I think he has got the bit about consciousness wrong. Schopenhauer argues that the only difference between a man and a grain of wheat is that the wheat is not aware of its plight and is thus more fortunate than man. Does not imply extinction at all.
I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.
He was right and it's a pity. Look at recent knee-jerk reactions from the C of E re Occupy London, which, fortunately weren't implemented. But the almost instinctive inclination to side with the establishment is very unfortunate and does the C of E no favours.

The BBC series about philosophy are great. I can learn about philosophy and can improve my English. Good English is rather difficult to achieve, so it helps...
Generations of Man are born and pass away in quick succession.. individual men burdened by fear, want, and sorrow dance into the arms of death.. as they do so they never weary of asking what it is that ails them and what the whole tragic comedy is supposed to mean..
@shinobirastafari Don't apologise - you have did a great service here to we admirers of Schopenhauer. Have you read Safranski's biography of the man? It's a masterpiece of research and (albeit translated) bracing prose. I discovered Schopenhauer in my early twenties and he radically transformed my lightweight view of life. He is almost always referred to as a pessimist, but I see him as a great liberator of bad thinking, stupidity and poisonous piety.
@shinobirastafari Ah, good! Hopefully, you haven't been plagued with sharp-edged questions as I have! Then again, I'd rather have those than that feeling of 'empiness' which others speak of.
I agree! Safranski has written a great biography which is a reference for Schopenhauer biographies. It brings Schopenhauer back to life, because it is a biography about his life, the development of his ideas and philosophy and the anchorage of all in the time in which Schopenhauer lived and the ideas and philosophy of this time. Moreover it is written in a fresh and great style, which makes it rather easy to follow. His Nietzsche- and Heidegger-biographies are also great!
Schopenhauer may be the most incisive philosopher post Plato

Brings to mind Gandhi's comment:
I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.

@chubbychechu2010 Excellent! Is this a quote from Schopenhauer or your own thoughts? If the latter, maybe you should write a book.

@carlo88moe It is from the end of Schopenhauer's Magnum Opus, titled "The World as Will and Representation".
Beautiful isn't it?

@GordonMorrice Thanks. Read Magee's book on Schopenhauer, which I quite enjoyed.
