  • Do want to dance goes back before the Beach Boys. Jim O

  • @OakesJD1947 The earliest version I know of is by Bobby Freeman. I'm not sure if that version was in "American Graffiti" movie.

By the way, there is a little bongo solo missing at the start of THIS posting of the Mamas & Papas version.

  • @christopher60s Where can I find the image in the opening??? I want that cartoon of them on a shirt!

  • I was born in 1990....trust me....THIS! is music....the "music" that is made these days does belong in the toilet. Any smart person would know this.

  • Jens lekman

  • EXCELENTE CANCION THE MAMA´S AND PAPA´S

  • Well, the Beach Boys have finally been beaten at one of thier own songs....harmony-wise that is!

  • The video shows what happens when you f around with your partner.

  • Christopher...thank you for the information regarding the bathroom...typical for the times. Just a bit of clarification...the original song that they and Beach Boys covered was performed in 1958 by Bobby Freeman.

  • Christopher...Thank You Very Much for posting this incredible rendition/cover. Too bad THIS version didn't go higher!!! M&Ps at their best. I don't think one could find a better, more pure singing voice than Denny's. We had the album (from the start) and wore this song out...it remains my favorite of all time (and not many people are aware of it). Thanks again...good job.

  • are they all dead?

  • creepy.

  • Looks like Michelle is pissed in the doorway. Probably for good reason.

  • que bonitas voces qe buen trabajo

  • God, this group could SING!

  • This music is magic.

But there's still some magic out there. It may not be as mainstream as the some of the older good stuff was, but it's there. :)

  • @hookahclouds

The music of the 60s/70s came to us--we didnt have to go looking for it

  • @sodimite: Today's "music" isn't really music at all.

  • i have a different version

  • THOSE DAYS WERE HEAVEN.

  • Dennty allways had the decision-what a little man-no,not a man at all.

  • at 0:08 is that Scott McKenzie down in the left corner ??

  • @dariloco87 probably

  • i dig this version but i cant get over the fact the guy who sang this song had sex with is own child.............makes me sick. im giving it a thumbs down

  • @TheManolakis sad as anything, not to mention shooting her up with H also. I could not listen to their songs last year for two weeks, once the news broke out. So I try to listen to Denny's vocals and Cass and try not to think about the obvious.

  • Amo the mamas and the papas!!

  • Love the picture of Denny with the guitar at 0:33

  • Denny Doherty: one of the great, great under-apprecaited voices in all of music. Mama seemed to get all the attention and it was her voice that most people identify The Mamas and Papas with - but for me it was Denny, without a doubt

  • @Feinmess me too

  • a Swedish artist named Jens Lekman used a clip of this song in his song "Maple Leaves." Not a bad song.

  • Let's all get drunk on wine and go back to the "summer of 67"...Dan O'Niallain

  • love them

  • Sundazed Records just released the Mono Version of the If You Can Believe Your Eyes And Ears lp complete with toilet cover! I had the stereo version (with word scroll) but this new original Mono mix blows it away!!

  • Thanks for posting this!!!! I am just reminiscing about my youth. The Mamas and the Papas will always be part of my life's soundtrack. I love this version, so sweet and romantic. I am preparing to get married again soon... yes at my age there is still romance!!! I think we will use this song. They were all amazing talents on their own, but together they were incomparable! John may have had a lot of dark demons, but the man was a BRILLIANT arranger/writer. Thanks again for the song!

  • gets me all maudlin

  • Good music......what the fuck happened to good music? 21 years old and I missed the golden age of music , shit sucks......but doesnt suck as bad music coming out lately. When you listen to this kinda shit on youtube ask yourself "how much is this worth?" this music is priceless, remeber that as you listen to it for free

  • such an amazing song, most people had sick voices back in the day

  • bitch

  • Denny - wow = !!!! You can just hear Denny and Cass throughout ... two absolute talents ...

  • @redtailspirit Wow, that's not creepy.

  • @1985MANAmericana... I didn't mean to be creepy, let me try again...

in 1966, somewhere in the SWUSA, I heard this song for the first time, it affected me physically as nothing in the current playlist does... (not saying there isn't some good stuff!) the voices and the sincerity behind them moved me, I take this personally, so I addressed Michelle personally, as in a fan letter, (do you know that at one time people actually put words on paper and sent these bits of paper to each other?) cont'd

  • @1985MANAmericana

If you know Michelle personally and are protecting her, then kudos! If you do not , then who are you to object to my harmless admiration of one of the icons from my youth? Of the four, she is the only one left, and I realize that the person is not the icon! Still, she represents the group to the world by marketing their product... a venture that I support. So, Michelle, please continue passing around the good feelings! We need them now more than ever!!!

  • Just discovered their music... reckon John Philips is a maestro.

  • whats happening at 0:52? looks like an argument...

  • michelle is so lovely

  • like...

  • I got married Feb 23, 2010 and this was my wedding song. When i met my husband this song was playing in the restaurant where we met on our first date. Yep we met on a dating site. :-))

  • @AlexandriaKazarian, that's a lovely story. Did you use this version or the other one that the M&P made a year or so later? Either way, what a beautiful and ORIGINAL song to dance to .Congratulations and good luck.

  • @AlexandriaKazarian I wish for you both a long life and the simple prosperity of happiness and health. Never let go of each other, no matter what life throws at you. Peace and Love.

