  • Awesome vid! Was just curius if you could send me the exact size of fittings and name of fittings and best places to purchase everything at best price?

  • Best demo I've seen yet. Clear as a bell. Thanks.

  • I already had a spare barrel we picked up for $25.00 for another use over a year ago and repurposed it for this project. You really need a good hammer drill at least for the top. If you don't have one, that's an additional cost for the project. My total cost = $19.00 + 25.00 + 10.00 = $54.00 Rain barrel in the store on sale about $60.00. Do you really save? Hmmmmm...considering gas prices.

  • Their part number was TP 34 P-E. The PVC part for the top is actually a 3 to 4" increaser (not decreaser). The cheapest place to buy the hole saw bits were at Harbor Freight. The ball valve was a 3/4" ball valve

I used 2 nipples instead of 1 nipple and hose adapter...it functions the same. Those were 3/4" X 2 inch nipples. A 4" hose clamp.

  • It would have been great if a comment from the author was left spelling out the parts. I spent more time running around using gas looking for the proper parts than I did making the rain barrel! Napa Autoparts carries the bulk head fitting although it's actually their 3/4". I initially ordered the 1 1-2" one and it was too huge.

  • @foobartours thanks for the bulkhead info, it would be close to impossible to find correct name for the "bung"

  • if you put a water diverter with overflow on the downspout itself, then you wouldn't have to build an overflow system out of your rain barrel. the diverter would stop the water from going into the system once full instead of constantly putting water in and out of the system

  • Thanks for Sharing this Clip... ! Will help many People out there to follow your advice ! Thanks :) Keep up the good work... Post us if you create more Coold & Helpful Clips :)

  • Bulk head

  • Informative, but you did cut a few corners first I'd ream (or rasp) the newly cut hole, next it would be ideal if you cut in such a way that the punched hole piece doesn't fall to the bottom of the barrel where is could impede the lower drain fitting if the level drops low enough.

  • It is the Best demo for the rain barrel.

    I have a hard time finding a Bung for 1 1/2 inch hole.Where did you get ?

    Thanks for sharing this info.

  • @2CUSING The bung was purchased at Schaben Industries in Newton, KS. It is a standard polypropylene bung which you should be able to find at any agricultural chemical/tank supply store. In our area we have a farm and home store called Orscheln's and many other farm supply businesses (look for those that sell large plastic storage tanks).

  • i love this...

  • I've looked at a lot of videos about making a rain barrel & this one is the BEST I've found. I have a barrel just like yours & have tried to make a rain barrel out of it. One thing that I've had a hard time with is the water outlet. I've tried putting a faucet on the bottom of it & have had problems with it leaking and etc. I couldn't get it tight enough because I couldn't figure out how to get a nut behind it. I now know how to get that part right & will install it just like yours. Thanks!

  • @brianmef I noticed that the internet address at the end of your video is missing the .com. Maybe you know that already though...

  • I made two last year and they are great! I opened the valves during the winter and the barrels weathered the 'Ohio winter that wouldn't end' without any problems! I plan to make more this summer!

  • could you use carbon filter for like a fish tank, to make the water drinkable?

  • @hawkdlb06 No, a carbon filter is not enough. Carbon filters simply remove organics, not viruses and bacteria. To make this water drinkable you'd be looking at investing a couple thousand dollars for a complete filtration system.

  • @forthaysstate you can get a big Berkey filter for under $250. Don't use a carbon filter

  • foward slash

  • Where do you get a barrel like that?

  • @hedge313 Easiest place to look would be a carwash as most soaps come in the 55gal barrels. Otherwise check with a local soda distributing facility.

  • @forthaysstate

Thanks so much for the car wash info.

I called around and within 2 minutes a carwash had two ready to spare for free.

    Metal or plastic.

    Thanks a bunch.

You rock for this big time.

    ;0)

  • For the overflow, could u just attach another barrel to it? Then it would fill up another barrel?

  • This is exactly what I needed! The little tips that he gave were perfect. I wish he would make the Tesla videos most of those are next to useless.

  • @donclay23 Yes, you can attach another barrel directly. I suggest elevating the barrel directly beneath the downspout higher than the adjacent barrel and using 1.5 inch PVC with a 90 degree elbow running from the overflow of the downspout barrel into the filter system of the secondary barrel. This is the most cost effective way of doing a joining barrel

  • this is by far the most informative rain water how to video I've seen yet, Thank you

  • I'd like a removable lid for cleaning

  • Great video! Where can I buy that Black Bung from? Menards didn't have one. Thanks,

    Tom

  • @TheTkohler

You probably got one by now but i found the bungs at an aquatic supply store; they don't have them at Lowes or Home Depot. They are called Bulk Head Fittings. This is the best way to install the tap I've seen so far.

  • the over flow pipe size should be as big or bigger then the downspout size. you have to assume the maximum extreme rain scenario. the exit pipe volume has to be the same or more then the downspout volume or it will over flow down the side of the barrel and flood your basement

  • the best video .......for home made rain barrel :)

  • This video is excellent!!
