  • fantastic song

  • I wish Jars of Clay should sang this inspirational song and make this a remake. ;)

  • very inspiring song...

  • Keep in mind the "a worldwide religion" part is about wanting people not to fight about religious differences.

  • I had Ultravox playing in my car on the way to work today and Hymn came on. I forgot how good Midge Ure is...This song seals the deal! I just bought "Answers to nothing" on Amazon. Amazing!

  • the year this song came out and the movie I myself was going thru a very difficult time in my life, the song help me refocus my direction in life. Peacecore, the U/N and I do what I can for the planet. It is trully an amazing song from the heart. I was 28, I'm now over 50 something, still working on solutions to some of these questions....DON'T GIVE UP

  • i'm not sure that guitar would make the sound in that solo...but i could be wrong...it doesn't sound like a hollow-body...

  • midge, you are magic.

  • midge, you are the apitmomy of cool.

  • I fell in love immediately with this guy's talent when I heard this song. I never listened to Ultravox, but I bought every album from his solo career. He's the best.

  • luv n stuff this thanks

  • hey nonbeliever, it's nice that you have a nice attitude...what God is is so different to so many people. helping people and kindness is a good place to be whoever we are... d in toronto

  • LAst night i watched new about kids i Africa. Dear God, please help those children. They were starving in a way i can hardly imagine.Dear God, i m not a believer ,but please help all the children in Africa.

  • @imadownboy It's nice that a non believer has a nice attitude. All we need to do is to help others in need, and not that to have that selfish attitude of just thinking of themselves. Wish people would help other people. sigh..

  • BEAUTIFUL song. Lyrics are just as relevant today as they were in 1988...maybe even more so.

  • i'm a simple man with simple words to say as well... if only I had the bright blue voice of Mr. Ure. Magical.

  • AWESOME SONG!!! Gives people hope in a hopeless world. Look to God folks, he wont let you down!! Keep this in mind, we leave Him, He doesnt EVER leave us!!!

  • Dear God instead of sending santa down my chimney this christmas could you send Midge Ure please?

  • christian bands must've been influenced by this song, even though Midge wants there to be a worldwide religion......I can hear the likes of Rich Mullins in this song.

  • Brilliant song!

  • <---------If you love this song, please check out my rendition and leave your comments. Have a great Xmas and NY! x

  • In the hands of a lesser musician, I would've been throwing cutlery by the first chorus. Thankfully, Midge Ure is a truly talented artist. I wonder, though: what's he been up to lately?

  • @DarkWraith Midge is still keeping the music live and doing an awesome job - saw him in Lincoln last night - he was fantastic! Loved every minute!

  • @angeleyes1969 Well, that's good to know. I hope he keeps on making music as long as he can; his talent is a gift from God.

  • @DarkWraith Agree with you absolutely. Just imagine, Cliff Richard could have got there first. Aagh.

  • @71TattyTeddy Yikes. Heh-heh.

  • Katei, I agree. People who dont care about the planet or the human race to say the least. Its like Im living this awful nightmare of how some people ruin it for mother earth.

  • One of Scotland's most treasured ambassadors!

We are so proud of him both for his superb musical talent and his undying efforts with Live Aid and associated charities.

    Love and peace forever!!

  • I remember watching this on Canadian TV in junior high.

  • Reminds me during my college days ! What a nice song. . . This song must be re-released by Midge > it would be a HIT am sure. It would further screws up the mind of the people in the whole wide world to open up their mind for our love to god and to our countrymen.

A song notes > everything must be in place and in order. Peace, Love, Food, Religion, etc. . .

  • reminds me during my college days . . Nice song. Got a tape of his > i played it nth times.

  • @havingfun1968 This song was released in 1988, years before the movie was released.

  • Dear God please forgive the lustful thoughts i have towards Midge.

  • i flat love midge ure. he's one of the best mates this old broad ever had . love you lots ya lilliputan glaswegan

  • no body grooves the way midge does. period. shazam1059

  • to były piękne lata i piękna muzyka

  • excellent song. Pay close attention to every word!

  • @bronxboyXXX if the idiots in charge would listen...it would b a better world.

  • @sinister066 Why would they do that when everything is running like clockwork for them?

  • @supersweetguy nope taking the mick with a mate. and the "daft dancing" little glaswegan does always make me laugh.

  • the daft "dancing " always makes me laugh

  • Wonderful song!

  • @TheSandsie13 I love this music since 1988, when i first heard it over the radio here in Manila.

  • @Supersweetguy REally nice song. First time when i hear it :) Is a real prayer :)

  • @GreatQueenSeonDeok Thanks. I am happy that you love it. Mwahh.

