  • Teddy's great and is his own artist. But NO ONE writes and plays guitar like Richard Thompson! A serious musician could make a life's work studying his song-writing and guitar playing. He's inimitable.

  • Teddy has taken the best from his mum and dad and!!!!!!!!!! Well !!!!!!!! Just listen from 1:22 onwards and you'll know what i'm trying to say. :-)

  • Goosebumps...

  • This is the one.

  • music is R Thompson, written for a soundtrack - words by Tim Finn and on his solo Album - fantastic song and great performance - thanks joni36!

  • @hanniganfrank , I recently posted the original instrumental version (actually co-written by Richard Thompson and Peter Filleul) and by request have subsequently added more music from the 'Sweet Talker' soundtrack...for devotees of RT everywhere!

  • Could this be more beautiful?

  • It's one of the most beautiful songs...I put it it a friends wedding to clips from my iphone, she loved it (i thinK!) nah she loved it, this tune made it.

  • this guy with the hood observing kinda looks like the kind of guy who was seen in intervalls while bob dylan and baez had there magical performances together (in the hard rain live stuff).

  • Beautiful beyond belief. I adore music that can draw tears from my heart. I feel so ALIVE right now. Thank you! SPECTACULAR!!

  • @scragger07 ... The music was written by Richard Thompson and originally appeared on the soundtrack to the movie _Sweet Talker_ (1991). He later asked Tim Finn (Neil's brother) to write words, and Tim included that version (with Richard playing guitar) on his 1993 album _Before & After_.

  • Only heard about Teddy a short while ago. Now can't get enough of him. This song with his old man really is the DB's

  • One of the finest songs written in the last 30 years. Oh, hell, just one of the finest songs ever. And an awesome performance. I saw it when it was originally broadcast, and it completely floored me. And, as has been pointed out on another posting, the 'that's my boy' grin that Richard has at 3.50 is priceless. Thanks for putting up the video.

  • Pure,pure genius.Thanks Richard and Teddy.

  • they are so beautiful together, and harmonize so perfectly.

  • The girl I always wanted, desired, imagined a life with... went away and lived her life with someone else. I'm with her now. She's my wife. Women at the post office coo when they hear our love story. But it's a tragedy. All we missed. All that could have been. I loved that girl so. I still do.

  • I will always be a man who's open to persuasion. I still believe it.

  • touching...

  • anyone who doesn't like this is an idiot!! Killer song

  • His son looks like Linda Thompson. Is he her son?

  • @MrBasilGanglia

Yes Richard and Linda Thompson were together for a good while and left some really footprints behind them not only a son but four or five really top class albums

  • What a gift this song and performance is!

  • Teddy was born in a Sufi commune!

  • Oohhh just so brilliant !!

  • You know I come back to this every now and then just to remind me how good it is.

And it still is utter magic

  • This is fantastic. A great, simple, effective sound. What a cracking melody and beautiful lyrics

  • Again, a reason for music

  • It must be one of his proudest moments....a song with meaning, being sung with your son. I doubt Teddy will ever forget either. Good on 'em.

  • His best songs are so tortured. ... that is why they are so memorable.

... and that's why they are the best.

  • @sharpedgedguy I dont think it is his song.....its actually written by Neil Finn.......however RT does a great versiion to be sure

  • I think this is the best version of the song on the web (the audio portion anyway)

  • There are no words...

  • listern and love

  • Just beautiful. Would love to hear this when I see him in October.

  • Thanks to RensStella for this beautiful share

  • beautiful!

  • awesome song, awesome version

  • Beautiful.

  • Beautiful soulful and so real! A joy to hear! Thanks!! Joey Vaughan "World Blues Attack"

  • wow

  • Just wondering wether anyone knows the chords for this, I can't find them anywere.

  • @Jakkal115 kiwitabs.derail.co.nz/index.php?page=viewtab&id=231

  • @hughlilly fail. the link that is.

  • Sublime. Richard brilliant as always. Teddy's vocal timbre owes a lot to Mum.

He's got great musical genes! What a family!

  • @Velocity500,thank's man,it was a special night for sure,he stepped on the little stage and says ":what?? where am I" and everyone just busted out laughin and he just ripped into a song and never really stopped, then for his last he did the "B" song as he called it,it was almost as if he was so sick of singing it,but to me it was pure magik cause the song has big meaning to me and to see him perform it about 3 feet away was simply amazing.

  • Very nice performance. I like the expression on RT's face at about 3:50 and wonder who he was making eye contact with at that point.

  • Easily one of the most beautiful songs I have ever heard.

