Im new to bass fishing and was looking for a rod that I can use for every lure in my tackle box. All the rods I have seen are for a specific lure(crank bait, finnese, etc)?
@30secfisherman What about burning spinnerbaits, pulling deep diving crankbaits, I don't think pitching and flipping in heavy cover is a finese tactics. Finese is light line, light weight slow delibriate presentations such as a shaky head or drop shot.
ive got a good one the real is a pinnicle solene the rod 7ft abu garcia conolon w/ 12lb triline. nex time i was gona put stren original on it to try or do u have another suggestion for line
B-R-A-I-D. I'm not pushing Spiderwire, but it has been my choice all along (even w/ probs ...) I use Stealth (adds another 10+ feet to cast) Again, I recommend the 30-50lb test. (See website for reasons)
@Sleytownmafia NO NO NO no braid...FLUOROCARBON. Fluorocarbon casts farther and it's damn near invisible to fish. Braid is good for 3 things: topwater (because it floats), flipping/pitching in very thick cover with poor water clarity, and MUSKIE FISHING! Even for the vast majority of flipping and pitching, fluorocarbon is a better choice. Don't believe me...??? Yesterday I heard Denny Brauer speak at a seminar. He uses 25lb test fluoro for everything but punching grass mats in florida
Does this mean I've wasted money on baitcasting combos made by Shimano and Pflueger? I fish for bass and all of my baitcasting rods are 6'6". I have a six footer from bass pro shops back in 1985. What good can my six footer be good for?
Chill, dude! I am a big Shimano fan (that's a Curado in the video) I have bad memories of "cheap" combos (<$40) from basspro; I STILL hv backlash probs w $200 reels ...
6 1/2' is the meat & potatoes rod. If you fish from the bank or under tropical jungle, a 5 1/2 - 6' rod won't get tangled as much overhead. I have a 9' flyrod & it is a BEAR in heavy cover!
If your equip is working for you, you are a better fisherman than I am!
In a nutshell, cheap combos are the chicken way out to prevent from having to spend money on real gear? I have enough to feed the needy and the greedy when it comes to baitcasting rods. I have three 6'6' and one 6'. I'm good until the end of my time. With a hobby like ours, it shouldn't be taken lightly.
@Jimmy16447 longer rod is usually better for flipping (7'6" is what pretty much everybody in the competitive fishing world uses), but if a short rod is easier for you, by all means use it lol. and yes, short rods are easier to skip with
Back up a step. The clip is to tell why you would or would not choose a baitcast over a spin rod. Would need another clip if you've decided on a baitcaster. Basically, don't look at reels under $100. (I have a Shimano Curado & Ardent XS1000 [gift!] on St Croix med-hvy 7' rods )
Yeow, I'll try! Before flipping, there are 3 parts to a baitcast reel to be adjusted before the first cast: drag/star wheel, the spool control wheel (the small, pea-sized knob), the "magnetos" or weights inside the reel to counter-act bird's nest. Adjusting takes over 30 seconds, so take this to a tackle shop to set!
I have seen a flipping switch only once; it works opposite to a baitcast clutch, more like a spincast. Push down to lock, thumb up to release (I think ...)
Sounds like you might have two problems; first, loosen the little knob on the reel (about the side of a large pea); press down on the thumb clutch; let the lure you are going to cast fall -- 2 seconds max from your height to your feet. Too fast and it needs tightening up.
Second, sounds like your anti-reverse/magnet is set too tight; see if you can't get help setting that right.
Also, I have seen that pros are carrying different rods/reels for different lures/weights. so you're ahead!
on my baitcaster i cant fish ne kind of light weight cranks or spinners it goes staright down is there ne way i can with a bait caster cuz i want to be able to fish with no wieght artificial plastics or shuld i just stick to a spinning rod for no wieghted plastic and light wieght cranks ??? thanks
Ive been practicing with a old scholl mitchell reel! and im to the point where i am ready to purchase a nice one.....i really love browning products but im not sure about the midas....is that a good reel?if you could purchase any reel which would it be?
Whoa, absolutely no idea! Apparently the ONLY reel I know how to spell is Shimano -- which I notice a lot of guides use (they get a really good deal?!) I bought a Curado [baitcast] for $120, tho now I see them for $200. Otherwise I would go to Wal-Mart & buy any Shimano spinning reel they had with Quick-Fire II.
Ooo, torn on this one ... the longer the rod, the stiffer I would want it. Usually use 7'+ for finesse fishing, pitching jigs etc. really don't want a lot of whip/misdirection on the tip.
6'6 is a bit short & I would go for medium, because I use the rod for the space I have to cast. I fish 3X as many places w/ my 6'6 as I do my 9' flyrod!
Another thought: a spinning reel is behind the hand while the baitcast is in front, so the balance of the rod and where the "true" handle is will be off.
oooooo, the differences are that the spinning rod has the larger ferrules and has them on the underside, therefore the clip for holding the tongue of the reel would also be on the underside, forcing the baitcast reel to be underneath ... so I would recommend "no", but possible? Changes handle position from right to left ... I know, having to spend another $50+ just for a stick!
I have only 30 seconds -- not 6 minutes, but it seems we are not in disagreement.
We talk about "birds nests," but I think we need to show just how bad it gets. I wish I had had a camera when I had Spiderwire explode one day; impossible to knit out. Learn WHY it's important to spend $100 on a good reel vs. hours of not fishing because of roll-on.
I note we both use Shimano Curados ($130?) ... and do not over-spool line.

MAJOR Ooops! That is a Bass Pro Shops Megacast 6 1/2' combo in the video -- not a Curado! my bad ...
30secfisherman 2 years ago
@RANGERROCKET25 no, a short rod is easier to pitch i think, and is also good for skipping.

@Jimmy16447 The longer the rod the more line you can pitch out, also when your flipping, you can have more line out = longer flips.
Ryan0Ebbers 7 months ago
@RANGERROCKET25 6' rod can be decent for skipping docks, but that's about it. (shorter rod = more control, but less hookset power)
