Autism is not "on the rise." The DSM categorization simply changed so that it's easier to be diagnosed with it. Those who get diagnosis get help earlier, so it's a good thing. There is no "epidemic" here.
@Sheldonwh Well, I was misdiagnosed at a young age, as were many of my friends. And we were all verbally abused. I think someone should look into this.
@garland531 In the realm of science, this is called "anecdote," not evidence. Just because you were misdiagnosed doesn't mean that there's a problem with autism diagnosis. I have a friend who was diagnosed with lung cancer, but later tests revealed scaring on her lungs from Valley Fever. Do you now believe that lung cancer doesn't exist?
I love inspirational documentaries, I recently read a review by MARTHA WADE STEKETEE in Urban Excavations about a new doc called Caris Peace. The film tells the story of an actress Caris Corfman who has a brain tumor as well as short term memory removed. Without a memory Caris thought she could never perform again; however, w the power of friendship and the her strong will Caris makes it back to the stage. here is the review link,
wow this is great, a movie that involes kids that have autism. i have aspergers syndrome, a high functioning form. this is cool that kids with autism are part of a movie.
@multisnootylives1 Okay, you're clearly ignorant and simple-minded, so I'll explain this in simple terms so you can see my point. Bill Gates has it. Steve Jobs had it. Einstein. Thomas Jefferson. And they have all accomplished more than you ever will in your pathetic life, as will all autistics who are not tricked into self-hatred like most are today. So next time, do some research before you decide to troll on random videos because you think it's fun to make people mad.
I have autism too.Its hard for me to make friends for us kids.I know I've been there.I am so glad others are helping me and other kids like me to be normal.
The typical neurotypical cannot explain in words the benefits of being neurotypical, nor can they logically explain the social constructs in which they want us to participate. I think they need a cure for neurotypicality.
@MultiSnooty they do these things so thatr autistic children who are miracles in and of themselves aren't put in a box as crazy or undesirable or stupid
My brother is autistic, and my friends from school r trying to show this movie at a near by theater to help raise awareness. this is one of the most inspirational movies i've ever seen
Haven't seen this yet, but HBO always makes great documentaries. The thing that parents have to understand is that you have to be super involved with your child's learning process. It takes time and effort, but so does everything else worth doing. There is a new web service that just launched - rethink autism. rethink autism has a huge data base of lessons to help treat autism. It's done wonders for people I know on the spectrum, but you do have to be involved.
That was a great movie. I have Aspergers, and I am a musician/singer/songwriter. "Wait a minute, how can you get on stage and play music before an audience if you are autistic?" It just happens I am both autistic and artistic. We auties can do great things.
my sister has aspergers and she is very artistic (drawing, not really music) and she hates all of the "curing Autism" organizations (autism speaks organization) and i agree, because there isn't anything wrong with her, so what, she doesn't really have any friends, but she said she likes it that way. I talk to her a lot and she seems happy! : ) and it IS true, auties can do great things! ( my sister calls herself an aspie!! : )
@tealrabbit53 I know how you feel! My younger brother is mildly autistic, we think he has aspergers, he is SUPER intelligent, he's really into history. I was watching an atism speaks video and it made me kind of sad, I mean yeah those parents do have to go through a lot, and it's not easy, and those kids will have to fight their whole lives, but there is nothing wrong with those kids. I wouldn't want my brother to be any different!!!
@2TJW it's not weird at all. actually, it's completely normal. aspies show to have a much higher IQ than neurotypicals on average. you've clearly been tricked into thinking AS is a disorder/disability. we all thought that at one point, i was once guilty of self-hatred because of it. but then i started doing my own research and found that the media is wrong about us. PM me, we really need to talk.
@tealrabbit53 I love you for this. You're one of the few neurotypicals who actually gets it. Please help us by spreading the word and speaking for organizations like ASAN. The media will not listen to us so maybe they will listen to neurotypicals on our side.
@healthmusic Actually, it's very common for autistics to be good at art or music. It's also common for them to have an above-average IQ. I think the autistic and artistic genes tend to be inherited together, which is basically proof that aspies have always existed and been amazing, intelligent beings.
