i use, the redistribution of strength after a broken string messes up the tunning of D guitar, which doesnt happend at all with D Kahler because of its construction. this is very important when playing live D 2nd is that when bending on floyd D other strings go out of tune momentarily it also doesnt happen with kahler
I have 2 warlocks a bich and an STIII with the kahler flyer and i have never noticed any kind of problems, my b.c rich r all around 25 years old and N.J series, i cant say anything about new kahler systems but the old ones do a much better job than any of my other guitars equiped with a floyd, exept 4 my mockingbird st, that 1 came wit an original floyd but its a 2009. the wide availability of licenced floyds that are not good at all is enough 4 me 2 take a couple of stars from the chart to it

I happen to like my Kahler's quite a bit. I have nothing against Floyd Rose systems , i like them too. But i believe this was done by someone that is partial to Floyd's. Kahler's , like Floyd's , are NOT perfect in any way shape or form. However , I believe Kahler's offer far more and superior , personalized set-up options than Floyd's. And for that reason alone i prefer Kahler's. (Also in my opinion , they feel smoother)
can you make a floyd rose setup video? i have a gotoh floyd and it doesn't flutter much ( i suspect it was the spring or the setup, it also a lil bit too stiff, out of tune slightly when played) your setup is like perfect!
Wow. I have a guitar that is equipped with a kahler that is also at least 5 years old. If I wanted to I could use the tremolo bar for hours and it would still be in tune somehow.
You should really try Ibanez 's new Edge-Zero bridge! It's a very dependable floyd rose tremolo with the added improvement that all strings stay in tune when you make bendings across the fretboard. In fact the strings stay in tune even if you break a string!!!So you really have the positive effects of a fixed bridge while being able to use the tremolo whenever you need to. The only drawback is that it needs the same use of power for pull ups as well as dive bombs..

