wow I almost clicked out of this after watching the first 30 seconds because it looked silly, but after watching it for longer i realised that this is one of the best toprock tutorials i've seen
Actually, thanks for this vid. I've been doing the running man (do they call it "candy walking" now? I've always heard it called "the march") for years and now I want to learn top rocking. I used to go to raves back in the day and a friend of mine used to combine crazy top rocking with candy walking. As such, no one held a candle to him on the dance floor because he'd come out with all this sick footwork.
hey! NICE VIDEO! Great help! I still dont know how to do the toprock you said you dont know the name. can you post a tutorial video on the toprock. Thanks
ok ok ok ok dude this is the best top rock tutorial ever and it's the most in depth too very clean and easy to learn ^^ thx bro i really appreciate this ^^
Where did u learn to dance like that cause where i live there is nobody who cares about bboying and one more.Whats the difference between bboying and hip-hop?Thnx for helpin me!!
@Sallon08 I just danced anyway, but b-boying is the style of dance that bests suits me, i learnt from being taught and watching videos, mostly self taught.
I've been to a few breakin workshops - B-boy Born, B-boy Y-not, B-boy Blanka roc and Poe One and I've picked up some stuff from them too (not in this vid though)
B-boying is the dance of Hip-Hop culture which has 4 elements - Graffiti, MCing, DJing, B-boying
Hey, bro. Kudos to anyone who takes the time to put up a tutorial for others to benefit from, f'sho. But I want to correct you on something. I don't agree with this so-called "four elements of hip-hop", but if I did, b-boying would NOT be one of them. Instead, it would be "breaking". What's the difference? By specifying it as "b-boying", you're excluding all the awesome bgirls out there, and there are some great ones for sure! Don't exclude them - call it "breaking" to include all!
@GangreneVagina Although B-boying does sound gender specific, it is the name of the dance form, most B-girls I know have no issue with it. The dance has always been about the style and skill, not race or gender.
Breaking does not carry the cultural weight of the dance for those that live that lifestyle. Personally i would not say that i am a b-boy, I really enjoy doing it but it's not like I practice everyday, I enjoy dancing when that beat hits me.
nice video, but not being rude, your video editor might have something that takes out the sound of your feet shuffling on the ground, but otherwise, great video
Yours toprock guide is the greatest lesson of b- boying I've ever had. Thanks to you I can really improve my toprock and I can associate it with my footwork. What a shame that my instructor hasn't got such a power and passion like you. Do you have any advices how a backspin do? Best regards Monica
i did Rep a few Crews a long time ago, now i make B-Boy Music, for Battles and Events, i live in london, where do you live, not for no one to be interested, if you like to hear some of my Music, Email me csentinel@hotmail.co.uk or check out my new video on my home page spacepoze. its called UK B-Boy championship 2010.
I recently started practicing Toprock and Uprock, always had a feel for being on beat (I'm a drummer, so thats a plus I guess), but I never really got down to learning different steps, I've just been freestyling up until now. So I have to say thanks for putting these up, they're really helpful!
@Arkyization You should do whatever feels comfortable for you, when you can do it to a beat then try doing another to a beat mix them together and going in different directions.
Keep tempo with your upper body, that way you never lose the beat.
Most importantly just dance when you feel more natural in your moves and you don't have to go the same speed and hit every single beat, just play with it, take breathers/pauses.
@Arkyization you should stretch a lot after doing your workout, I come from a martial arts background so the training from that directly helps my breakin.
I've gone to the gym and from my experience you should only go to the gym to lose weight or build muscle, however if you wanna be good at martial arts or breakin you should just do martial arts and breakin, it's body conditioning ie wrists getting stronger/used to breakin positions, co-ordination etc
Great tutorial! Although while a lot of your other footwork is solid, your running man needs a bit of work. This is however, a year and half old so I'm sure by now that's irrelevant. :)
Air walk is not a moonwalk without moving backwards... ure foot isnt even sliding along the floor when doing the air walk, they are completely different.
on the second top rock you do i suggest that when you step out bend back and when you going in to the middle lean forward . so if your foots going to the right than lean back to the left
Check V2 for a rough uprock tutorial, better to learn uprocking from rockers though, there are a few different styles/ways to do it, but I show the one i was taught originally.
Yeah, dvd's give you like two toprock variations, Cuz Im still learning I think where Im at in this video is more like where any of us would be at, had we known some more variations.
Grooving is an important element to dance in general, keeping a tempo to the beat with your body in some way, I don't really explain it here, but you'll notice it when i cut loose.

If you want to call it breaking to include women, I haven't been aware of them being excluded.
I have heard of b-girl only events, but not of B-boy only events, jams are for everyone, true hip hop does not exclude those that want to embrace it.
That's how I feel about it.

just got a question, I never usually see the "running man" in people's toprock. isn't that a Shuffle dance? o_O
Shadowfury 2 years ago 2
It is a shuffle dance I guess, I've always thought of it as a 90's move from MC Hammer myself.
Im just saying that the running man is similar to rockin, rock step in motion. No reason you can't do a bit of the actual running man in toprock.
