Geiler Flug!
You did a good job in filming this video. You did the whole nine yards, boarding, finding a seat, and even the pushback process! I noticed some of the passengers were already asleep when you were going to your seat. Finally, I loved the takeoff scene. I guess all of the DC-9's have that "buzz" sound when taking off. Great job once again!
@snoopyloopy the fuselage design of the MD-80 and the DC-9 is similar, the DC-9-50 has an equally long fuselage as the MD-87, but not as long as the Md-82-88. the other Dc-9 series are even shorter than the Md-87.
further differences are the engines: the md-80 is a newer airplane with more modern engines which are also quieter and more fuel efficient. there are also differences when you look into the cockpit. Some newer Md-80s have a "Screwdriver Tailcone", Dc-9s don't.
Hey Felix, I really enjoyed watching this, especially because it's a DC-9 takeoff. After reading your description of why this flight was so important to you, it occurred to me for the first time that I've never flown on a DC-9 when I've been in Europe. The DC-9 is important to me, because as a child I flew on it countless times from Philadelphia to Chicago Midway and back to visit my grandparents, great memories! But thanks to a friend I've also been atop the tower in Frankfurt! :-)
Hey Felix, really enjoyed your video. Last December I had my first chance to go on a DC-9, it was a -50 and it was an amazing flight. Then this past March I had the pleasure of riding on the same aircraft as you, 9751. FYI this aircraft was built in 1968 not 1969! All the better. On Labor Day I had the chance to ride on the final scheduled -30 flights to EWR & back to DTW, although they kept a -30 until recently. Still Im so glad to have been able to try them all out.
This is a great video. Those JT-8Ds are just music, aren't they?
I'm going to try for the -40 series when I'm in the US in October, as they are the only ones I have not flown yet (apart from the -20 which is near impossible now).
Look at 01:20; notice the engine inlet guide vanes. These are stationary. As Captain when I was saying goodbye to the passengers while deplaning I had an upset passenger from the back express his disproval that I didn't inform the passengers that the engine had been shut down in flight. OMG!
Hey Felix, hope you're doing well. Wanted to let you know I had the pleasure of flying on ship 9751 back in March of this year, DTW-LGA. Had a truly wonderful experience aboard her. I have some cockpit photos, and if you're interested feel free to email me.
@meteors6 That's right. The 30s and 40s are supposed to be retired, while the 50s get leather seats and wifi and will be retired with the MD-88s by the end of 2013. However, with the CO/UA merger, we'll see if this actually happens or not.
the DC9 is a very good airplane, im happy that Delta is going to keep the - 50's but they said they don't want the -30's or 40's so these good airplanes will be in the desert
Excellent video, I really enjoyed watching it. Also, thank you for putting up some decent music! It's very refreshing to hear amidst all the aviation videos ruined by annoying rock or techno songs.
As long as it is maintained well there is not one difference in the safety compared to newer planes. Otherwise it would not be allowed to fly passengers.
@frankfurtmaintal make sure the next time you fly to check out the year and flying hours that plane has on it.... Might as well go ahead and kick the tires on it too while you're looking it over..... lmao....
my first time in a dc9 was on 1998 since that day to this day i have fluw 12 times in dc9 ,, i really love it ,, if you want to fly on dc9 you can come to venezuela ,, here there are a lott
nah theres really not a big difference i mean the only thing that is a little bit different is the tail and bigger engines but everything else is the same
WAY cool. CANNOT beat those behind the wing shots of this stuff. My FAVORITE place to be. I've always liked sitting there. Engine power is cool, too. Nice film.
The way you can find out when a particular airplane was built is to look for the FAA tail # (N670NC for example) located on the fuselage towards the rear of the plane. By going to the FAA website, you can look up info on any aircraft registered in the USA using the tail # lookup feature on their website. That is how felixmies found out the date of manufacture for the aircraft in this video. Keep in mind the tail # I used in this comment is not the actual tail #. I used it only as an example.
Your just like me...whenever I fly on a DC-9 or MD-80-88...I always request a seat in back so I can be close to the sweet music of those Pratt&Whitney Engines...I always get strange looks from ticket agents when I request a seat near the Engines. Although I dont have video, I have audio recording of DC-9 flights I took during the 1970s of flights on Southern,Ozark,Delta and Eastern...ohhh do I love that sound...thanks so much for posting this video.
dude, these planes are fuckin loud when they take off and when they land!!!! cuz i work for southwest airlines at bwi and our gates are right near the runway, and its just annoying!!! they are the loudest planes in bwi!!! our planes are nice and quiet when they take off and land!!!!
Hi Felix, klasse Video, the good old DC-9. Wie lange die schönen Donnerschweine wohl noch im Einsatz fliegen werden, bis der schäbige A320 die Oberhand gewinnt.
Acctually, there are only about 800 DC-9-30/40/50 Series aircraft left total in the world (or maybe just the U.S.)(And I could be wrong!) But that doesn't include the Dc-9-80 (MD-80) Series...
Used to fly on DC-9s at YX all the time. Miss these birds. Love the JT8D series engines. Great video. Thanks for uploading it, brought back some memories for me.

When Austrian Airlines had the DC9 and then the MD80, I used to sit on this seat between wing and machine. I enjoyed "this" flight, thank you!
Please tell me what great music you used for the beginning! Thank you!

I suppose you'd rather fly on a 20 year old Airbus thats developing cracks in the wingbox and is close to cycling out? Hey at least its newer.