intonation adjustment in floyd is very hard and torturing. There is a device you fix to saddles, it enables adjustment without releasing the strings to move saddles. you screw the device until getting the right position for fine intonation.then you screw the saddles... I couldn't find it ...
Hi , thank you for all of your videos , its really a great job you have done =) . I just wanted to ask you a question. I have an Edge Pro tremolo on my Ibanez, and I saw a problem when I do Dives , an pull-ups. When i do dives the string loose tuning and when i do pull ups , it ups de tuning. I don't know really why the lockin tuns a correctly tighten and on the bridge the strings don't go off and are good fixed. Could you help me to fix that problem please ? =)
@wtdakata No problem. It really is a good idea being able to lock it up, cause I hardly ever use a trem :P Just happened to be on the only guitar I liked :)
To drop d or c the floyd, you have to adjust the anchor which holds the springs in the back of the guitar. A drop d or c tuning will take tension off the strings causing the Floyd to sit back. Loosening the anchor screws will allow the Floyd to float level in the body. This will also happen if you change to a different string gage, loosen or tighten the anchor screws as needed.
hey dmo which tremolo is better for drop tuning? like, i want to be able to play heavy metal stuff in drop C and D standard, and i want to also use a whammy bar. is either one very hard to get in tune? cuz id think itd b just like tuning it to standard, but people say theres a certain "trick" to it
@UCHIHAITACHI30 That's actually a preferred set up for most. The Floyd nut is considered superior in tuning stability. That being said, some like the Kahler nut because it sits behind your real nut, keeping the tone of the guitar the same.
hey man, for the first time in a long time I checked youtube for a good video review on these to pick one out and figured the normal stupid video. You sir, have made such a good comparison video that makes it so easy and simple to make the comparison and must say, other people looking to make videos like this should take your videos as an example. You fully answered all my questions...
DMO. I just bought a original Floyd Rose which come in a box. It printed Made In Germany on the box but when I take out the back plate and there isnt the word Made In Germany at the sustain block. its only write Us Patent (numbers) and block size. So, do you think this Floyd Rose is made by Schaller?
about trem blocks, it is worth mentioning the Tremol-no system. it's a replacement to the "claw", or what stresses the springs below the guitar, controlled by screws. there's the claw itself, and an attachment that's kind of a piston that goes between the claw and the sustain block. on this piston are 3 screws. theres some complicated stuff with it so i'm gonna explain it simply. you can tighten all the screws and you have a hardtail, as the piston locks the sustain block. there's also dive-only
I have a Kahler a BC RIch Wartribe made in China. If I were to lock the Tremolo in so that its a fixed Bridge. And then tune it to, say, drop B or C standard tuning. Then after a while tune it back to standard(What its set up to) Would I be screwing anything up?
4:25 The kahlers flutter sounds much more audible and natural, whereas the floyd rose sounds very processed and rapid, sounds like a laser rifle lolz.
i have solved the bending/diving issue by using Big Bends' String Sleeves (cut in half), so that THEY ride the cam, & NOT the strings. i no longer have ANY probs switching between finger bending & whammy diving, and i don't even have a string lock on my lp/sg. as an added precaution, i VERY occasionally use big bend's nut sauce where the string sleeves curve around the cam. trust me, i have had NO tuning issues since doing this! i can bend & dive ALL DAY LONG, & stay in tune...
I'm Through With Vintage Tremolos!!! I Was Using One Last Night And It Sounded Like It Broke!!! I Took The Back Plate Off And The Spring Came Off, But That Wasn't The Bad Thing!!! The Bad Thing Is The Tremolo System Shattered!!! It Was Chipped And It Had Cracked!!! All I Did Was A Simple Dive Bomb And Poof... It Broke!!! No More Fender Tremolos, I'll Stick With Floyd Rose And Kahler!!!
3:35 I have such a hard time keeping my bar tight... the plastic piece that keeps the weird nut secure on the bar split but is obviously glued down... it makes it impossible to keep the bar tight at all and to flutter exept for just a couple of noisy times
yeah i stripped the locking nut system a while ago but i didnt know that was the problem so i had to take it back to get fixed and i got new strings and i can finnally whammy again but im not sure but i think the strings keep untuning and its pissing me off any advice?
Floyd Rose Is The Only Tremolo I Will Use And Trust!!! When I Use A Floyd Rose, I Never Have To Worry About It Coming Out Of Tune!!! As For Every Other Tremolo I've Tried Out At Music Stores, They Didn't Do So Good!!! Floyd Rose #1 Tremolo!!!
No they are not all made by Floyd Rose. My OFR was made by Schaller that I put on my RG350mdx which had a pos Edge III on it. Plus I added Grotoh mini locking rotomatics. I put a set of Clear Tones on it and its great now. And I know its like upgrading a Yugo but its my Yugo to upgrade. I can reuse the OFR and the tuners at a later date if I get another project. Plus I liked the black on black guitar anyway.
@pegasus52497 the floyd rose tremolo is made by different companies, so there are like different versions sort of.... there all still a floating bridge, but the companies make then slightly different. he says the original floyd rose by schaller is the best. it's like someone in france invented "french fries". but every restuarant makes them a bit different.
Would a floyd type nut position behind a regular nut work (with pressure bar too obviously) drilled/glued down so the strings line up into it like a regular floyd nut?
Flutter can be affected by numerous factors. It's important to remember that on Original Floyds, there has to be perfect balance between string tension and spring tension, meaning, the baseplate should be perfectly level with the body on models with necks parallel to the plane of body. On tilted necks, you should line the baseplate up with the angle of the neck. Knife edges need to be sharp as do pivot points.
Yup. I have 3 or 4 Schaller licensed copies (even though Schaller makes the Original, their licensed version has hardened steel inserts and different string lock screws) that flutter just fine. Ironically, I discovered flutter accidentally on a Kahler version of the pivot style trem.
Great comparison. I was wondering if it would be worth switching to a Kahler bridge but I guess not. My Floyd still gives me crap though. The strings pop out of the saddles way too often, also, whenever I divebomb it goes out of tune but it returns to pitch if I pull up again. Haven't played that guitar for about a year because of these problems.
How can anyone honestly say that it is not a hassle to change strings on a floyd rose bridge? I bought a guitar with a fixed bridge because I was tried of dealing with floating bridges and leveling them and having them immediately go out of tune when breaking a string. As far as the Kahler going out of tune with a bend, my fixed bridge guitar will go out of tune on a bend if I do it enough times to the same string and high enough. I my opinion this is crap.
