I remember meeting my tortoiseshell, it was on a fall day, there were a lot of dead leaves on the ground, and all of a sudden I realized the movement in the leaves was not the wind blowing the leaves around, it was actually a little halfgrown cat walking around! Super camouflage.
@ThePetExpress I have a Tortie coming in my backyard everyday! I named it " Coral"... she is a stray so I started taking care of her but my mom "yes I'm under 18" won't let me keep her... my mom likes Coral but thinks that she's an UGLY cat.... I don't think so... well I NEED some tips... any help?? P.S Coral ALWAYS meows!!! Even when she's not hungry! P.S Coral is a girl
I had two tortoiseshells named Pepper and Little Pepper. Sadly they died this year because some rotten asshole poisoned them with ground beef laced with rat posion. He's been arrested for animal cruelty. I only have one tortie, which i call her Paprika.
I have a 4 pound torti female I found on the side of the road in Ohio during the winter of 2008. I pulled over because I thought the kitty had been hit, I wanted to get her way off the road. Long story short, she was alive, abandoned, dirty, sick, very pregnant. I took her home, she got a bath, trip to the vet, which she did not care for. Zoe had a litter of 4 beautiful yellow & white tigers, all adopted in a week. Zoe now runs my Condo, & Me, she also hogs my bed, sheesh!
I never heard about tortoiseshell till reading about hybrids, chimeras and haldane's rule on messybeast. there they say something about male tortie cats and unusual (considered genetically impossible) coloured cats. Anybody have a clue what the later is all about? or some example picture/video/article? thanks.
@hert0g I've heard male Torties are very rare - and almost always sterile. They have the XXY chromosome make-up which gives them the Tortie coloring ( and many have female attributes ). So, basically they experience a genetic mutation while forming in their Mama cat's womb. Sarah Hartwell wrote an article about Tortie Tomcats & Mosaicism - that is where I read about this.
Nope, whether cats get along is down to personality and circumstance but cats are ignorant of their breed. Some cat breeds can be more laid back though.
penny is prettier than all of those, penny is a tortoiseshell and she is the best thing that eer happened to me

@jessica56786789 I am not sure. I don't think the eyes are always the same colour but may be wrong.

Aww... my sister lost her tortie "Selena" in January to liver failure. She was a sassy one to her last day.
The tortie at 1:00 is BEAUTIFUL!!! A perfect combination of two of my favorite cats. I can only pray I get a Mainecoon tortie someday.

@VagrantNoName If was there and if I knew who poisoned your cats, he would regret it for the rest of his or her days. And his days would be short.

@broadsurf
Well thanks I guess. Don't like it when stubborn morons try to kill other people's pets.

1 tortoiseshell cat every 3000 is a male. male tortoiseshell can have a trisomy or can be a chimera.
Those cats (in pictures) are very beutiful, they have beautiful hair.

Lately I got into an argument with some colleagues, who wouldn't even believe tortoiseshell cats exist. Really...

I wonder if it is okay to keep cats of different breeds together. Are there some breeds that don't get along?
