I have loved this song, which was one of the many highlights of the legendary Chicago compilation "Souled Out" (Chess Records). Of note to the many label variations this recording was released on by Chess is the late and possibly last company reissue on Cadet Records; for the single to be reissued at that time (mid to late 60's on the horse, reid-white-blue logo) meant that there was still a demand for The Students years after the original release of "I'm So Young."
Wow... this is great! Embarrassingly, I first heard this by the Beach Boys... a hundred years ago... they did a good job on it too... this is great, great...
It's great finding such a copy but I have to confess that I much prefer Rosie & The Originals singing their version from 1963, or there abouts. I love all Rosie's songs and in particular, Angel Baby (1960)
It's great finding such a copy but I have to confess that I much prefer Rosie & The Originals singing their version from 1963, or there abouts. I love all Rosie's songs.
I've always loved this one ... The Ronettes were mentioned -- their version is nice, but they altered the melody or the chords a bit and it's not as "pure" as the original. The Beach Boys also did a fine cover, but it can't beat the Students.
@PJDooWop Yes he did pass. His daughter is still alive. She went to a oldie convention so to speak just to watch . She was asked to go on stage and say hi to everyone. When she told the people who she was (Leroys daughter) they they gave her a standing ovation which brought her to tears. Pretty cool. She just went there to listen.
@PJDooWop I also like the Ronettes version, but my favorite is the Students. I saw the Ronettes in person when they came to our high school around 1962, I also have the students version on 45.
Richie (the original bass) is still singing this song, also My Vow To You, and Everyday of the Week. The group Richie and the Students will be in New york the weekend of April 23rd to perform. My wife sings with Richie. They were at the Count Basey Theatre in new Jersey in Feb. The songs are stil great.
We got the chance to meet Prez when we did a familt reunion show a couple of years ago. He's a good guy too. As far as I know, your right, he was in NY
After seeing the Frankie Lymon movie again recently, just had to check out the kiddie DooWop. This is great! And was this the reference for the Beach Boys attempt at the tune?
i know...the cry baby soundtrack does not have that song in the cd...its funny because when i type in "The Students" on itunes this german group comes up...do you know anywhere where i can find the song??
Kiddie doo wop at it's very best. Great lead and great harmony. I listen to this great sound and I remember what I was doing at this time of my life. Epitome of great NYC, slow, doo wop. Pure gold
Great Song!! This is one of my favorite Doo-Wop Songs of all time. This song sends chills down my spine. "I have a girlfriend. She says I'm her only one....." Pure Gold!
Great post, it's not often you print something this well known but I love it! One of my fave's and the other side i like better (day of the week..)!! interesting pressing and story, i know nothing of this, very peculiar.
Not sure.. As far as I have understood there were a few years in between the time this was pressed on Note and Checker. The wax is noticably different on this copy than the others I've seen. I will post Every Day Of The Week and I will try and snap a photo of the dead wax
No, I've never seen this version before but I've seen a LOT of label variations on Checker. That type is so small it makes it look really strange. Definitely a keeper.

One of the singers in this group was a child molester. His name was Dwight York. Good song though. lol