  • Midge has so much more meaning in his songs when you study them. This is such a lovely song, and when i memorise this, I'd use this to pray on Thanksgiving.

  • One of my favorite guitar solos.

  • This is such a powerful song which we should all take note of. God Bless Midge, he is someone who has a made a big difference to people's lives and especially through 'Save the Children'.

  • my most favorite song ever!!!!!! i love this song...

  • basically this is what we should pray for, the very things we need right now.

  • Still love this song , and the message is still important... What happened since then? Nothings changed, just like the music: 80´s WAS and still IS the greatest of all tmes in music history! 80´s FOREVER!!

  • @CollectorOfMusic me thinks dis smacks of sarcasm....have u ever been 2 vienna..lol.

  • Nice guitar solo

  • To pen this song, Midge is obviously a true humanitarian. Wish there were more like him!

  • Love this Song!! Anyone knows the Guitar Chords? thanks!

  • this was posted on my birthday! thanks for posting

  • This is an inspirational song especially when you're down and out. This will help you and let you be strong....

  • This is such a poweful song that has stood the test of time. The next coming months are so very important and we must believe that we can make good things happen in our lives again.

  • I too was in SE Asia about the time that this was released. It was 1989, when I first came into contact with the song first; I saw the video decades later. Powerful lyrics; powerful images from a lovely Scottish man.

  • I never get tired of coming back to see and listen to this video/song! Im glad I bought it when it came out and it still sounds just like yesterday

  • I´m looking forward the the the concert in Bochum !!

Anyone else going to see him live ?

    GENIUS

  • um passado muito bom linda musica

  • This song bring back memories of 80's decade long gone by. This song should serve as an inspiration to people, it should also serve as a glimmer of hope and encouragement.

  • @Supersweetguy This song shows me that there ARE people out there who care and pray for others and the comments on this page reinforces that belief! Thank you for showing me this song.

  • @01bashfull This is a song when i question my own sanity in this world. When i hear this song, i begin to reinforce my own strength because I know i can make it in life!!!

  • This brings back memories. I used to love this song way back then and it's still great. The early '80s were great days for me and the late '80s were dark days for me. It got better in the early '90s but this song is from some of the dark days I was going through. This song was a glimmer of hope and encouragement during the dark years in my life.

  • Love this beautiful, inspirational song and always have, always will. Thank you for posting it.

  • Surreal

  • Midge Ure gives me...beauty, poetry, harmony, happiness, love...PURE ART ! He's like a gentle balm...:)*

  • give me....

  • está música e sua melodia são minhas fontes de inspiração, considero esta umas das melhores músicas golpeis do mundo

  • This song is an inspirational song for me. It reminds that people nowaday blame God but cant seem to see what they are doing. This song has a meaning even today.

  • Good song, good message.

  • Midge has always sung from the heart. This song is no exception as well all have a hard time rationalizing spirituality in a world of hurt and hunger. Phenomenal artist, and a true talent.

  • this video reminded me of my teen years... AMAZING song

  • My mother loved Midge Ure and Ultravox. This song holds a special meaning for me. God rest her soul.

  • The 12" extended version is beautiful, worth getting a hold of! To me it's a song of frustration, knowing that these things being asked for are not easy or just can't be obtained.... too many people criticising this song are really missing that point...

  • @desertlonghair You are right. the 12" version of this was amazing. Such a beautiful song.

  • @desertlonghair

in 1989, i was 13 years old here in Brazil, I watched a novel called "O salvador da pátria" , and this song " Dear god" was one of the musical themes. I miss this time!

  • dear god - thanks for midge ure and ultravox!!!!

  • ditto! :)

  • I love the ones who think God does the good with the bad. It'slike saying only the Devil does all the bad. This song doesn't say who's to blame or who to give thanks to.He wants answers and wants to believe in something bigger than himself. Every religion is right and wrong at the same time. It's all about faith and to belive in something you can't hold in your hand, but must held in your heart.

  • ....or perhaps it isn't an issue with pride at all. Perhaps they just don't happen to share your beliefs?

  • People's belief right now are so fragile. They should strong enough to resist temptation. By the way, what a great song. Stood the test of time.....

  • THIS IS A GREAT VIDEO+GREAT ARTIST!

  • I would like to meet some of those kids that were in this video. Twenty years ago must put some of them in their early 20's and 30's. Great song and should be played more often on radio instead of the negative things some of us here today.

  • Dear god...what an amazing song this is. Still love it as much as i did back in the 80s when i first heard it. Great stuff!