yes although I heard the Kahler you need a special hook or something I forget exactly what its called so correct me if im wrong.. but the floyd rose can use them without anything special.
i have a fender squier strat and i want to know that if i install a original floyd rose tremolo i'll have to make a hole in the front to make divebombs because i am a little confused plz reply
Just save up for a guitar with a floyd rose. Squier strats aren't worth modifying. You get amazing quality for good price with ibanez. The ibanez rg 350 dx for example can be picked up for about €450 or less and is WELL worth it.
I own both and the Kahler beats the Floyd hands down on several aspects of tuning. First - you intonation does not go out when you bend since the pulley's keep the distance properly calibrated. Second, the Floyd in a fully floating position is prone to sticking and not returning to 100% the same position. Last the Kahler has many adjustment options and service points to keep everything just how you want it. I'd give the floyd a 7.4/10 and the Kahler a 9/10.
yeah but is either better for tuning. i looks almost impossible to tune a flotd rose guitar up or down un like on my fixed bridge strat. is khalers any easier?
Hey i was using my Floyd today and the whammy bar became loose and wobbled around i unscrewed it and tried to take it out and it was jammed into the hole it goes to. So i unscrewed the whole thing out of the bridge. and it turns out the bar is locked in the little hole it screws onto. how can i fix this?
If the rollers are very high, they may be causing friction which is keeping the cam from balancing properly. When a roller is very high there is more pressure from the string exerted on the roller and therefore more friction between the roller and its axle pin.
Handmade versus factory made. Both are USA models. All models are exactly the same. quality is not the issue. Its about labor rates. machinists cost more than a factory worker.
Great series of vids. I believe in part one you said the Kerry King Warlock kahler system was a hybrid? What do you think of the 2200 and or 2300 series kahlers. I am getting a Peavey HP Special CT USA with licensed floyd. Going to replace that with a Floyd, but was wondering about Kahler.
My Jackson SL2H soloist has a an original floyd rose which had the pinging issue you mentioned on your video. The solution for this was to buy a new arm system for the trem. The pinging is caused by the arm not being properly fitted and sitting either loose or high in its pocket and hitting against the walls of the pocket during flutters. Great videos keep up the good work.
thanks mate..your vids are really helpful..i was thinking of buying a bc rich kerry king v2 and an esp ltd m100fm..and i think i know what to buy now..cheers!
i have a charvel similar to yours and it would be awesome if u made a video comparing your new kahler 2300 on ur LTD to the old one on the charvel. just a suggestion :)
Yeah me too, but after all of this technical shit I've decided to go with a simpler instrument all together...the triangle. God I hope Floyd Rose doesn't get a hold of one of these. LOL
The Ibanez trems for people like Joe Satriani and Steve Vai are only sort of floyd's in my opinion. I guess it does the same thing, but the Ibanez trems are designed completely differently.
And the trem on the JEM's could rival the kahler for smoothness. Seriously, it's that good.
0k.. I was wondering if i can change the kahler tremolo on my guitar for a schalled floyd rose.
I have a bc rich wartribe too its the same guitar that you used on the video so i want to change my kahler system for a floyd rose tremolo system. I dont know if that is possible. Thanks
Although most of you argue the fact that the floyd rose is better or the kahler...I personaly dont want to bother with all that so im gonna stick to my fixed bridge and string through body with the tune O matic.
brother, how to get those nice feel on floyd? i have ibanez JS100 with TRS2 floyd rose tremolo style equiped. i want to know how a pro set the tremolo up. i want to get those flutter effect without tighten the string too much. regards
Not exactly the most 'scientific' test but a good introduction to the general areas of criticism... I think the vid if anything highlights the significant differences in two otherwise ostensibly similar tremolos. I think the kahler would suit my playing a lot better as i prefer to use it gently as an alternative to string bending. The floyd rose is clearly the most 'resilient', though if only there could be some subtle engineering tweak in the kahler to improve the string bending/tuning issue.
It's a hell of a tough call. You cant really say a Kahler is crap, Kerry King's been sportin that for a long time. (Now I think he uses a Floyd with Dean, correct me if wrong) The dives he got were no where near as weak as these. I like Kahler cause it feels less tensious when you go for those high bends, as a Floyd when I want to REALLY get into it it feels like I cant just take every bit of strength I have to it. Personally Im an Ibanez fanatic. Edge Pro=The way to go. Tuning stability is #1
i had a jackson dinky pro series as you will see on my video's and the tuning stability was dreadful so i traded it in for the b.c rich warlock shown in the video and its absolutely fenominal so i think i will stick with a kahler
Yeah, that shit is cool, esp. when the trem is totally working! I actually don't use my trem much anymore, but I keep it in good shape, so I can slam it when I want to.
This is by far the best video series I've seen regarding Kahler vs Floyd bridges.
I have an Ibanez RG560 with the original Edge bridge. Problem for me is with the knife edges and the trem arm hole. Instead of replacing the posts or bridge, I use a bit of Dupont Teflon on them, but I clean the areas free of metal shavings first. For the arm hole, I use a medium strength threadlocker to keep it from wobbling. I change the plastic bushings when needed on the trem arm, and have a 2nd arm as backup.
I beg to differ. The last two "wins" for Floyd should've garnered only one star each (Flutter, string breakage) and he gave the Floyd two each. Frankly, the fluttering for the kahler sounded almost as good as the Floyd, hence only worth one star. Overall, I agree with DevTrev, I'm getting a Bigsby. Other alternatives: There's also the StepMax and Stetsbar, and let's not rule out Gibson's Vibrola! ;-P
the stetsbar feels alot nicer than the kahler and requires no modification whatsover to the guitar it is put on,the tuning stability is also excelent as because the whole thing moves in a straight line the only friction point is the nut and that can be locked or replaced with a rolling nut,the only down side is that the range is only about an octave down and a fifth up.
alguna recomendacion para aflojar un poco mi floyd rose porque esta duro como la patada de una mula o asi es de duro el floyd rose? yo siento que el floyd de joe satriani es muy suave y manejable.
That is a really great video! I've seen a lot of videos on youtube and yours seem like they are made by a professional. others just seem like a guy making a video for the hell of it. Keep up the good work.

