@gjtrue There's another Popeye cartoon I remember but I can't think of the name. In the cartoon, Popeye saves Olive once again and she's about to thank him with a kiss. But then Olive gets hit on the head and ends up walking off in a sleepwalking-like state, with a kissy face look on.
One other part of that cartoon I remember is that cement dumps all over Popeye and he freezes still. If you can tell me the cartoon's name, I'll be grateful
Thanks for uploading this, I used to watch this exact one when I was young. I had to search 'open says me' on Google to get the episode name. Lots of memories. I love how Popeye has his little mumbling bits, never picked them up when I watched it before. Love this.
I like the streamlined Art Deco boat that reveals itself to be a hydroplane when it takes off, with Popeye steering it from the bow like a sailor (of course). I also love the piccolo-like sound effects when the plane zigzags the globe looking for Abu Hassan and when Wimpy steals Abu's roast chickens with his chains.
This is the first time I've seen this Popeye cartoon in its entirety and digitally restored. The 3D effects, though nearly 75 yrs old, are impressive. Max Fleischer actually had those backgrounds BUILT rather than painted. They were dioramas on circular tabletops that rotated for 3D panning effect, while the cave at the opening credits and the wagon Popeye rides at the end were miniature sets and props the cels were superimposed over. Like Disney, Fleischer was a technical genius.
@JohnSilverfan01 Thanks for your reply. Max Fleischer was as much an inventor and tinkerer as he was an animator. Movie critic Leonard Maltin said that the Fleischers couldn't compete storywise with the heart and family appeal of Disney because they were New Yorkers: "urban, ethnic, a little raunchy." Walt Disney, on the other hand, was a Midwest farm boy and his cartoons reflected his conservative, small-town upbringing.
@Zorfun48 right then a jewish advocate (agitator) of one of these groups cries racism and they blame whites for reinforcing stereotypes (when it was really jews, who tend to become 'white' when it suits them).
Turner Classic Movies planned to show this as part of their "Arab Images in Cinema". They talked about it in the video segment, but skipped the cartoon. No explanation has been given.
Yes, the arabs in the cartoon are (you should pardon the term) cartoonish and negative. And it's certainly right to point that out. But not showing it at all? Wrong.

Abbo Hassen got'em anymore! LOL That was always my favorite Popeye moment out of any of them in his history.

@richartrod It was such effects like this that made the Fleischers rivals with Disney.
