@xchimino2 Google for the term "tom pryce accident uncut" and you'll find that video on liveleak. You can't see much detail from the low quality video so it should be fine if you're curious. Just don't go to Google Image while searching for that term if you have SafeSearch off, you'll end up with other unrelated photo you'd wished you've never seen.
@mrgribble I've just seen it unblurred. It looks like it almost cuts him in half, hanging on by a small bit of skin perhaps, so the legs and the torso are stretched to maybe two feet longer than usual.
Note that Van Vurren moved across with & slightly behind the other marshal. I would venture the other marshal moved first having (adequately) judged the opportunity to cross. Van Vurren was following his lead and due to delayed reaction time, momentary inattention, hesitation, or just plain falling behind, he got caught. So, considering how the marshals were moving together, I think Vurren was relying mainly on the other marshal's judgement, good or bad, and it didn't work for him or Pryce.
@MuLK3y What could they have done for him? He was literally ripped in half. There are uncensored clips of this in slow motion and (sparing the bloody, gory details) it's obvious he's dead before he hits the ground.
If Pryce did not die in this accident, no one would have remembered this incident. Though Pryce was travelling at 150mph, the fact that he did not make any attempt to apply the brake on a straight line with two moving objects in front of him at a place where an accident just occured means that he was more interested in winning this race than being careful. Brakes works in formula one thats why drivers break easily at corners.
@mosorire NO no thats wrong, Pryce's impact with marshal was at 175mph approx. The first thing was that the car right in front of Pryce tried to dodge because he had clear vision- he missed the first marshall by millimetres apparently. Pryce had blocked vision because of car right in front but even if he could see clearly, the speed equates to 800 metres every 10 seconds so even with 100 metres to impact you have just over a second. The poor marshals were naive
@deniro220, After reading your statement and watching this video again, I agree that he had a blocked vision. Regarding the speed, F1 breaking can work in a second, thats why drivers break easily during overtaking or when parked cars or debris are on the track. Look at how the last car in this video slowed down to avoid debris by moving to the right. Remember Purley parked his fast moving car and even crossed the road in a naive way to save a burning Roger Williamson.
@mosorire dude, it takes people about 3/4 of a second to apply their brakes as a reaction to something like that....in that 3/4 of a second he covered the length of a football field...what was he supposed to do? In a race, nothing is supposed to be on the track but the cars...how could he have realistically ever expected two marshals to be strolling across the damn straight, especially when he just came out of a turn? And communication wasn't as good as today's technology..no way he could know
@geetphuck, Pryce aint at fault cos his vision was blocked. In the 80s and 90s, an average F1 car can brake to a stop in 3seconds from 200km/h covering 100m so 1/10th of a second would have given the marshal the 3 metres to escape death. A modern F1 car can brake from 200 km/h to a complete stop in 2.21 seconds, using only 65m. F1 is about 45% acceleratioin, 15% deceleration and 40% near stopping/ stopping at corners and immediate acceleratiion again. The best asset of an F1 car is the brake.
He aint walking that off anytime soon....this is why we teach kids to look both ways before crossing the street and never try to outrun or dodge traffic.
theres other videos of this its absolutely fucking sick when you think about it. thank god its bad quality though, i'd probably have thrown up and had nightmares for weeks if it was 2011 HD quality
and thing is the poor marshal probably also had family and kidz and such but no one remembers him noor his name .... kinda sad and meaningless death if u ask me.
the car aint even on fire, whit no one in it...i think he could have w8ed a couple of seconds before entering the track, dont think the first driver realized what really happened... i seen the non blurred out video and omg there was like nothing left of that poor marshal...and just to be real honest it was the marshals bad both him and tom pryce got killed..
in my eyes, this is the most horrific accident in the history of motorsports. do your friends a favour and don't mention it to them unless they already know about it. when I first realized what had happened I threw up on the spot. even when I was 15 and knew instantly that my favourite driver, greg moore, had died in his 1999 accident I didn't react as strongly as I did to this
the fire extinguisher that is carried by the marshall hits the driver of the car on the head and kills him, the marshall also dies due to the impact with the front of the car
He was 70% decapitated from the helmet strap. The blow was so severe the fire exteinguisher flew over the grand stand and landed in the parking lot. He was dead long before the crash into the barriers.
@Braddersj32 the fire extinguisher struck Tom Pryce on the head and killed him. That has been proven. The car striking the marshall at 200 mph killed the marshall outright.
wow this is crazy, the guy did like a triple front flipped! no wonder they blured it out know should have the right to see this. but what i don't get is didn't the guy look before he passed?? i mean the cars are comming at 200 m/h and he just passes by..