What were you saying about Floyd manufacturers? Aren't they all made by Floyd Rose? ._.
pegasus52497 1 year ago
@pegasus52497 the floyd rose tremolo is made by different companies, so there are like different versions sort of.... there all still a floating bridge, but the companies make then slightly different. he says the original floyd rose by schaller is the best. it's like someone in france invented "french fries". but every restuarant makes them a bit different.

Would a floyd type nut position behind a regular nut work (with pressure bar too obviously) drilled/glued down so the strings line up into it like a regular floyd nut?
Jgrafix7 1 year ago
is the floyd rose special bridge an original or a liscensed?
arvybindra 1 year ago
Flutter can be affected by numerous factors. It's important to remember that on Original Floyds, there has to be perfect balance between string tension and spring tension, meaning, the baseplate should be perfectly level with the body on models with necks parallel to the plane of body. On tilted necks, you should line the baseplate up with the angle of the neck. Knife edges need to be sharp as do pivot points.
vector350 1 year ago
can you flutter with a licenced floyd rose
therockmannumber1 2 years ago
Yup. I have 3 or 4 Schaller licensed copies (even though Schaller makes the Original, their licensed version has hardened steel inserts and different string lock screws) that flutter just fine. Ironically, I discovered flutter accidentally on a Kahler version of the pivot style trem.

my 2 kaler stay in all the time..love them no stiffness
michaelpeacestewart 2 years ago

Just save up for a guitar with a floyd rose. Squier strats aren't worth modifying. You get amazing quality for good price with ibanez. The ibanez rg 350 dx for example can be picked up for about €450 or less and is WELL worth it.

your background music is pokemon's n64 game's background music xd i knew i knew that song haha xD
em0p0wa 2 years ago 2
I own both and the Kahler beats the Floyd hands down on several aspects of tuning. First - you intonation does not go out when you bend since the pulley's keep the distance properly calibrated. Second, the Floyd in a fully floating position is prone to sticking and not returning to 100% the same position. Last the Kahler has many adjustment options and service points to keep everything just how you want it. I'd give the floyd a 7.4/10 and the Kahler a 9/10.
Mix2rduane 2 years ago
yeah but is either better for tuning. i looks almost impossible to tune a flotd rose guitar up or down un like on my fixed bridge strat. is khalers any easier?

Hey i was using my Floyd today and the whammy bar became loose and wobbled around i unscrewed it and tried to take it out and it was jammed into the hole it goes to. So i unscrewed the whole thing out of the bridge. and it turns out the bar is locked in the little hole it screws onto. how can i fix this?

it was the easiest to move until the trem king came out
otakumei 2 years ago
the wammi world guys says thats because of the saddles are too high
cobraopts7 2 years ago
you forgot to list many reasons why the floating floyd is a disadvantage:
-harder to setup, especially on 7 string... trying to compensate each string until the bridge in tune is a tenfold problem
-strings lifted further away from the pickup during dives
-sharp problem relevant to palm mute pressure
-string breakage is catastrophic, cant continue song, yet kahler fine tuners' torque can save you
-cannot quickly adjust tuning for jamming for different auditions, must transpose, torturous
zaplauncher 2 years ago 2
If the rollers are very high, they may be causing friction which is keeping the cam from balancing properly. When a roller is very high there is more pressure from the string exerted on the roller and therefore more friction between the roller and its axle pin.
wammiworld 2 years ago 2
Handmade versus factory made. Both are USA models. All models are exactly the same. quality is not the issue. Its about labor rates. machinists cost more than a factory worker.

