Dear Scorberg, Malick actually studied philosophy at University. Do u realise what that means in terms of what u have just claimed to be Malick's underlying message in the film? You may be misplacing your views with Malick's here.
@funkeykong Just because you study philosophy and not theology doesn't mean that you are not inclined more towards religion. Bishop Fulton Sheen wrote his dissertation on the Blessed Mother but got his PHD in philosophy and not theology. It is a plain fact: Malick is a Catholic and always was. Look it up online (it may take you a while though). Malick was going to write part of his dissertation on Heidegger, who was an existentialist, but was influenced by Plato, Aristotle & even St. Augustine.
@snillocgrom In all honesty the man is very seclusive and not much is known about him. I think his father is of assyrian descent and Christian. I think his mother was Catholic though, that's where his roots came in.
You can see why the natives of this continent fought so hard to keep the land. So untouched and wild and free. Now people are rebelling against their own civilization cause it brings us so much sorrow and doubt.
Terrence Malick is a Catholic. This opening voice over is so critical to the rest of the film. The film can read as a biblical history and analyzation of our world. "Spirit" at the beginning of this is refers to the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is one with the Blessed Virigin, so Malick is placing Mary at the center of this film. And being a Catholic, my interpretation of what Malick is getting at with this film is the importance of Mary and he shows it through Pochantas.
each time, i watch that opening, i shiver and i dream of an earth with no pollution , with respect of nature and peace. Maybe i'm too naive. Love . Maybe i'm not?
just reminds me of how far america has come from those times...with today's oil spill -- and plenty of people who still think sucking black liquid out of the depths of earth is still the solution.
I suspect that The New World portrays Native Americans in a highly accurate light in comparison to other films - beautifully strong and well adapted to the physical demands of living in a natural environment.
Much like how Office Space portrays Modern Americans in a highly accurate light - victims of an unnatural and technologically-based environment lol.
land is for all not one, two, three or more but all. there should be no lines on the map. there should be no greed for if all worked together the world would have all the food and clean water we need. and our health would will be better because we would all care for each other and work in safe enviroment for a good cause and so would have no need for money. This would be love.
I share your sentiment, but it totally negates basic human nature. We, as a species, are covetous, deceitful and wasteful - and yet we do have the capacity to do exactly what you say. But you must realize, even in your star trek utopia, that there are villains.
i cant help but comment... you're native american and you feel THIS movie properly portrays your people... what the hell are you talking about. native americans nowadays run casinos, live on reservations and are discriminated horribly. they have the highest obesity and one of the highest suicide rates second to rural farmers.
this is film is about native americans past... a culture you are historically bound to, but certainly not a part of.
There was more inter-tribal warfare then people think.

@Scorberg I thought Malick's family was Syriac Christian and just sort of "adopted" catholicism when his grandfather came to the US.