PLEASE check out a great Children's book about Autism, PDD and ADHD called 'Why Is He Different?' this film was absolutely amazing. it had me laughing and crying. it was just amazing absolutely positively amazing and touching. i watched it too many times to count
yankeegurl r u autistic, and yes the world is very very cruel, ive seen other autistic kids out and about with their parents and i gotta say i was SHOCKED. one boy was non verbal and was very fustrated, and some women near me said, "would someone shut that kid up?!?" i wanted to scream at her. poor kid.
Wait... are you kidding me??? someone gave karen71875's comment a thumbs down?? Whoever you are, let me ask you, do you go around kicking puppies, slapping icecream out of little kids hands and laugh at the idea of a bag of wet kittens? Douche bag...
It's not just the parents, autistic individuals do their best to cope in this world. By that, they endure people who degrade them for either entertainment or for profit. When I was a child, I was the only autistic child in my whole community and I had to put up with a lot of B.S. from my school and from my family. Back then, no one had any expectation for me, but now, I have enormous potential as I could go to some top colleges like Baylor after only one SAT test despite my social problems.
@karen71875 how are they anymore heroes then parent of children with down syndrome or cerebral palsy, or mental retardation, neurofibromatosis. ect what my autistic children parents so special?
@MONIQUEIJ its because its coming in to more and more families each day i know this because i am autistic so don't put it down till you understand where what, how, and why we do the things we do
Great Movie. Thank you for helping to educate people in the field of Autism. Please check out our channel, and read the description. SEARCH is a resource center in California, helping families with autistic children. It would mean a lot to Suscribe/comment/rate/share/collaborate with us! Thank you!
I really cant believe some of the insensitive comments that were made on this movie really if you haven't experienced what it is like to love someone with autism and have people judge them and make stupid ignorant comments when they know nothing about what they are talking about is sad and so unfair this movie was very well made and i believe our children are perfect just as they are if people dont like it keep your ignorant comments to yourself!!!! and keep it moving!!!!!
I think this film is great for many reasons, not the least of which is that it exposes more people to what the autism spectrum IS. Based on some of the responses, more information should be out there as well more entertainment that's inclusive.
Thank you for your comment. I like seeing a response on Youtube that is constructive and not confrontational towards a commenter who is either ignorant or a troll. Autism is a difficult disorder because it is often invisible and incomprehensible to the world at large.
This was a great film. I felt bad for the parents whose marriages fell apart due to their love for their children. Wyatt didn't need to be there, though. He was just sensitive...
1:can a doc tell if kid has autism by looking @them in a sonogram?
2:seems like autism has just exploded in the past 2yrs.idk about where you r,but where i am now every kid has autism. i know so many ppl who throw the word around.call retarded ppl autistic just b/c it sounds nicer &'every1has it.' gotten to the pnt where hardly any1 can tell retarded child from actual autistic one. its a fad to call kid w/"problems" autistic.wonder how many ACTUAL cases of autism there are,we may never know.
to super high iqs and adapted social skills and what exactly do you mean by "problems"? generally, if a child is misdiagnosed with autism, it is becomes they are displaying autistic symptoms, which can be caused by severe adhd, behavioral disabilities (oppositional defiant disorder), learning and developmental delays, speech and/or hearing delays or disabilities however, the numbers are not up BECAUSE of these potential misdiagnoses
AUTISM IS EVERYWHERE,and its scary when ppl like u shrug it off
first: can u tell if a kid is autistic from when they see the kid inside of the mother through that machine, i'm sorry, words fail me right now.
second: autism just seems like it's exploded these past 2 yers. seems like every child with something "wrong" is labeled autistic. i guess it's a fad now to call any kid with retardation autistic just because it sounds better. so how many ACTUAL cases of autism are there? we may never know.
ok you are SO uninformed so before making ANY judgements or stating ANYTHING about autism you should really research a little on your own. Yes autism has exploded, there are many theories as to the reason for that, from mercury in vaccines to chemicals and preservatives in foods, etc How dare you, though, call a serious and growing disability a "fad", of course many children may be misdiagnosed, but autistics have wide ranges of iqs and symptoms, from low iqs and failure to thrive (retardation

