Elvis is only singing this song in the original version. Ewan MacColl a British traditional singer/song writer wrote this song for Peggy Seeger who later became his wife. Roberta Flack's version is the one everyone else tries to sing ;-) Elvis finalizes this version with his own Elvis touch.
no offense and i love elvis been to memphois twice but this song blows. JEELPRAS, JEEPLERS. jeepers. its' a crap song like my commentary, OMG jsut horrible.
@margondine@simpson2221 Not quite, it was written by scottish singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl, who was a person of major artistic integrity than Mr. Presley (created by the media, fed by the media, made an idol by the media, nevertheless a good singer)
He spent months, if not years touring tiny halls and venues in hick towns with just his own voice and guitar, Bill Black's bass and Scotty Moore's guitar as backing before he was anywhere near a TV studio.
Good God - what a miserable arrangement of a such a beautifully penned song. Of all the remakes, I understand this is the only version that the original author ever really liked... his talent was clearly under the bars, not between them.
Elvis writers butchered this arrangement. he should have sang it over roberta flacks arrangement, he would have made it an instant classic instead of a hillbilly pop POS. sorry you were surronded by such incompetant fools Elvis.
yeah but it is a cover for Peggy Seeger. So who elvis did it for is kinda pointless, as he cvered it. If i recite poetry to a girl its nice but doesnt make me a hero
But Elvis, putting together the sounds that he did, overcoming incredible odds, makes him a hero to many including Bob Marley, The Beatles, Bono, Eddie Murphy, Eminem, Bill Clinton, that Japanese Prime Minister. Elvis said "ambition is a dream with a V-8 engine." He was an inspiration to millions. Still is.I wish I could have bought my parents a house when I was 22. Don't you? In my book he can "cover" any song he wants. He was a great producer. Learned lots from Sam Phillips.
"The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" is a 1957 folk song written by political singer/songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger, who was later to become his wife. At the time the couple were lovers, although MacColl was married to someone else.
funny..i think she looks hotter now than ever..lol.. also did you notice the colonel had a hat and cigar just like winston churchill.everyone gets theyre great ideas from somewhere.peace

You're right. I just read that in Grualnick's Careless Love. Joyce was the girl who worked at the House Armed Services Committee he met in1969. He saw her again the same night he met Barbara Leigh in Aug.1970, but they had a fight, They finally slept together when he went on the Washington trip to get the badge from Nixon. A little know fact about that trip!

I wouldn't say Elvis was created by the media.
He spent months, if not years touring tiny halls and venues in hick towns with just his own voice and guitar, Bill Black's bass and Scotty Moore's guitar as backing before he was anywhere near a TV studio.
