It's primarily spoofing 90210 which creator Star had previously worked on.
If you've ever seen the movie "Primary Colors" this is the same type of thing--a transparent spooftainment of something which had really happened in the past.
Having watched 90210 and Primary Colors both, I adored this series. It was like fusion cooking for television. Unfortunately it's probally why the WB did not keep it--it went over the execs heads.
Hey. I 'member this vaguely; Marcy's character got killed off but instead of get fired she got play her sister, no? lol do have/remember "Call me, Ishmael." by any chance? Forgot what exactly the scene was but worth a shot I figured.
Y'know I also remember in the episode or a following one, the fate of Kim actually depended on a message board, and it was almost unanimous, with many subject lines reading "LET KIM DIE." Interesting, yes?
haha, I'd completely forgotten about "call me, Ishmael". I remember the blonde girl (forgot her name, haven't watched this in ages) saying something like "He's not talking to an answer machine" or something like that.
Wasn't Kim Cattrall on this once too?

@DaxShaw No. Cattrall didn't have the 'soap' /TV drama background that Davis had (from Melrose Place)

It was cancelled because of low ratings. The show received great reviews from critics but not enough people tuned in.
