  • I hate post modernism. I'm glad he just spelled it out for what it is.

Religious comments aside, my main complaint with his speech is the proclamation that "postmodernism is at the heart of public education", which I seriously don't believe. It's more a fad within artists and cliques of self-important pseudo-intellectuals.

  • Strawmen are easily blown over

  • Why I think a lot of people misunderstand postmodernism is that it attacks not just the concepts but the very foundations they are on. One won't argue about the objectivity of the word democracy. He argues the very language itself you use. Is your idea of democracy the same as everyone else's? Who is the author of the absolute of that truth we call democracy? It's like saying to everyone "I think everyone should be monogamous because they are happier that way." It's obvious that's not natural.

  • He says its irrational and yet postmodernism doesn't defend rationality. You're using modernist tools to destroy postmodernism. Not a lot of sense. I find it insane to think we have truths we share locally that can't be seen globally. How is this hard to understand. It should be more apparent and obvious now than ever before especially with the advent of Youtube and media sharing and globalization.

  • I hate Postmodernism to the core, but saying that the statement "there are no big stories" is self-referential is not a valid reason to dismiss postmodernism because you can not be asked to prove a negative. Likewise, saying that "you can not derive an ought from an is" is an "ought not" statement does not mean David Hume wasn't right with his Is/Ought dilemma.

  • im not on this guys wavelength, but the whole "there are no "metanarratives" is a itself a metanarrative" is an interesting point

  • This man's analysis lacks rigor. He makes several statements about culture and the public sphere with no meaningful reference other than parenthetical "ya knows?". It's somewhat ironic this guy speaks so badly of postmodernism. Christianity hinges quite a bit on the ability to divorce the scientific method from religious Truth. I'm not being hateful or acrimonious-- that's just how it religious people think. In fact, most people today think like this. That's why now is the postmodern era.

  • Awesome speech so far. Where's the rest? Hopefully one day we'll convince the emperor of post modernism to put his pants back on but until then you're going to have to deal with low ratings and ignorant hippie comments ;-)

  • This person is possibly the girliest lesbian I've ever seen.

  • narrow-minded windbag

  • This guy is... horribly misinformed. :( Also patronizing and highfaluting.

  • This guy is a smug, patronizing, daft cunt.

  • You or him?

  • Obviously the guy in the video.

  • Relativism is not the same thing as postmodernism. You cannot equate the two.

  • This guy has not studied postmodernism at all. Postmodernism does not tear down ALL metanarratives, only the modern metanarratives. Postmodernism doesn't comment on universal truths. Postmoderism is tearing down the universal truths propagated by Enlightenment philosophy... namely that universal truths are discovered through reason.

Postmodernism is basically saying that truth can be found in art, beauty, feelings as well as reason. Reason is just one element to truth.

  • does post-modernists debate over simple facts like a 2 inch line drawn on a sheet of paper or 2+2=4? is that what post-modernists do...debate about everything?!!!! i need help with this confusing postmodern philosphy! someone please help me understand it better!!!

  • @856956sinewavetones postmodernism is not necessarily relativism wholesale (rather "relativistic"). and one language-game is not completely "separate" from another language game. they overlap because words, language, and meaning vary from culture to culture, from one academic discipline to another, and from one "form of life" to another. but that does not mean there is no common place of dialogue. we just have to take on each dialogue one at a time.

  • He leads to a good point though. People tend to justify an evil act by placing the act in a particular context.

  • Wow this guy can not differentiate between post modernity, hard plurality and universalism.
