Love this. Thanks for posting it. I was always a fan, and was lucky enough to meet him at a show once, so I'll have those home movies playing in my head forever! :) R.I.P.
I agree. Musically, I hear it as a more fully-formed version of the Beatles' "Nowhere Man". Lyrically, it's the oldest story ever (love lost) told from a stunningly unique perspective. And the original studio performance is heaven on earth.
I've loved this song for years...but didn't find the actual lyrics
till today.
What is the singer's point of view? Is he speaking from a woman's (lesbian?) point of view? Or he speaking for a guy dumped by a lesbian he has a crush on? I'm new to Big Star so it's hard to piece together the true gist of the song right now.
you should! both the chilton "1970" cd and -especially- chris bell`s "I am the cosmos" are treasures to be sought out by all BS fans...both well recorded, too and far from just outtakes.
For sure, decades later both bands are still influencing musicians all over the world. I think the Lennon/McCartney songbook contains a lot more pop classics, but they had seven years (approx.) of writing "together". Chilton/Bell had probably less than two years - one album and part of a second. Every tune is solid, not a throway in the bunch. So from the standpoint of consistency, I do think Chilton/Bell have the edge.
love alex and big star, but i dont know that you can compare 2 maybe 3 albums against 16 granted they had less crap songs but thats just law of averages someone who plays 300 football games is gonna have more shockers than someone who plays 30,, plus they had the Beatles to open the frontiers but regardless of all that its a sad day when we lose the likes of Alex Chilton
Jesus Christ. Yeah, I'm sure the legendary Big Star are just fucking thrilled that you think they sound like a second-rate hack like Tom Petty, who started recording with the Heartbreakers 2 years after Big Star broke up the first time. More like Tom Petty sounds like them. Learn where the shit you like comes from, it didn't spring into the world fully formed.
So someone doesn't know...no reason to castigate them for it. And Tom Petty is far from a second rate hack. Any BS fan who would say that is just being a pretentious, lying asshole. Petty, Chilton/Big Star owe it to The Byrds, who owe it The Beatles and the folkies, who owe it to Buddy Holly and Lonnie Donnegan, who owe it to blues and country, who owe it to Brit Isle folk music...all the way back to the first drum beat. Don't be such an asshole.
If the world was a perfect place, Big Star would have been just as big in the 70's as Led Zeppelin. Nay, BIGGER. I love Zep, but c'mon, it's Big Star for crying' out loud!
Another good reason why I quit watching TV. I'd rather have my own memories of a fantastic pop song like "September Gurls" rather than having television tell me what my memories are. So sad. I'll pass on the "70s show."
Actually as i had already owned no.1 record, radio city and third for about 10 years i was just hearing a song i had played to death for years. But i apologise to the world at large for liking a tv show...
What a major dick! It's great they used Big Star on a hit show. That's a great way for people to learn about them and give them a listen and help spread the word. Any more monetary assistance the surviving members can get is a plus, right?
i was glad when i heard that the new orleans disaster did not take mr. chilton from us (he was reported missing for about a week). an american treasure
One of the best pops songs in the history, and one of the best band...right here, right now...It´s all too much...o sea, una de las mejores canciones en la historia, de una de las mejores bandas...aqui...no puede ser cierto... "it´s all too much"
Great clip, I never get tired of seeing it. I would love to see them play live. It would have been even better if Chris Bell was still around, but oh well.

Actually, I'm pretty sure that was originally said by Paul Westerberg, in the Replacements song appropriately named "Alex Chilton."

I genuinely believe Big Star was the best pop band that ever walked the face of this earth.
In my opinion the Chilton/Bell songs even beat those of Lennon/McCartney.
Chris Bell you were brilliant! May you rest in peace.