  • Cass and Denny had the best vocals.Michelle was just eye candy, and John was more the brains.I lost my respect for him after hearing what he did to his daughter Mackenzie.I know they were both messed up from drugs but having sex with your daughter is sick.

  • @Desiree50 Can we please at least understand the distinction between a great musician and a loathsome human being?

  • @ivelosthewilltolive I hear you man

  • Comment removed

  • @SeattleLA I read Mackenzies book, got it from library.and all she talked about was herself and the years she did drugs, her marriages and her love affairs.there was only one small part about her father.I am sure she went on TV to plug that book and make it sound like she and her father would be on every page If u have time go to library and read it and let me know what u think.peace Desiree

  • my god that Denny had some voice.RIP Denny,Cass and John

  • Are John and Michelle arguing in the doorway?

  • I had forgotten how good they were. Whoever put this video up, thank you so much

  • This group is like a time machine for me. Im an old fart but with this group on my MP3 player its the 60s again. You just choke up and my kids laugh at me.... but what do they know anyway.

  • GREAT GROUP ,GREAT SONG . DO YOU WANT TO DANCE?

  • One does not hear these kind of harmonies and orchestrations any more. Yes, there is not much talent these days!

  • Saudades imensas.

  • at 1:22 i see Denny Doherty from TMATP and to he's left edie sedgwick... idk anyone else see that?

  • Great song, great group

  • at 1:22 i see Denny Doherty from TMATP and to he's left edie sedgwick... idk anyone else see that?

  • This was also a hit for Cliff Richard and the Shadows i n the Uk i 63....but i prefer this version ....just

    #Jim

  • God, I got goose bumbs all over! Cass and the Mama's&Papa's are of the likes that you will never ever see again! Today's music belongs in the toilet in comparison!

  • "Today's music belongs in the toilet in comparison!"

    Well and sarcastic said!

  • @sodimite Absolutely beautiful rendition of the song. I especially love the guitar intro. Amazing -and tragic- that only one of the four is still with us, but their music will live on for ever.

  • Viajei no passado, fui a 1965, quantas recordações esta musica me trás .... grande interpretação deste meteórico conjunto que grande sucesso fez na época ...

  • Denny D. had one of the very best voices of the Mama and Papa's era. Very Smooth.

  • Didn't the Beach Boys sing this also?

  • This version covers the original by Bobby Freeman...

This version, for me, exemplefies how a song can be re-arranged to make it better...

as was done with "Crazy" by Patsy Cline, who changed the original version penned by Willie Nelso...but I digress

  • beautiful :)

  • HAPPY VALENTINES DAY! this will be one of my wedding song!

  • Very nice version of this song; thank you.

  • Nem sabem com o que vibravam !!!! Pai abusou da filha durante anos ,aqui eram amantes ,a filha contou tudo na OPRAH,

  • At 1.22 I seem to see Jane Asher, then-friend of Paul Mc Cartney. TMATP were very close with The Beatles.

  • Yes, that's true :)

  • Dear Viewer: The Mamas and Papas, Byrds and 60's groups knew how to harmonize better than today's talentless groups. Agreed? Dan O'Niallain, Grafton, Mass.

  • @oniallain1965 mostly agree, airplane, beatles, byrds, csny, lovin'spoonful, mamas and papas, youngbloods, very harmonious and the songs carried a message... Bob Dylan said something like "message songs are for the editors of college newspapers" implying the naive. (there is someone out there who will prove me wrong by getting the quote right!) However, IMHO, today's performers have learned and moved on, for instance, in my mind, Tina Turner enabled Rhianna!

  • @oniallain1965 Speaking of harmony: I played this song and the Beach Boys' "Little Pad" in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame's interactive booths with harmonizing in mind. This happened just last week, and the reason for thinking of harmonizing was that I was then to head west to Toledo, Ohio, for this year's Four Freshmen convention.

  • My boyfriend and I danced to this song one night in my parents' livingroom, starting the record over and over about 50 Xs. That was 41 years ago. We just celebrated 40 yrs of marriage. This song was one that got it all started. Thanks for the beautiful memory.

  • congrats!

  • @turtles57

    nice comment...joe in ireland.

  • First heard this by Cliff Richard in the early 60s..quite a good rockin version

    Jim

  • It's cool that you have that old video clip of John and Michelle. I think that it's shot in the doorway of their house. I remember seeing pictures of them with Chynna, when she was maybe 2 yrs old, sitting in front of their house with that rounded door. I was just a kid...so it was probably 16 Magazine! Great song!!

  • i dont think it was a loving talk!

  • I thought of that too, but I don't. I downloaded the song and it played the same on my IPod, etc., as it plays on my com. Very odd!

  • Then you I must have a different v. than you do because the ladies' vocals are right at the beginning. This v. is all wrong and you can tell that there are vocals cut out (and even fainting hear them).

  • Why are Michelle and Cass' vocals cut out of this version?

  • Cut? Thay are here :)

  • sure, they are on the left! :))

  • @TRAVISJAMES03 she is singing just not lead vocal(s).

  • I have never, ever heard this before, only Bette Middler's and I thought her's was the best, but this is probably even better. This version is beautiful while Bette's is more sensual and romantic. Thanks for opening my eyes to this version. If ITUNES has this, I'm buying it. What a beautiful version this is.

  • please check out Johnny River's version of this same song, I love this, but JR's even more.

  • Incredible harmony. Beautiful voices in their prime!!
