In this scene, I see so much of Carter's mother in Kem. It's kind of like history repeating itself, and in a way, it's another way that ER has managed to bring things full circle.
Kem decided to have their baby in America to please Carter, she did not have to do this. She lost their child she is feeling alot of pain and guilt. It was hard for her to be there as she had not been back since their baby died almost six years previously. She is not cold, she looked tired and jet lagged. The fact that she turned up to support her husband speaks volumes to me. NO one knows what exactly happened to them as all of it was off screen so I dont see how you could blame Kem for so much
The hatred for Kem on here is shocking. Yes the both lost their baby but how you can compare Carter's experience to Kem is unbelievable. Kem carried that baby for nearly 8 months, then had to go through a very long and very painful labour to deliver a dead baby, Carter did not. Carter then had a network of family and friend around him. Kem did not. She did'nt even have her mother there for her. Carter then went back to work leaving Kem alone in that drab bleak house.
@sharnaleighdean - I agree. Sometimes when something THAT traumatic happens to someone they just can't come out of it. Kem seems to have that problem. She obviously still loves John but she associates him with the greatest tragedy of her life. He still loves her and just wants to make it better but he can't make it better. She has to find a way out of the pain in her own way. I do imagine that sometime in the future they get another chance.
@sharnaleighdean we each deal with pain and loss differently. Carter unfortunately shut down and threw himself into his work, forgetting about the pain and loss that Kem was going through.
she might come off cold but i dont think she realises how much it hurts carter to, like how she says it hard for her to be there well what about him??? she is trying the way she knows how, i didnt like how she went about it when Joshua when he first died that was really cold towards carter... :( i think he should try and get over her...
The fact tthat she came at all says alot. She DOES still care about Carter. But the marriage is probably over. I say probably because it's obvious these two have a history of breaking up then making up. I'm thinking it's likely over though. Carter is tough to say no to and I think the reason she is in a hurry to get out of there is because she doesn't want to change her mind about the seperation. She's trying to be realistic. But Carter is a TOUGH guy to say no to isn't he? LMAO!!!!
There are TWO sides to the Carter/Kem story. We have not seen or heard ANYTHING about Carter in 3 long years. So we have NO idea what's been going on between them in all that time. I don't think Kem was being "cold". I thought that in first viewing. Looking again I don't see it. She is just facing reality that the relationship may be over. Obviously they have been trying and trying to make it work. After all, he married her in season 12. And they are only just now seperated.
Reese, Benton and Susan sharing "Carter as a medstudent" stories = friggin' AMAZING.
Kem, now... I'm working on trying to like her, honest, but in this one, I feel like punching her in the face. If they wanted us to like her, if they wanted us to WANT Carter to get back with her, why are they trying so hard to make her unlikable? Because LOOK AT THE GUY! He's TRYING! he's CARTER! She's cold and self absorbed and he deserves better. *sigh*
6 or 7 seasons ago, Carter goes to Africa with Luca. In Africa, John meets Kem who is there working with the AIDS patients. They fall in love, Kem then gets pregnant and in her 6 or 7month the baby (Joshua) dies. It rips them apart, and Kem ends up leaving Carter. Carter then follows Kem to Paris which is how he is written out of the show. The ep of the kidney transplant we find out that they are separated, but he still loves her. So that's the exchange that we see here.
I hate the way she shuts him out.

Wish Carter and Kem had a bit more closure at the end. Or maybe a confirmation that they'd be okay

I love the development of Benton's character. He is so different here than in season one.

@Victoria0204 wait wait first time he comes back for Abby. To me that's an important detail. He does not meet Kem there, at that point
