Shukran for uploading this entire serious. I found it very helpful. May Allah reward you. I'm always confused as to why non muslims search for Islamic videos on youtube only to watch and make negative comments about islam. May Allah guide them.
Philips uses the 'cultural relativism' argument ie that marrying pre-pubertal children was normal in Mohammed's day and so wasn't regarded as paedophilia, so by implication it would be regarded as that today. Sounds very plausible until you remember that Philips himself advocates old men like him marrying girl children (see 'Undercover Mosques' Channel 4 'Despatches', Jan 2006). So what does this make Philips.
I think this man should forget religion and preach about what he knows (ie nothing).
To summarize... take this from me, a very openminded person with a genuine desire to learn about and embrace Islam... if you, when faced with questions from non-Muslims, answer their questions using the justifications made by the gentleman in the video, your credibility will too be lost. Because his justification is so peppered with inaccuracy, any intelligent person, if given his answers to their questions would be unimpressed and you would be no closer to showing them the Islam that you love.
Do not read them from the viewpoint of Muslims. People always have a natural bias. It is for this reason that when I seek to learn about Islam, I do not read about Islam from non-Islam sources. If I did, I know that I wouldn't be getting the whole truth.
Just as you (I assume) feel frustrated when people people take Islam and some of it's controversial practices at face value because really there is a long, sometimes complicated reasoning and logic behind the behavior, the same is true for Christians and North Americans in general. Please don't judge us when you haven't lived it and haven't really taken the time to understand. Read up on Christian/North American practices from Christians and North Americans.
I think that it is easy for some Muslims to say "look at the demise of the family in north america" and use that as an excuse to justify their own situations. I just want everyone to know that it simply is not true.
Because she never forced me to stay at home and also never forced me to leave, we have a wonderful loving relationship in which we talk at least once a day. She knows all the details of my life and still offers her wisdom and occasionally disciplines me if she feels that I am getting way off course. She is still my mother and always will be and I will always love and respect both her and my father.
They encouraged me to go to university and let my wings soar so that I can experience more life than I would have, had I stayed in their town. This was hugely painful for both parents, in particular my mother. There was nothing she wanted more than to keep me at home with her so she could shelter me see me all the time BUT she knew that a lot of that was for her own self and that it would be selfish to keep me at home just for reason.
3. The comments about family in North America are grossly incorrect and a very annoying stereotype. Contrary to what many Muslims may think, family is very important in North America. Here people have a different way of acting out that importance but it isn't at all we were portrayed. I love and care for my family immensely. I consider the counsel of my mother to be far superior to anyone else, even friends. My parents did not kick me out when I was 18 severing the ties.
2.The woman who was charged with death for adultery who you mentioned Oprah was supporting. I know nothing of the case but assuming that yes, the woman plead guilty to adultery and was pregnant and gave birth which was deemed evidence enough to support her guilt- okay that is fine fair, she definitely committed the crime. Now, why was a paternity test not completed on her child and the alleged father? That would solve all questions. Paternity tests are by no means a new scientific technology.
It is for this reason that a jury is carefully chosen for trial in North America. Only after a jury has determined that the person is guilty, does the punishment (ie sentence) get determined and this is by a judge. Is this system perfect? No, by no means is it perfect BUT I think it is better than what you sir, have proposed in your clip.
1. The jury system in NA doesn't determine what the punishment is for a crime, its only purpose is to determine (by unbiased people) if someone is guilty or innocent based on a evidence from both sides of the issue. Allowing a family who is obviously emotionally wounded over the death of their loved one determine the fate of someone who may or may not have committed the crime seems irresponsible. Men and women both (not just women) make poorer decisions when under extreme stress and angst.
Unfortunately, the gentleman in the video presents so many falsehoods about North America that he lost all credibility with me which negated any truth that he may have presented. I have never in my life commented on a youtube video but after listening to this gentleman perpetuate myths about North America, I felt compelled to create an account and correct some of his major errors.
I am a Christian who is in a serious relationship with a Muslim. We are both Canadian. I decided to watch this clip in an effort to qualm my fears about some of the highly publicized negative connotations about Islam. I know that if my bf and I were to marry, our children would have to be raised as Muslims so now I am spending my time finding out exactly what it means to be a Muslim. I was hoping that by watching this clip, I would be able to rest some of my fears.
im curious as to what you are scared off excactly. if you feal that this man isn't credible, i can give you links to other speekers who use more from their religous texts and scriptutures to answer some of the same issues brought up in this vid. their are much more focused presentations of islam availible. pulling from sorces other then one's own opinion doesnt seem to be very big with Philips. i dont think youll find what your looking for here,(i know i didnt) you might like hamza yusuf better.
I see and accept many of his points, but much of what he says about the western culture is factually wrong. Like parents in western cultures does care about their daughters/sisters etc. People aren't just out on their own. And if some lack family to provide security there are systems that are designed to be able to help.
I don't like Bilal Philips' approach to the difficult questions at all. He is using secular and governmental examples and laws to rationalize the actions of Islam (execution, etc.. 1 man's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter (U.S.' Revolutionary War). These were appaling examples.
Do the Ahmiddiyans believe the same concerning execution of Muslims who leave their faith. I don't like how Bilial Philips JUSTIFIES such actions which is erroneous!!!

That you can't see the difference between two teenagers having sex and an old pervert taking advantage of a kid, honestly explains alot about this religion.
@dln3472 akhi Aisha RA was not a child when the prophet married her she was an adolescent. Open a medical dictionary up and a child that has undergone puberty is then an adolescent another name for teenager. Americans make problems about this but in 1812 is when the law was passed that a bride must be atleast 14 before that it was younger.
Of all the things I've learned about the life of Allah's Messenger (SWT) this is the first time I've had some issues or concerns. But I guess I don't have to agree...do I?