  • Richard made a very rare appearance while blowing through town in Amenia NY ,I think 2005?? it was at a Inn/Rest,and the seating was for about 60 people, very intimate.I was lucky to get there early and get a seat middle front.Actually I got there so early, living only minutes away that he and his family were on the patio at the inn having private moments I said a quaint hello, left and then came back.I bought My Takamine cutaway with me and he was gracious enough to sign it.WHAT A SHOW HE DID

  • @marlok1964 In a similar vein, and what shows who RT is, he did a show in Seattle back in the early 90's (he was dating someone from near by). Well, something was off, cause usually his shows sell out, there was perhaps 40 people in the club. Did a great show regardless, and came back afterward and sat down amongst the guests at a table and did an encore sans mike. Then spent about 20 minutes just responding to questions and talking about music, life, etc...amazin

  • I know there are those who disagree with me but I thinkTim Finn sings this to fast.

I've seen them both do it live never seen them do it together now that might be something.

Having said that it would be very hard to better a version I saw Ricghard and Teddy do in Vicar Street in Dublin about 5 years ago it was pure magic.

    t's a magic song

  • Gorgeous guitar and silky-smooth vocals, but does it make me shallow that I prefer the livelier Tim Finn version?

Either way, I'll make sure to listen to more of the Thompsons' work!

  • @defenestrator12 no it doesnt make you shallow...to each his own. this version however is just so much more soulful which finns version lacks.

  • So beautirful..

  • I can really hear Tim Finn's input here.

  • @Dalekbeer Yep, you can. A wonderfull tune.

  • This a case where "like father, like son" is so true. Teddy is SO unbelieveably hot and sings like an angel. He can be my next husband, if he wants.

  • i remember the first time i heard this song, where i was, who i was with and who i was thinking of - 12 years later, its the same feeling everytime i hear it.

  • Nice!

  • Incredibly melodious performance...

  • A beautiful song, writen with Tim Finn.

  • The proud father with his son. It's beautiful.

  • Teddy is amazing too. Guess the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.

  • uptheriv,

I remember seeing Teddy with Richard a few years ago and wondering if he had the goods. Then I saw him on his own and heard his album of country covers and thought, "Well, shit...he's got it."

Here's hoping he's got the same longevity as his father.

  • long long career and he just grows and grows

  • I knew what a great songwriter Thompson was when I first heard his early work with Fairport Convention. He's also a wonderous guitarist and has a very unique and emotional voice. This is the first time I had heard this. What a great song .

  • Simply remarkable.

  • What a beautifull song. Perfect. Wonderfull guitar playing.

  • I wonder why but mysteriously I found this video funny.lol

  • This is so so so beautiful!!

  • This song was co written with Tim Finn.

  • hey all added "foxes" by richard thompson check it out!

  • That was so beautiful...haven't teared up in a long time when hearing a song.

    Thanks.

  • I love them both, but seriously, Teddy's voice makes me shiver everytime. It's insanely beautiful.

  • Music at its best!!!

  • I'm speechless....................

  • ok mitchwild........i have sat here and listened to 3 or four of r t "s songs...........i concede...........the guy is awesome.

    im a convert !

he is right up there if not a couple of rungs above dave

  • I'm glad you took the time to check out more of his stuff, while i wouldn't say he was a couple of rungs above, i think he is a very prolific writer with a razor sharp wit.

Look on my page and you will find a group page for him, he is very popular and has many fans all over the world.

While your about it, put some favorites on your page, that's what it's for, subscribe to my page and become one of my friends, then we can share our knowledge and love of music.

    Sounds like fun yeah?

  • This is wonderful. We love RT.

  • I'm going to see Richard in December here in Ca. It's been too long. This performance makes my heart serene.

  • I could listen to his moody voice all night.

  • Wow. What an expressive, lilting melody. Superb.

  • So moving....Beautifully done. Thank you Richard & Teddy.

  • Brilliant song and singers!

  • I was shown this song last night at a get together, now I carnt stop listening to it, Teddys voice is just beautifully angelic and we dont need to say anything about Richards skills really do we. PURE GENIOUS!

  • A lovely song

  • The blend is there like it used to be with his mum. I can hear a Finn melody on the two swift lines before the refrain. The melodic feel of the verses sounds like rt. I always assumed it was atrue collaboration? Perhaps Finn visited LA from Bath. Two oft favorite songwriters on one tune!

  • stupendo

  • Brilliant

  • One of the most gorgeous songs ever!

  • No doubt, RT is a great songwriter but this one is a Tim Finn tune.

  • I believe RT wrote the music and Finn the lyric. That's what I've heard from more than one other source, anyway.

