  • Can I include "to go" in the sentence? When I order in McDonalds, I always say "Can I have a Big Mac to go?"

  • Very helpful. I'm very new to your channel but I love what I've watched so far. ^^

  • LOL. Thank you for your wonderful candid video

  • what if i'm ordering from, and intend to consume in, my automobile? the car may be stationary as i drink.

  • i think "Tennai de" is more common in cafes than "kochira de"... most common i hear is "tennai de omeshi agari deshouka"

  • all i need to know to survive in japan ;P

  • lol, i love the katakana words :p

  • I'm sorry but I gotta tell ya that in both Japan and the states, the smallest size you can order at Starbucks is called "short." It's not so common to order because it's so small...good if you just wanna shot or two of straight espresso. Next size up is called "tall", which is the small size in all others shops.

Basically, Starbucks has it's own size system which is the same in Japan as well as America.

I love your videos, but I wanted to clear that up.

  • hi im mesha im the owner of coffeelovers411,com visit us on our site thxs, oprah coffee is sold on my site, so with the help of oprah now im on my way thxs O

  • starbucks in japan? damn there everywhere.

  • @arivas713 No, we don't have starbucks here in Latvia... unfortunately!

  • a lot of people say that watching anime does not help to learn japanese but in higurashi they keep saying "o-mich-icariii"-cannot spell for my life,im sorry. it basicially means i want to take it home i think.so i guess it did help.

  • 2:50 Shinji rare nai !!!!..hahahah u are one of a kind...to spot that nano-particle and have an intermezzo..hahah precious

  • U are sooo lovely n your effort 2 explain to every Gaijin that watches this (including me)...

haha yea..I know that the one of the first things I`m gonna do after waking up in some manga caffee, is to skip all those free drinks and whoosh to STA~BA to order TO~RU.

now all I need to input in my memory those "super polite" orders.

    Onnanoko arigato...

  • 勉強になりました!ありがとうございました!

    抹茶ラテー飲みたーい!!!

  • いつか茶しばく?

  • こんにちは、ひろこさん!ビデオをUPしてありがとうございます!

私は日本語の授業をとっています。。so I am sorry if my Japanese is not good lol. しつもんがあります!

One time when I was ordering food, instead of saying お持ち帰りですか, the waitress said something else like もってかえり.. something lol. Is there another way of asking "Is it to go?"

    どもありがとう!^^

  • How would you say that you want 4 shots of espresso in your frappuccino?

  • hUzyOdaD> Hmmm Esupuresso Yon Hai Onegaishimasu.

(no one does that in Japan! lol)

  • @hUzyOdaD Rofl!

  • My coffee addiction thanks you. <3

  • Aaah cute.

  • このビデオは非常に有益だった。

  • I loved the opening for this one :D

  • the intonation for "kokode" in real life is with the ptich going down at the "de", not up, otherwise its like you're asking a question.

  • pitch not ptich, sorry

  • This is really, really great! It's not just for coffee, this is useful for lots of things! Thank you so much~

  • I wish I had known this when I went into MacDonalds in Osaka. You are right. The question confused me. But when I heard cochira de I was pretty sure she was asking me for here or to go. I answered koko de and she never new I didn't understand her completely. Or did she?

  • arigato hiroko. great video...

  • Ah awesome video! I study Japanese everyday but haven't got around to learning this yet! I'm getting tired of looking stupid pointing over my shoulder!

  • how would u say i want a large combo for like a burger

  • はっ!3:57はなにそれ?おもしろい。

  • Useful stuff, thanks! ^^v

  • It does make more sense for the small one to be....small.

  • i used to say 店内で instead of ここで would that be ok or is that weird?

  • o umm and do they have english on the meno like if you want a flvoured coffe of some sort o.o ?

  • maybe um can you show us if you can like what you mean o.o

  • so why would they need to know if it's for there or to go? do they put the coffee cup in a bag if it's to go? lol

  • Cuz if you say "to go" they give you a paper cup.

  • @BreazyNova In Canada, fast food places and coffee shops like Tim Horton's ask this as well.

  • lol... japanese starbucks makes more sense... the smallest size should be short... not tall XD

  • really really cool video. This kinda stuff seems really useful. Would you be interested in making any similar videos for different venues/situations?

  • lol. i like the way your teeth are lined on the bottom... =] cute :-ju

thank you for the awesome lesson! hopefully i'll get the chance to try them out!

  • I wonder if Starbucks in japan has interesting japanese seasonal flavors? Do they put whip cream on top of the coffee there?

  • @anakin1949 Yes they do. It is the interntional corporate image. Loved going to the starbucks in Naha City.

  • : D This is a pretty great vid. Interesting information!

Also, your hair looks sooooooo cute in this video : DDDD

  • This was very helpful, thank you Hiroko san! :)

  • This was very useful :)

  • Hmmm...I must be reading a bad Japanese book because it says "Ikimasu" means to go. Time to go back for a refund.

  • @akin242002

    ikimasu

is a word for go when you use it for your self. its different from "to go" when you say "for here or to go?" ...difficult language... lol

  • The book's fine; it's a different context. :o)

Think of the example as meaning `take home' or `take out'.

I'd recommend avoiding literal translations between Japanese and English. They're so different that it just doesn't work!

  • Favorited this video for future reference. Great job, should come in useful!

  • Thanks HIroko! Very helpful ^__^

  • That is fun to learn.

    I can not drink コーヒー.

    I do drink ホットチョコレート.

    I love the グリーンティー too.

  • @DOty3

now グリーンティー is a way to call 緑茶(リョクチャ)in english.

    it means green tea though

  • Thank you very much! I've always wondered how you said something like this in Japanese. I will do my best to remember this next time I visit Japan. ^_^

  • Thank you Hiroko-sama.

  • 勉強になりました!

    ありがとうございます!

  • Thanks Hiroko, this is a refreshing new way to approach the language ^U^

I can't wait for more videos like it

  • Wow, thanks very useful ^^

  • It is really hard to switch between languages as you did in this video and you did great.

  • Yay I love caffeine. Thanks for the video post. (^_^)V

  • Really useful stuff - thanks for sharing with people!

I spend a lot of time in cafes, so hear this stuff a lot.

When asking "for here?", I often get 店内で宜しいですか?

(Ten nai de yoroshii desu ka?)

  • How would I say "I need caffeine or I might start shooting."?

  • pfffttt hahahahahha xD

  • Nice vid. Glad to see another one up so soon.