@TexacoEmmoGODsPilot Also I would like to add that the accident took place at the top of the straight, meaning you couldn't see very far down the road.
@juni172 I have seen the footage un-edited.....its not a pretty sight. It's a shame these things happen, and goes to show just how quickly one can loose their life.
@juni172 yeah that just after the "kink" which is a bend in the track. It may have been difficult to see oncoming cars, and if you're a 19 year old kid with little experience, probably hard to judge it's speed and distance as well
@octaviocgsa ...well, not "cut"; that is by any car part or anything. His body was launched into a spin so fast and violent that it couldn't withstand the centripetal forces on it, and fell apart in mid-air. The "unblurred" video shows this clearly, at least two sections of his spine disconnected (at the neck and pelvis) and all the surrounding tissue tore apart - strictly due to the incredibly high "G" force loading of the spin induced by being struck at the knees by a car going about 200MPH.
Since the accident happened at the 'top of the hill', I'm pretty sure people couldn't even hear cars coming. In 1977, the fastest way to communicate was probably by talky-walkies - no PCs, cellphones or anything like it then. For many years people used this very footage ( and the 1990 Vancouver Indy deadly accident) to show how crucial communication is a part of marshalling.
yes i know.. and i know the car could explode.. but there were about 4 F1-cars in the way, how could they think they could outrun them!? they could have waith for the cars to run past, they would be gone in a sec anyway
@Olemwrongway not sure if you're familiar with Kyalami in those days, but the straight goes up, then drops off. There is no way to see whats ahead, its completely blind.
Our friend Favetta25 uploaded a clip named 'O ultimo GP de Tom Pryce'. At the end we can see safety crew extracting Pryce out of his car. First time I ever see post-crash footage. Just as gory...
Van Vuuren was ripped to pieces. In other vid's you can see bodyparts fly and even some organs slip out of his body, to land meters further.
Even if he had smashed with his face into the ground, he would be indentifiable. They knew it was Van Vuuren because he was the only one not showing up when they gathered all the marshalls together.
I can 100% assure you his entire upper torso was in one piece - head, arms etc..
The car hit him on the shins and it's possible that after he hit the ground his legs ripped off at that point, or at least were sliced into - the moment he impacts the ground his trousers come off completely and don't move while his body keeps sliding so it's hard to tell - a lot of people at that race say he was cut in half and that's maybe what they meant - getting hit at 170mph doesn't need exaggeration!
The marshal was NOT ripped apart - unidentifiable because he smashed his face into the ground; his trousers came off, he spun violently,; debris from the car was flying through the air then he hit the ground violently face down and skidded into the fencing (along with his legs, like a rag doll), which completely messed up his face
just look at the video response, it's obvious he was ripped apart and it's not just his jeans flying away. i know we want to think it couldn't have been that brutal and it's just his clothes but many sources say he was completely dismembered and unrecognizable after impact.
its wrong, so so wrong, but i would have to say that russell phillips crash at charlotte was worse, his head was ripped off, hand stuck in the fence, and he was torn in half
@crakajack3 i totally agree with your comments. however, the only positives that you can take from this and the russell phillips incident is that car and marshalling safety improves. But it doesnt help the victim.
the body "ripped" is not true, it's only an illusion . seeing carefully it was clear the pants had been ripped away, but the body was intact. however, RIP.
His body was so badly destroyed that the only way they could identify him was by gathering all the marshals and figuring out who was absent. He was only 19, the poor bastard. But it was very silly of him to run across the track like that. Not only did he lose his own life, but Pryce lost his as well.
the track marshall should've been stationed on the left hand side of the track becasue most cars if they're racing clockwise would stop left, hence the track marshalls need not have taken the risk of crossing the track....
If you really want to see it I ain't gonna stop you...but its extremely graphic.
Just type in 77_pryce on google and you should find it. Or if u give me your email address il send it to you. I know its 1 month late so im sure you've already found it.
that was the worst way 2 men could die...one loosing half his head while doing well in his career and the other cut in half by the last one while doing his decent job..... aint life a bitch?
Hans Joachim Stuck, the German driver in front of Pryce's car, sensed the 2 marshalls crossing the road and swerved slightly (at 180 mph!), avoiding the first marshall (Bill) by centimetres it is thought. Pryce was unsighted because he was behind Stuck and it was just over a rise on the track. He hit Jansen Van Vuuren at 170mph. Tragic death of 2 young men.
that stupid fucking marshall. its sad in all. am not laughing or joking about it but he crossed the track without looking, tom pryce didn't stand a chance. tom was from my hometown. the fact that tom had no chance of preventing the accident
Dont forget even back then these cars are still doing 300 plus kms at this point of the track and the martials are unsited for the corner entrance onto the straight. A sad day for motor racing...legend lost
now kids remember, look both way before crossing an F1 track.

