Thanks; you are correct. I used a " restore disk" to erase the "95 programs then I booted with my XP disk which took a long time; The O.S. finally loaded. It lasted about 2 weeks until I got messages about my Virtual Memory. I later was able to trade that P.C. for a more updated P.C. I then rebooted that one with my XP Disc; It is working very good. the hardware will most likely not work with XP or is will be outdated as in: the average "off the shelf" Windows 95 PC is running on 400MB of RAM whereas newer OSs need MUCH more (Vista needs about 10 times that to run smoothly)

Reformat will erase everything...unless you have tons of back ups and plus if your xp cd is an older ver,you have to update everything from sp1 to sp2 and then to sp3...and lets not forget about "Activate Windows" the key thingy? which prevent you from updating unless you activate? the fastest you install will at least take you 25min Even with Auto answer thingy(SID).So in the end after installing mother board softwares and updates it will be an hour or more bepending on your speed/line

Well, yes and no. It deletes only the partition information and rewrites them. That does not necessarily mean the data is deleted. It is just not accessible through normal interaction anymore. Not good if you sell your computer to a hacker and he/she steals your credit card info.

With some freely available software, the data can still be salvaged. So formatting a drive you want to sell or something does not mean the disk is empty.

Yes What you say is true. You need a program that writes random data to you drive to make the drive un readable by a hacker

While it is true that reformatting may not get everything, 8bitmix, the chance of it missing anything of high importance like credit card information is very low. To be honest, it's nearly impossible. Using a file shedder to rid your hard drive of anything you don't want to have any chance of resurfacing is the best way to go. After you run a file shedder to clear private files, then you can reformat.