Hey patchyxx, I hope any child you have has the same thing or worse, and that someday something happens to you so that you actually do lose control and shit yourself ALL THE TIME
I could not believe the ignorance in how you responded. Have you not ever had someone in your life suffer from cancer, surgery, illness? If not, I hope you do have to suffer the loss so you get a reality check!
ur right bumsen dk, they always think that just becouse you have autism means your diffrent. Well everyone else is so how can that prove that were "diffrent"?
@BumsenDK that is true i agree with you one hundred percent 1. because i am autistic i have aspergers syndrome a high functioning form of the disorder and i know as well as others words hurt
In that case, you have a very sick sense of humor. I work with children who have autism. From your comment it seems that you are ignorant and heartless. I sincerely hope that you can become a little more understanding. And, what exactly do you expect when making a comment like this? It seems that you are looking to cause conflict. How very immature.
Fantastic and extrodinary do not begin to describe this film. This is the first movie that made me cry in a long time. I cried many times throughout learning about these kids and watching them in their everyday life. People need to see this film.
LOVED this show! My son has high functioning autism. He's 8 1/2 yrs old, and I got early intervention for him at age 21 months and on.
Autistic kids ROCK and this show really is fantastic! I fell in love with Wyatt, especially--the boy first featured on this clip. All these kids are fantastic! I believe they're here to teach us so many things!
Thank you, HBO and the woman who put on this musical/documentary!!!
I agree. I have a son with autism and although good intention seem to be the motivation for creating such a documentary, one has to wonder who was enriched by the experience...the children are their parents.
I'm really grateful with HBO showing this program about autistic children haaving their own stories with autism, and gather as am autistic community group and do the musical performance by showing their autistic pride!
This documentary is awesome. Take the time to go to HBO site and view the whole video. It shows a rainbow of kids with various challenges of autism and how they used their gifts, talents and inspiration to create a wonderful show.
OO wow Cool.. Well im reading this one book called Rules by: Cynthia Lord and this girl's brother has autism. I think its kinda cool because at first she thinks how unnormal it is to have autism, but she soon realize's how having autism is actually not bad.
Even though its kinda of a kids book its actually great u learn a lot from it too.
=)
(sorry i just had to share that^)
&+ TRULY THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH PPL HAVING AUTISM! ITS ACTUALLY UNIQUE! =D
My issue is that this is a "call to arms". Why the hell do people keep using war like language in relation to autism? As an autistic I am highly offended by the use of this kind of language. I am not a terrorist or a rouge state. You don't need acts to "combat" me. Since autism speaks screened this film. I bet it portrays autism in a negative way. It will probably just further convince people that people with autism need to be eliminated.
You my dear, do NOT need to be eliminated. What people need to understand, is to be able to identify autism at a glance and except the person for their social behaviors. We call it a war, because it feels like a battle when our children scream and we can't help. Something is attacking them sending them off. We love our children more than anything and want others to stop judging our kids and us as being bad or they just need a good smack. We who live it, just seek the answers. Love yourself we do
I think people seperate Autism (the enemy) and their child (they love) as if autism were a kidnapper that snuck in their house and took their child from them. I have a 7 year with classic autism, you know, repetitive language, stimming etc. Do I wish he didn't have it? absolutely, i've seen his frustration due to the disorder. Like trying to get language out that he can't. I'll bet that he wishes he didn't have the disorder. But is autism an "enemy" no.
It's a process. I identified with all the stages the father spoke of in this film. My son is 10 years old, and I just realized this year, subconsciously I believed it was my job as a mother to CURE him, and that anything, ANYTHING I did that detracted from that was sealing my sons fate. I just realized..there is no cure, my son HAS autism, and I LOVE him JUST the way he IS! That was BIG, and not easy. It's a process. God bless us all.
purple, I saw and bought this movie, and I have autistic twins who are the reason I exist. This film is very Human, it allowed children from varying degrees to express life - and pain - and hopes, dreams, show joy. You & they are perfect. There is only fear in parents of children w/ autism, fear that this ugly world will be their care taker one day when we are gone. That's all. It is a fear that I can't describe. I , we are desperate to make this awful world safe for our most cherished people.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I can see that for sure. It reminds me of many autism awareness campaigns, that ultimately end up seeming (to me) overly sentimental, lacking in reason, and exploitative.
thank you, for posting this thing. i'm autist, and i hope people will understand that we are not much different than other, we are just thinking different. :D
I know someone with an autistic kid and I give them props. It takes a lot of effort, passion, and love to raise an autistic kid. I hate when other kids make fun of them because of their disability.
I really thank you from the bottom of my heart. I would love for you to send me more information about programs out there. One other thing as well. I'll be posting a video concerning a project with a program I've been working on, I would like you to take a very close look at it. Again, thank you for sharing this video with me.
i work for the Tribeca Film Festival, and last year, this film was my ABSOLUTE highlight. it is beautiful, emotional, and will lift your heart to a new level. thank you to HBO for seeing that, and sharing it with the rest of the world.
Sounds interesting..

