I concur on everything KCrutchf said. I'm only 35 and that damn piano riff has been in my head for two weeks now. I would love to see Return to Forever make a new album with new compositions just to get an ideal of where they are thinking in 2012. This may have been their best song!
To me, this is the best album ever recorded.. I love each artist part, this blows me away no matter how many times I hear it. I was also very fortunate to hear it played on quality equipment. Nothing compares.
Chick will be remebered LONG after we are all dead and gone. He was born to be a pianist and thankfully for us, he didn't waste his gift. Oh yeah, He is 1/2 Sicilian....GO ITALY!
i think of Spain as CC tribute to the country and people, but Romantic Warrior as the universal time piece which can fit all genres and cultures. peace always to RTF
hey guys, this is not chick music, that's not a judgement, just a statement of fact. and please don't be a bozo, and tell me your sister was into fusion,no shit,of course there are exceptions, but by and large, chicks are just not into this stuff.
@flowerchild58 i was talking about "chicks", as in women/girls/muchachas/dames,get it. i know his name is chick, that's not what i was reffering to. my point, was, that women[by and large], are not huge fusion music freaks. you completely missed, what i was saying.
Well, yea, but that's what makes it amazing. I mean if you find a girl who actually likes jazz/fusion, she'll probably be very sophisticated, which is relatively rare. Same goes for boys, too. This is mature and sophisticated music and so are most of the fans. You want naive, inane and shallow girls, popular/mainstream fanatics are everywhere these days.
@heero7yui mind you,i'm not preaching,i'm just more or less documenting a reality. i don't think it's so much about sophistication, though. straight ahead mainstream jazz,is sophisticated, and a lot more women are into it,than fusion. let's also not forget, that fusion encompasses a pretty broad[no pun intended],range of musical expression, from "light" jazz; to, tour de force, mahavishnu orchestra, sonic wall blasting.
Was so honored to see them do this live in 76. I almost wet my pants. 4 masters at work. Must have listened to this 500 times or more. Still get chills. This listen it was Lenny White OH MY GOD Lenny please.
Is there any other piano player out there except for myself (who learned the entire song by ear and transcribed his solo (but I still play my own)) who took the time to learn and perform this masterpiece? In my opinion, it is Chick's greatest piece. From the surreal intro, to the effectively simple melody and blistering rhythmic improvisations, and ending with the most magnificent coda ever created for a jazz piece, it should be required for graduate performances in universities. I rest my case.
@treblemakerful finally a real musician im just a kid and im a bass player and i pick this stuff out by ear on bass vids people are like where did you get the tabs and i reply listen to it by ear to figure it out your ear will never lie and you will get the most accurate results on tabs its hard to read because you dont know if its a quarter note, half note or whatever and you dont know where the rests are also when you do it by ear you can get the right dynamics on certain notes
@treblemakerful I like that, cute. Isn't this one the most awesome pieces ever? I bought this album when I was just 16, I'm now 52, and I love it just as much today as I loved it then. It is a master piece how Stanley with that base just draw you in with that haunting sound. Every artist just did the damn thing. How can wordless music says just want I needed to hear!! WOW
back in the day rtf was so avante garde the were unheard of. only the cool kids were that hip. not to say that you were not.but it wass like not knowing who led zepplin was
Every piece on this album (I had two vinyls bought during original release periods) is a masterpiece in it's own right. Performance mastery by some of the real musical magicians of our time.
Wow.......................just speechless. Always loved Stanley Clarke. Return to Forever is what every musician need to listen to to open their mind and strengthen their skills.
I was 13 years old when I first heard RTF, After hearing these guys, I never went back to the kiddy stuff (J5, Osmonds etc) again. This IS REAL, that stuff is like comparing rock salt to diamonds!
@Patlynn167 I know me too. Ever notice how just about everybody get into fusion like between 12-13 years old and all their friends are listening nonsense...LOL!
I had this record in the 80's Stanley Clarke, AL Dimeola, Jaco Pastorius, Chic Corea and Lenny White were the musicians on it. Jazz dudes whom I didnt know shit about because I was a headbanger in those days...
@sumrexdiscus4u i listen to rap and that doesn't have anything to do with knowing good music when u hear it. my dad used to play this and the jester one, that was in the like 84-85 ish and im 30 now and i didn't forget to get this album when i had a chance oh yeah if it matters im black and from the hood but i still can't get with the country too much tho!
I think this is as much classical/jazz fusion as jazz/rock fusion. It really doesn't have much to do with rock really except for a few repetitions which occur in many types of popular music including vocal jazz.
My favorite album for over 30 years. Not sure why they catagorize this as "fusion" as it's all acoustic. The best jazz ever recorded. STILL waiting on thier next album.
@bill75229 the 'fusion' of the best of jazz and rock? Just enough structure to keep some 'rock' hooks and such, whilst being open enough to let the musicianship speak for itself? Unless you were being rhetorical..

No distortion allowed to cover up any technical shortcomings ;)