  • RT wrote the tune. It was on the Sweet Talker soundtrack (1991) as an instrumental. I believe Finn wrote the lyrics.

  • Cor Teddy don't half look like his mum on this! (Shorter hair obviously)

Brilliant lyrics, smashing tune, cosmic performance.

  • This guy is in a class of his own. Just bought the Best of THe Capitol Years CD.This one is on it.

  • No better CD to have; each song on CD is lovely. RT continues to inspire and give such a joy of voice, guitar, lyrics. Songwriting Genius.

  • The perfect song, by my favorite artist and his son, it cant be bettered, check out Mr thompson's daughter too, what a family!!!

  • Don't forget the mother Linda.

  • Yes, of course a very talented artist in her own right.

  • Beauty upon beauty!

  • Look at the still short at 2:07. The two are standing exactly alike: heads cocked in the same direction, holding their guitars the same way. I love it when you can trace family in a stance or a shake of a head!

  • Man, I saw him live last year I think it was. Just him and an acoustic guitar. No drummer, no bass, and it was pure awesome! I loved it so much. RT is amazing

  • Stunning ...

  • How is it that Teddy sounds almost like an American country singer?

  • That's his chosen genre. He has played back up for Roseanne Cash and others. He did the major soundtrack song for Brokeback Mountain. What a sweet, sweet voice. Perfect with his Dad's raspy, "been around" voice.

  • Loved the video. Thanks for posting.

  • OMG what a duet, such talent. this was such a wonderful experience hearing RT and his son. Thanks for friends sharing or I may not have found this wonderful soul RT. Peace and Love!

  • No cinders but I must look it up, but thanks for the tip

  • A really lovely recording of a lovely song it's really a shame the world never woke up to Thompson , he's been a hero of mine for over 40 years,

  • Yes, but I don't think he aspired to great fame. This way he's like a special jewel just for his fans. He gets to make the music he wants without selling out, and we get to claim him as our own. Have you seen his Black Cab Session? Fantastic!

  • I agree with you wholeheartedly. RT is happy to be making a good living without selling out. For us fans he is a treasure, a well-kept secret. This performance is perfection. Wonderful video. joni36 scores again!

  • gorgeous, moving, sweet and poweful.

  • This performance blew me away first time I saw it in 99 - still does.

    Thanks for posting it

  • Absolutely Beautiful. Love Teddy's Voice!

The Son has much to live up to

    Wish his the VERY BEST!

  • wow

I love Tim Finns version but this is something else

  • Fantastic Song

As well as on Action Packed, there is a brilliant Richard/Teddy version on the wonderful live album 'Celtsmersch', which you can get from Richard's site. Its a great acoustic live album, only released to fans.

  • Will these two ever tour together? I had one of my wishes granted the other day when Bush left office. If I could see these two tour and perform together I would think I died and was living in Scarlett Johanson's panty drawer!

  • Abstracting ourselves briefly from the fact that this is "just a song" -- there is something powerful and poignant in having both an older and a much younger man express the same sentiment -- "I've always been a man who's open to ..." -- ie, time passes, but some things don't change... Tel j'etais autrefois, tel je suis encore. Thank you for posting this, joni36.

  • Lovely. I've got most of RT's albums but this is the first time I've heard this song. I checked and it seems to be available only on Action Packed: The Best Of The Capitol Years, which is annoying, since I've got all the other tracks on there, I think. Great song, anyway. I guess I'll just have to go and spend some more money.

  • BEAUTIFUL!!

  • Awesome. And more.

What a delicate and regal touch.

    And, God, the voices....

  • Daddy - I wish you were a man open to persuasion.

    I still believe it..

  • Was that a proud, fatherly smile I saw at 3:50????? Teddy has a GREAT VOICE. He should show it off more often.

  • Thank you joni36, still a fav...if not my no. 1 fav...just beautiful.

  • They are brilliant live!

  • Absolutely perfect!! Such a tender, delicate and well crafted melody - only RT can deliver - plus the apple does not fall far from the tree. Nice work guys - makes all the different to me *Thank you* 5*'s

  • Just amazing. Teddy has rather scary teeth though! Pass the garlic someone!

  • Yeah, they're very white and sharp.

  • Beautiful duet. IMHO, Teddy's voice has a very smooth, sweet quality, more similar to his mother Linda's than RT's.

  • And he looks so much like her it's startling.

Great blend here between father's and son's very different voices.

  • My favourite song and I have seen him many times. He invites requests from the audience, I called out for "time to ring the changes". He pointed out that it needed harmonies and invited me, a complete non singer on stage. I bottled it and did not go up. DOH!!

  • Goosebump!

