This is so good and such a classic that I have to go incoherent to describe it. Burton, of course, provided magnificent and mood-precise narration, and the music provided by Wayne, while deeply rooted in the 1970'es, transcended its time and still sounds as magnificent today as I would expect it to sound to Wells Himself in the late 1800's. All the while, it puts its finger on the NERVE, that is, the basic philosohpies of Western society today. Awesome!
@JapieKrekelful That's been happening since people started recording history... I'd think H.G. Wells predicting tank-, air-, and nuclear-warfare would be something to get more excited about. Also, as a sidenote, H.G. Wells was a fucking boss. I walk past his house whenever I go drinking and a portait of him hangs in the seating area of the bar. I'm sure he'd laugh when he realised how much we live in the tacky world of The History of Mr. Polly.
i remember my brother tony getting the album in the 70,s and me sneaking it in my room for a listen, iwas 8 and hooked on it, what a story, even now at 43 listening to this is making me wanting to go out on my "raliegh grifter" lol.
This albbum of music was made what over 30 years ago and still so many people watch it and love it because it is that good. It's great music coupled with a great originial story - perfect!!
MAYBE with enough response from the public and maybe some media we could again see JEFF WAYNE'S VERSION OF WAR OF THE WORLDS on stage again in its proper form as it was back then....we can all wish i suppose.
The thing about this album is NOT just its great musical adaption from jeff wayne's true vision, BUT the characters played by people with very distinctive voices and real talents that make this album truely timeless...This part is also my fave and i also have the original double album with booklet too...This album is the 1 thing i would never sell no matter what and i will pass it down and made sure it stays in the family..............
Beth: No Nathaniel........Oh no Nathaniel no...........there has to be a way that you can learn to act.....
Nathaniel: No there's nothing.........whiskey in the jar-o.....
Burton: I became acutely aware that the Martians cry of 'Ulla' was positively Oscar winning in comparison to Nathaniel, but didn't really care as I was getting my groove on to this kickass track.
What I love about this story, the book and obviously this musical version, is that it does cover all aspects of an apocolyptic occurance. Modern apocolyptic films always forget little things like this, and assume all humans would all just run or fight and thats it. Heaven knows I'd turn to my faith in an hour like this. Things like that are what make War Of The Worlds the best sci-fi book ever written.
@wandererlain H.G. Wells had the Martians invade England because back then it was the greatest world power and he wasn't an arrogant man. In the Hollywood adaptation, all nations of Earth were assailed simultaneously but communication was cut off so there's little mention beyond rumors of what's happening elsewhere in the world. I myself would have preferred a well done adaptation closer to the book, but more people are able to relate to screaming little girls and Tom Cruise unfortunately.
So cool that a 1978 concept album can get so many comments today. How many albums from that time are even interesting? This one remains great though. I remember when it was released and how I played it so often that my friends threatened to drown me if I played it one more time!
@Alistairville same!yet secretly they must of liked it as they all came to see the recent stage production with me! love julie coventry's voice, as of yet there is still no equal to its beauty.(download dont cry 4 me argentina)
There will never be a true version of the book because the major money players are in the States and for some reason the American producers believe that Americans won't watch anything film without an American in it. A bit short sighted and certainly not true today - look at Harry Potter.
If you enjoyed this you should also check out the box set for this album. There are early versions, demos and out takes of this track and they are all great. Clare Torry and Bob Saker did a brilliant job on the demos.
The narration, orchestra, and images it puts in your mind is far better than any film adaptation. Like H. P. Lovecraft. Someone should do a musical on HPL.
why dont they actully make a film where its based actually london instead of basing it in america trying to make it better, when all it does is make the whole thing alode of bollox .
@m0torhead000 I would love it if someone did. To actually see Horsell Commons, Westminster Bridge and other locations mentioned in the novel would definitely put authenticity back into the story.

@Whirrednerd And the silly American adaptations don't take in account that they invaded London, and blitzed the fuck out of it like the Nazis did.

defamatory to do this to a great piece of literature. Cant they just tell the bloody story as close to the book as reasonably possible!