its wrong, so so wrong, but i would have to say that russell phillips crash at charlotte was worse, his head was ripped off, hand stuck in the fence, and he was torn in half
RIP
crakajack3 2 years ago
@crakajack3 i totally agree with your comments. however, the only positives that you can take from this and the russell phillips incident is that car and marshalling safety improves. But it doesnt help the victim.
paddyhyland 2 years ago
yea but they won't fix it until something terrible happens, and then they can't stop fixing it
crakajack3 2 years ago
@crakajack3 You are correct.

the body "ripped" is not true, it's only an illusion . seeing carefully it was clear the pants had been ripped away, but the body was intact. however, RIP.

@Spazio1999forever
Yeah, and since his shirt is red, many think he was ripped apart.
Obliverate15 2 years ago
Actually, if you look up the incident online, it clearly states that the body was cut in two at the waist.
crownofthevalley 2 years ago
is there any vid where pryce is seen being crashed?
obilinx1 2 years ago
I've seen some pictures a few years ago... trust me, you don't wanna see that... :(
KastleSL700 2 years ago
You can also see Tom's helmet rolling across the track on the far right in the picture at 0:18
One of the most gruesome accidents :(
MWPompert 2 years ago
absolutely right. This detail was never seen before.
Spazio1999forever 2 years ago

His body was so badly destroyed that the only way they could identify him was by gathering all the marshals and figuring out who was absent. He was only 19, the poor bastard. But it was very silly of him to run across the track like that. Not only did he lose his own life, but Pryce lost his as well.

@ROONTANG Oh, just imagine the kid's mother when she saw it.

Crazy , neither man probably felt anything.....rip.
zachos 2 years ago
the track marshall should've been stationed on the left hand side of the track becasue most cars if they're racing clockwise would stop left, hence the track marshalls need not have taken the risk of crossing the track....

SFSylvester 2 years ago
Hans Joachim Stuck, the German driver in front of Pryce's car, sensed the 2 marshalls crossing the road and swerved slightly (at 180 mph!), avoiding the first marshall (Bill) by centimetres it is thought. Pryce was unsighted because he was behind Stuck and it was just over a rise on the track. He hit Jansen Van Vuuren at 170mph. Tragic death of 2 young men.
ivangrozny27 2 years ago
that stupid fucking marshall. its sad in all. am not laughing or joking about it but he crossed the track without looking, tom pryce didn't stand a chance. tom was from my hometown. the fact that tom had no chance of preventing the accident
WillHapgood2 2 years ago 3
Dont forget even back then these cars are still doing 300 plus kms at this point of the track and the martials are unsited for the corner entrance onto the straight. A sad day for motor racing...legend lost
blockheater26 2 years ago

the bloke with the glasses in the first 3 seconds looks like the track marshall that crossed the track with jansen van vuuren.
What was the point of blurring van vuuren when he got hit?
y0utubemetube 2 years ago
yes the first marshall is bill who crosses the track with jansen