  • Written by RT and Tim Finn of Crowded House. Appears on Sweet Talker (soundrack) on Capitol (1991) also a version with Teddy Thompson on Celtshmerz - Live 1998 (FLYCD007)

  • Forgive my ignorance, but who's song is this? I can't find it on any of my RT albums.

  • it's on his hits album and is labelled as previously unrecorded

  • Teddy is fantastic

In my opinion he surpasses his dad on the vocals on this one.

But again that`s just my taste.

They`re both amazing in their own ways

  • Scary now are they? Funny :)

Love the voice thought, that`s what`s counts..

  • Nice version

  • Teddy sounds much less nasal during this live performance than he does on the recording on RT's hits. And as for RT - what can you say. The man is a genius

  • this is unbelievable what of the most beautiful duets ever tt and rt awesome

  • yes, I totally agree. I saw him in Nashville on June 15th. He is a doll...I spoke with him, professed my affection, the man offered a hug, which I find amazingly sweet. I really appreciate such a wonderful memory...besides the fact...one awesome concert!! His new cd is great.

  • TT was beautiful then, Still is

  • Does anyone have any other videos of these guys together?

  • please comment more on his incredible guitar playing and not if he is marriage material or not like an issue of Teen Beat. Yeesh - tell your hubby to take up the guitar, how 'bout that?

  • c'mon lighten up a wee bit. RT's musical credentials are up there with the very best. He also has a wicked sense of humour and would be mildly amused by venustomars' light post.

  • Exquisite! A work of art.

  • this is so awesome, love the richness of RT's voice, blending with TT's fabulous emotional and innocent voice (and looks). What a blend of experience and sweetness...I can't decide which one I'd cheat on my husband and that is, if I just had to...just made up my mind.Wow, F, Wow.

  • awesome

  • one of my favorite Richard songs- he is the best for drawing characters - and great to hear this sung live with his son, who's a top singer too.. I know the words to many of his classics.

    Thanks so much for posting.

  • RT didn't actually write the lyrics to this song. It was an instrumental to which Tim Finn added lyrics.

  • Dude. I have wanted to marry Richard Thompson since I was little. Biggest thrill of my life was when he played "A Heart Needs A Home" from my shouted out request (heh, and he teased me a little) when he played at the Crest in Sacramento.

    Swoon.

  • I saw this father/son perform this a number of years ago and I have longed to hear it again. What a thrill to find this video.

  • what a wonderful thing when father and son perform together, and something like this...thank you.

  • SO TRUE ABOUT THIS LIFE

  • Such sensitive treatment of a well-written song. Some things, like this performance, are so beautiful they cannot be explained.

  • At last! Heard this with images but never w/the two of them on screen! Two of my favourite voices & a wonderful song! Walking on air...thanks!

  • Great

  • best when father and son do sing it.

    Nice job men

  • A good duo, but Neil and Liam Finn are much better!

  • I've loved this song for a long time, but seeing them perform it live is something else. Best father and son duo, if I do say so myself.

  • Very moving, beautiful vocals and guitar playing. Tim Finn wrote the lyrics to this song and released it as a single. I'd actually forgotten that RT wrote the music.

  • I saw Richard a few weeks back in Paris. Brilliant gig, as always. I'm open to other people's theories as to why he's not a hell of a lot more famous than he is. i reckon he just gets disgusted by the music business. What do other people think?

  • I dunno - I think he IS very, very famous

  • great song i love Richard Thompsons music

  • subarasii!

  • Oh wow, thank you thank you thank you. This is so beautiful. Have seen Teddy live once, and Richard numerous times, and would be thrilled to see both together While I'm waiting this is such a great substitute. It matches all the brilliant things Richard and Linda did together (not least producing Teddy to keep things going!)

  • Perfect. Just perfect.

  • I never thanked you for posting this. I have listened to this at least a couple times a day since you posted it and have shared it several times. I love it. Thank you. AGS, still extremely grateful for your version. Great intro to the whole youtube scene.

  • I can see Linda in Teddy's face, but I hear Richard in his voice. Now... if he can just grab some of his Dad's guitar craziness, lyrics and melody... we'll be set for another 40 or 50 years!

  • this is the sweetest version of this song; thank you for the excellent post. with tears still streaming...

  • I 'm glad you found a live performance video of this!

I wish you would of found it a couple of days earlier it would have saved me several hours of making a slideshow version. Oh well :-)

If you want to you can post it as a video response to my version so people can see the "real thing" 5*s from me!

  • gorgeous song..two immense talents..They both pour their hearts into their singing. If only Linda could have joined them!! All three of them have released briliant CD's this year.

  • really great video, teddy looks so much like his mother