Great series of vids. I believe in part one you said the Kerry King Warlock kahler system was a hybrid? What do you think of the 2200 and or 2300 series kahlers. I am getting a Peavey HP Special CT USA with licensed floyd. Going to replace that with a Floyd, but was wondering about Kahler.
PrsFenderJackson1980 2 years ago
My Jackson SL2H soloist has a an original floyd rose which had the pinging issue you mentioned on your video. The solution for this was to buy a new arm system for the trem. The pinging is caused by the arm not being properly fitted and sitting either loose or high in its pocket and hitting against the walls of the pocket during flutters. Great videos keep up the good work.

ok i haven't played a kahler but for me the softest trem i have played is the am std fender strat bridge

2 questions -does soldering the string efect the sound and does the floyd and the kahler do bassicaly the same thing ? thnx
sk8bordjake 2 years ago
Not exactly the most 'scientific' test but a good introduction to the general areas of criticism... I think the vid if anything highlights the significant differences in two otherwise ostensibly similar tremolos. I think the kahler would suit my playing a lot better as i prefer to use it gently as an alternative to string bending. The floyd rose is clearly the most 'resilient', though if only there could be some subtle engineering tweak in the kahler to improve the string bending/tuning issue.
Uberloinvongenchler 2 years ago
these are great videos but that music is really getting to me haha
dave2169 2 years ago 2
It's a hell of a tough call. You cant really say a Kahler is crap, Kerry King's been sportin that for a long time. (Now I think he uses a Floyd with Dean, correct me if wrong) The dives he got were no where near as weak as these. I like Kahler cause it feels less tensious when you go for those high bends, as a Floyd when I want to REALLY get into it it feels like I cant just take every bit of strength I have to it. Personally Im an Ibanez fanatic. Edge Pro=The way to go. Tuning stability is #1
GuitarGodReborn 2 years ago
The main reason why I want a Floyd rose trem is because the major tuning stability.
I was thinking about getting an Ibanez S with the ZR bridge it is so killer I love everything about it.
anutoldlegend89 2 years ago
i had a jackson dinky pro series as you will see on my video's and the tuning stability was dreadful so i traded it in for the b.c rich warlock shown in the video and its absolutely fenominal so i think i will stick with a kahler
KHALER'S THE WINNER IN MY OPINION
connorh3644 2 years ago
Yeah, that shit is cool, esp. when the trem is totally working! I actually don't use my trem much anymore, but I keep it in good shape, so I can slam it when I want to.
DrTaz 2 years ago
This is by far the best video series I've seen regarding Kahler vs Floyd bridges.
I have an Ibanez RG560 with the original Edge bridge. Problem for me is with the knife edges and the trem arm hole. Instead of replacing the posts or bridge, I use a bit of Dupont Teflon on them, but I clean the areas free of metal shavings first. For the arm hole, I use a medium strength threadlocker to keep it from wobbling. I change the plastic bushings when needed on the trem arm, and have a 2nd arm as backup.
DrTaz 2 years ago 2
What about a bit of cotton instead of ChapStick on the Kahler trem?
krivatakirka 2 years ago
The string would not vibrate and the roller wouldn't roll.
TheReaper0218 2 years ago
How come whenever the floyd wins anything he gives it one star and if the khaler wins he gives it two? Very suspicious.
gjew92 2 years ago
I beg to differ. The last two "wins" for Floyd should've garnered only one star each (Flutter, string breakage) and he gave the Floyd two each. Frankly, the fluttering for the kahler sounded almost as good as the Floyd, hence only worth one star. Overall, I agree with DevTrev, I'm getting a Bigsby. Other alternatives: There's also the StepMax and Stetsbar, and let's not rule out Gibson's Vibrola! ;-P
HKExpat 2 years ago
the stetsbar feels alot nicer than the kahler and requires no modification whatsover to the guitar it is put on,the tuning stability is also excelent as because the whole thing moves in a straight line the only friction point is the nut and that can be locked or replaced with a rolling nut,the only down side is that the range is only about an octave down and a fifth up.
