Don't ever let the negative people shake you, You made this song more special to me. I have returned to watch this vid over the years and just love the way you did it! I would have to say the only person I have ever seen play it better was the man himself, Mississippi John Hurt. Rock on!!!
Yatah, I don't have a vid of me playing, I think you took what I said too seriously. I think her rendition is very good, and maybe mine isn't as good as hers. It doesn't really matter, but she doesn't do any slurs, slides or hammer-ons. I really dig her though, and that she has chosen this music is frigen great, she be real gude. I didn't mean to raise your back, Yatah. I have a version of me doing it on 12 string my own way. But I learned MJH's version 40 years ago. I be ancient, Bob
You play and sing really well! Thanks for showing me that it's not just us old guys that are into Mississippi John Hurts music, and you do it justice. You can check my meagre efforts but I look like a gimp cos if I think about how I look my fingers stop working!
Wow; I think this lady's style and playing is gritty and great, just as John Hurt' was. The expression on her face is soulful to the max and her picking is right on! Why, she plays it almost as good as myself, by gosh. Keep pickin and don't grin if you don't want to.
That facial expression is due to the concentration I guess. Playin' and singin' a blues song at the same time is a hard job. It takes way more time to do both naturally than any other music genre. Anyway, great job. I hope you're still keepin' up with what you've been doin'. Take care.
@onesadsong I think it's because she is being controlled from a different world. A blues channeling interdimentional Exene Cervenka-June Carter. Maybe she's high on something. That's stupid actually, she is who she is. Her voice floats very naturally above the playing. They're both intense. 'Kay's Husband' is wicked. I wish the lyrics were available.
This is a lovely version. I've been trying to play this song for years and am only just now getting close to where I want it to be. I especially like the way the difficult high instrumental "bridge" is handled here, again quite close to my own attempts. This beats all the versions I've seen so far on You tube - with the obvious exception of John Hurt, of course!
So many b.s. comments. This is the hardest MJH song to play. She kicks its ass. Buy the woman some recording equitment if you want a better sound. She looks beautifully dead serious. I love this video.
i think for the softer style of singing a good mic would help..you have put a lot of work into learnig the songs and i just think your voice isnt coming through on the recording..rustic is good..i like lo fi ..but id much rather hear this than someone hiding behind a filter ..if tha is too much to ask have you thought of doing the video in a better space.im a visual artist and play some folk..i think the videos need work.
Your playing is inspirational -- closest rendition to the original MJH I have heard. Can't wait to share your blues videos with my 11 year old grandson and show him what is possible with diligent practice and love of the genre.

Technique's great, picking and vocal. All you need is some heart and soul. This song is about a guy who's girl is cheating on him with drugs and a dealer. You make it sound like she's sucking lollipops. Add guts, girl-- I'm sure you've got 'em!
Hi, i am not sure you are corect on the meaning of this song,
i understand the term "Candyman" can be ambiguous meaning either a drug dealer or as i believe in this song the term refers to a lascivious man good with the ladies,
"a stick of candy 9 inch long"
and "His stick candy don't melt away
It just gets better, so the ladies say"
this sounds like a more sexual conotation than narcotic, i like the idea of it being both but i dont see a song about a hurt man whos girl is cheating on him
Yeah, sexual for sure, which is why I said "AND" a dealer. But you're right, I should have been clearer. I stick with my critique, though-- the cover version is soul-less. Sounds a little like "Froggie Went A-courting", but even that would need more soul. I think the performer has great potential, and now that she's nailed the technical part, I'd love to hear her really sing.