  • It's sad that twenty years have passed and the world is just as "restless" as it was then, if not more so.

This song needs to be re-released! I'd buy it again.

  • I remember when I first heard and saw this video..It grabbed me and I taped the music on to a cassette. I still love it to this day. It's so powerful and timely NOW! Too bad that the crap in videos today send out the wrong messages!

  • I remember hanging around the radio for hours waiting for this song to come on with my cassette player on play/record with the pause button on!

  • We do need some peace in a restless world. We need to ask ourselves what we need so we can help each other and have a better community. It MUST NOT break down.

  • I feel like a total dunce, but my forte is basses...can anyone tell me what brand of guitar he's playing..is it a Strat?..sweet midgexxxxx

  • Who knows what the guitar is...but I wish I was it! Btw I reckon this is one of the best shirts he's worn. Great song by one of the few artists who really cares about the world! :)

  • I have commented before on this video...I grew up with this and other great songs like it and will always consider this a prophetic and lovely song. Bittersweet for me.

  • Haven't heard this for years (my version's on cassette and no player), though it runs through my head often.

It's especially nice to see the video again and know that it wasn't just the Mountain Dew, chocolate-covered espresso beans and the fact that I was studying for my pilot's exam at 4am that made me think this song was great! It has definitely stood the test of time.

  • Always one of my faves...Was shocked when using his version on the movie "Dear God" with Greg Kinnear...awesome

    Sweet,sexy Midge!!!

  • Classic. Timeless. Prophetic. Indeed!

  • Oddly enough, I like both XTC's and Midge's "Dear God". The first because I'm an atheist, and the second because I just like the song. OK, full disclosure. I like Ultravox, and 'Passing Strangers' is one of my favorite songs of all time.

  • first heard this song during a spat with being homeless. it kept me going. now so many years later and being in a good place now. after heart attack and triple bypass surgery it still has great meaning to me.

  • Reminds me of Rocky Mountain Idaho and Wyoming in the winter of early '89. This song brings it all back!

  • midge at his best.

  • I believe this song was "banned" for a bit on American radio stations in the 80's...churches thought it was "blasphemous". Or, it was on the chopping block to be. Anyway, I loved it then and it is ironic that today it is still pertinent. Sad that it is, but it is still a GREAT song by such a talented man. LOVE IT!!!

  • u r so right mate..people tend 2 forget this mans part at live aid and the do they know its christmas song. a true pro to the end throuout his career.

  • Hope someday everyone "gets" this message. Midge is a great talent, incredibly humble guy and wonderful writer and musician. Thank God for Scotland!

  • Too right!!!!

  • Dear God..he looks soooo fricking good in this vid...xxxxx

  • HaHa!

  • Considering our world today, verses our world tomorrow, verses our world when this song actually first came out...How Prophetic

  • First time I heard this was in Manila, Philippines on DWNU FM 107.5 - May 1988.

Never got over it ... considering where I was at the time.

  • Correction: May 1989.

  • So do you have the album of Midge Ure? I also heard it on NU 107 here in Manila. Cool huh....

  • Yeah, I heard it too along with XTC's Dear God. Good for you!!!

  • great song!

  • Nice. Didn't he cowrite the Band Aid Christmas song with Sir Bob Geldof?

  • Do you mean SIR Midge Ure??? He actually wrote it and Bob Geldof changed one line of it...Thank you Queen of England...:-p

  • Sorry...Queen of the British Empire

  • For 20 years I have not been listening to this song, and now I have the surprise that I see it by video for first time. Thaaanksss

  • So surreal! I first heard this song on a ski trip in Idaho driving through the mountains in Feb. of 88. I can still picture the scenery when I hear the song. Beautiful!

  • I can't believe this song came out 20 years ago! It's a testament to Midge Ure's place in music history. I hope he makes music for a long time....

  • foxhusky, thanks for posting this video. This is one of my fav's. It speaks the truth. It makes me cry as well. I thought I would never see this video again.

  • You know this isn't the video I recall seeing here in the states but it's still very good... This song is so powerful that it nearly brings me to tears each time I hear it... The message is unmistakeable to me anyway.

  • @ luvesgirl: I never realised there are more versions of this video. The video I uploaded is the only one I have and have seen. Thanks for your comment.

  • @foxhusky Thank you for posting this video. Before I saw the video here at youtube, i was listening to this music way back in 1989 here in Manila. What a beautiful that speaks from the heart. Thank you so much!!!!

  • This beautiful prayer greatly influenced my youthful days especially during the latter part of the '80s.glad i found this video.