AUTISM IS EVERYWHERE,and its scary when ppl like u shrug it off
megadobs 3 years ago
first: can u tell if a kid is autistic from when they see the kid inside of the mother through that machine, i'm sorry, words fail me right now.
second: autism just seems like it's exploded these past 2 yers. seems like every child with something "wrong" is labeled autistic. i guess it's a fad now to call any kid with retardation autistic just because it sounds better. so how many ACTUAL cases of autism are there? we may never know.
Nagira789 3 years ago
ok you are SO uninformed so before making ANY judgements or stating ANYTHING about autism you should really research a little on your own.

I saw the movie it was fuckin stupid the kids are annoying
evanezer191 3 years ago
uhhh... Are you freaking kidding me???
Are you stupid?
Can you not just be inspired by these kids who have a disability attempting to communicate with their parents or siblings..??
Seriously, your comment was so stupid I dont even know how to respond - but I will tell you this.....
Until you walk a mile in our shoes... you will never know.
Hopefully you wont have a disabled child or be disabled yourself.. although it appears you may be alittle mentally impaired already.

I certainly don't feel like I am an epidemic.
And I didn't know that more awareness about how many autistics there are in the world, fits the word epidemic.

I could not believe the ignorance in how you responded. Have you not ever had someone in your life suffer from cancer, surgery, illness? If not, I hope you do have to suffer the loss so you get a reality check!
meagmatts 3 years ago 2
have you ever considered how autistic people feel when they are considered an epidemic, cancer, or an illness? autism is neither.
please be aware that we are people too.

ur right bumsen dk, they always think that just becouse you have autism means your diffrent. Well everyone else is so how can that prove that were "diffrent"?

Even though its kinda of a kids book its actually great u learn a lot from it too.

It will probably just further convince people that people with autism need to be eliminated.
purplemutantas 4 years ago
You my dear, do NOT need to be eliminated. What people need to understand, is to be able to identify autism at a glance and except the person for their social behaviors. We call it a war, because it feels like a battle when our children scream and we can't help. Something is attacking them sending them off. We love our children more than anything and want others to stop judging our kids and us as being bad or they just need a good smack. We who live it, just seek the answers. Love yourself we do
IOImagination 4 years ago 5
I think people seperate Autism (the enemy) and their child (they love) as if autism were a kidnapper that snuck in their house and took their child from them. I have a 7 year with classic autism, you know, repetitive language, stimming etc. Do I wish he didn't have it? absolutely, i've seen his frustration due to the disorder. Like trying to get language out that he can't. I'll bet that he wishes he didn't have the disorder. But is autism an "enemy" no.
bopplayer 4 years ago 4
It's a process. I identified with all the stages the father spoke of in this film. My son is 10 years old, and I just realized this year, subconsciously I believed it was my job as a mother to CURE him, and that anything, ANYTHING I did that detracted from that was sealing my sons fate. I just realized..there is no cure, my son HAS autism, and I LOVE him JUST the way he IS! That was BIG, and not easy. It's a process. God bless us all.
monicasuetannehill 3 years ago 3
purple, I saw and bought this movie, and I have autistic twins who are the reason I exist.

I can see that for sure. It reminds me of many autism awareness campaigns, that ultimately end up seeming (to me) overly sentimental, lacking in reason, and exploitative.
