I already have bet my life on that and seen first hand what kind of headache I got from it. My standard issue ACH can and did stop a 7.62 round at 212 yards
Hey, pardon my ignorance, Im not in the service but I had some friends that were that wore the 'fritz' in GWI, and it looks like this helmet the more I look at guys in the field, leaves an awful big amount of vital head/neck areas exposed to fire and shrapnel? Why are the lives of our service men and women being risked this way? Or am I missing something?
@79lpcustom The 8% of protection was deemed "Unnecessary" So they switched from the PASGT to these types of helmets because they supposedly offer greater situational awareness and field of view.
I have seen a kev. stop a 7.62 round, and if you let any one get close enough to pop your grape with a .45 round then you need to go home in a pine box.
@poobed666 The most powerful rifle currently in use in the U.S. Army is the .50 BMG. At the moment there is NO type of armor that can defeat this round, and to do so with conventional armor materials would be extremely impractical. A more common rifle round would be the .308, Body armor plates can defeat this round, but making a helmet to defeat it would again be too impractical. At the moment Helmets can only stop pistol rounds or smaller rifle rounds at longer ranges such as 200 yards.
helmets (kevlar) are designed to stop frag from indirect fire and other secondary missiles. the kevlar helmet shown here will NOT stop direct fire from anything larger than a .22. Kevlar helmet is designed for people in impact areas/guard duty/convoys/etc where explosions and secondary missiles (objects propelled from the initial explosion) are a danger and might cause head trauma. all rifle rounds will penetrate, and most pistol. if one of these stops a bullet its purely by luck.
@lonestar54r when that happens its a freak accident. for every 'miracle bullet' there are hundreds of direct ballistic impacts that pass through completely. I've worn these things on the ground, I've even shot them up to see what would happen. any ground pounder can tell you these things aren't designed to stop direct fire. that information is also included in the safety brief for this equipment upon issue. kevlar ballistic helmets do exist, but the standard one issued to our troops is not.
@machinegunmana no I know it's not for direct fire, point blank, from high powered rifles. I was one of said "ground pounders", and I know it's main function was for shrapel, but it does offer modest protection from incoming fire, and I wanna say direct impact up to 9mm.
@machinegunmana ive seen a soldier get shot upside the temple with most likely an SVD (in Afghanistan, a long range shot), and received just a concussion and a lump on his head
Good video & Great Point! I don't have any Kevlar helmets at the moment I would like 1 or 2. I did get a U.S. M1 helmet tho, not gonna stop a bullet but its better then nothing. Really would not matter around here if something went down most of us are good guys but the bad ones are armed the same as us. High power everything 7.62 rifles and .44Mag handguns. Besides we are not like the dumb city people around here about half of our village has a meeting point so we all can cover each other.
holy shit boy yall reminded me of the shit the captain used to yell. yall are thinking a civilian is gonna need a cover? yall must be joking me.....ha ha ha ha
You can find the first generation kevlar at gun shows for about $50-75 bucks, also you can get the type the Bundeswehr uses, pretty similar to US types w/cover for $75-100, less w/o cover and for about $200 you can get the latest and greatest w/all the padding and different type chin straps more suited for better protection against IED's.
I'm sure it will stop a 7.62x54R from 500 yards, but point blank. no. Helmets are more of shrapnel I think. I mean, its a great piece of equipment. I would not leave home without it anyway. Oh, and you can head butt ppl with it on too, and it hurts like hell. LOL
"Where is your fuckin' cover"? How very well put!!! The "cover" or hat, or lid, or brain bucket, or whatever you want to call it....is so very often overlooked by those who wish to be prepared. Great video!!!
@Failcard I believe my ACH will stop a .45 round. The .45 is a pretty slow projectile, and even though is has decent energy, it'll get depleted pretty quick on one of these helmets. The protection varies between different hlemet designs, though.
@millerusaf Even old polish steel wz. 67 helmet will stop a direct .45 hit so there's no doubt new kevlars like MICH (ACH), LWH, wz. 2005 etc. will stop that bullet. In some conditions (angle of hit) this helmets can stop more powerfull bullets (there are a lot of examples - even a LWH helmet "bouncing off" 7.62 x 54R round from SWD) ;)
@Failcard Saw an old black and white video from WWII where a GI shoots a dummy with a metal Nazi helmet with his .45. It doesn't penetrate the helmet but leaves a large dent, probably enough to knock out the bad guy for a little while.
@Failcard This helmet (and others) won't stop most rifle and pistol rounds. There are cases where people get lucky with certain pistol rounds and manufacturers boast protection vs. 9mm rounds but in terms of rifles, the only cases of guys surviving direct rifle hits are rounds that either come in at a sideways angle or in a very few cases rounds that skip off the NVG mount and then enter at a deflected angle. A direct hit from a bullet to this helmet is game over.
@ARjordanMY Thanks for adding to an answer that was already thoroughly clarified. I'm well aware that a .45 ACP can't penetrate a helmet. Even if I didn't truly specify which bullet I was talking about.
Yea, the old "brain bucket" saved my noggin a couple times on convoys. We hit an Iraqi speed bump just South of Taji in our PLS and both me and my Driver hit the ceiling of even with seatbelts on.
Another time we were crossing the border into Kuwait and the ammo can for my .50 cal fell on my head while we were going over a rough patch of road.
@BlackFencePatriot Just google 'balistic helmets' and a lot of dealers will pop up. Some have some great deals... however there are some out there that require a Military ID. Just shop around... and whatever you do avoid Botach Tactical!
@BlackFencePatriot surplus stores sell these sometimes. They are not bad helmets. The Army got the design rather good this time. You can find them online as well. They normaly go for $100 in stores, depending on your location.
Same type of helmet I'm using over here. I do convoy ops, funny enough you should mention it lol. those things work wonders if you're getting bounced around.
@BlueCollarSurvival No they wouldn't. They won't even stop an arrowhead. But, they were good for flying debri and protecting your head from stuff falling on you.
Well, if you'll check Bisquik3006's response to my tac-tickle video you will find that some are in fact donning ye olde brain bucket. Sailingmanuel is currently sporting one as well. J/K, I do actually see your point on this one. Keep taking good care of your people over there.
@xCASDGuyx The problem is that in some states, body armor and kevlar helmets are illegal or law enforcement use only. So, even if they have it, they probably aren't going to post a youtube video about it.
I have a PASGT helmet. I want a MICH, but they are retarded expensive! Even the suspension system "conversion" kits are outrageous. I'm not sure about how they size them, though; I wear a 7½ in BDU-type cover and have a Medium PASGT. Idk if it's the right size. It seems to work. I need the conversion kit, though. Those metal clips and junk in the strap system are a bugger on the head.
Good video, informative, and you make a valid point about head protection especially how all these "tactical gurus" only talk about ballistic vests. Nevertheless, most of these helmets are only available military & LEO's. As a civilian and just an average working class person, I'm not wasting my limited resources & time on dressing up like a mall ninja. I rather spend my money on a couple of well made firearms, good ammo, professional + practical self-defense training, and range time.
Gotta cover the dome in battle. My own experience has been a little less critical of that given the "non wartime" nature of it, but I can't imagine being where you are or in any other hard core true war situation without a helmet. Important and unique topic as always.
