Seles killed her in this match...Garrison got her back at Wimby...then she lost to Seles a tough 3 setter I think in LA that year (90) but was destroyed in Houston in 1991..6-1 6-1...Garrison was really not good on clay but tough on grass and HC.
@100BABOLAT and that was in her own hometown - the first and only time she made it to the final in this tournament. What is odd is that Zina was not so bad on clay in the beginning of her career. She actually made the Quaters at the French Open, the first time she played their in 1982 and she even beat Clay Queen Chris Evert 6-4,6-3 straight sets to win at Amelia Island in 1984. If you look at her clay court career, she made semis and quaters at many clay court tournaments
Zina has always been the biggest, whiniest sour grape in this galaxy. It's always somebody else's fault when all the time it's her own unpleasant personality that causes her the grief in life. And her game sucks too. Full of junks and dinks. Sneaky kinda like the person. She strings her racket so loose to produce dink shots that the ball hits it with a oddest puff noise. Most annoying.
Zina Garrison hates white people? What is that statement based on? If you hate white people you dont choose white trainers and coaches and live in a predominantly "white"neighbourhood and dont play a predominantly "white"sport such as tennis..your second statement is true though... she really messed up this match...she had a lot of power in her legs but not enough in her arms and not enough testosterone.. I guess Seles shaved her chesthair and moustache right before the match :-)
@maxymyllyon Garrison always accuses others of racism. When the Williams made racism cries after the 97 U.S Open Zina was the first to jump on the bandwagon. However I think she is the real racist one. I would call her a hostile racial seperatist. She hates white people, and she thinks everyone is against her and the World owes her everything since she is black.
She also sucks. Just look at this clip, unforced error almost every point and no strategy. Cant believe she was top 10 so long.
@heninwarrior Well , you kind of lost your own argument as far as her sucking. I mean let's be honest here - If she sucked so bad, she would have never ranked in the top 100 let alone the top ten for as long as she did. You may not like her for whatever reason, but don't say she sucks. Clay was her weakest surface, that's a given. But what no-one points out ,as far as the flowers, is that the commentators themselves said it was an inappropriate gesture. No-one griped about that
I wish there were more black americans playing tennis and other individual sports. but especially tennis! To think Zina Garrison got started the way she did. Heck, the williams sisters too.
It is an awkward gesture, right before the match. I don't think it was done as a psych out but if I was Zina , I would have thought the same thing, like why are giving me flowers. It was inappropriate.
@trent8002003 Well it was a strange thing to do. Tennis is very traditional that way, they dont like things done that are out of the norm, it is one reason alot see it as a snooty elitist sport.
Zina is also a huge complainer though. Remember a couple years ago she was fired as the U. S Fed Cup coach then sued that she was fired for racism. She had no grounds to makes such claims, she wasnt able to recruit the best players often enough (including the Williams) and the results werent there.
@kerstenfanatic Thanks for letting me know Zina got fired. Served her right. She was the biggest sour grape this side of the Suze Canal. I read her bk and found her to be an even worse fake than I thought she was. She was always full of self indignation and bitterness as if the whole world owed her when in fact she was her own worst enemy.
Zina's racket sounds like the string tension is about 10.

Monica should have sent Zina a nice flower arrangement to apologize for her *egregious* transgression.

Nice hand shake at the end there. Bwahahaha

@LobOverTheBackhand The handshake shows Seles' lack of sport(wo)manship.

And she got her revenge a year later beating Monica in a great match at Wimbledon ,on grass , her best surface. Enough said

If Zina had won, she wouldn't have said shit about the flowers, let's be honest.

yeah, zina wrote about the flowers incident in her book. it bugged her more than losing this match 4 whatever reason, lol.
htownhomie06 1 year ago
Zina's biggest problem was getting her ass handed to her by Monica not the flowers.
neorquino 1 year ago
The flowers were given to Monica as she came on court and she decided to share them . She was only a kid

I think Zina only complained about the flowers because Seles easily beat her and didn't like that she lost to a teenager...

I can never understand this. What's the big deal about the flowers? Not the best timing or the best grace. But who did it hurt? It lasted only secs.
