...carbon is released when u burn the extra fuel with out enough O2, so instead of getting HC (fuel)+ O2 = H2O +CO2

u get HC+O2=H2O+CO+C. to put it basically, apart from banks and modern eco tuning u will see smoke on race diesels as generally u dont use every last amount of air, to do this u overfuel- deepre injection penetration with the expense of bad/worse MPG.

try fiddling with a non turbo diesel pump, u will notice highest bhp if u set it to smoke like a bitch!

black smoke means its fuelling enough to get the most out of a diesel for a given boost/ charge; when u can only boost to a certain level without going beyond turbo efficiency envelope or heating air so much that u actually get less air in the engine due to heat reducing density.

It is true that a smoking engine will give more bhp if u add more air, but there r limits to how much air u can get in. Take even a n/a engine, it will get most bhp when smoking/ overfuelling, smoke is just carbon...
