I like the two versions very much, and I am aware that the lyrics version in Hvorostovskiy´s performance is the most common one. But what I can´t really get trough my poor head is the chronology in the first version. In Gedda´s version the story seems to run smoothly, but in the other version the boy goes to wait in the rye, whereupon the haggling begins before the the girl has even followed him! But since I am not a native Russian I may be missing something :-) Ayway, nice song!
Aha, so if I follow your reasoning correctly, the situation is like this: you feel that the second performance is better, but because of the unfair cooperation of the chorus you decided that you like the first one more. That's OK for me, I might only add that the Russian folk songs are usually sung or accompanied by the chorus.
@Herur22 Not at all. Gedda's performance on russian folk songs and romances is excellent, but for this song I prefer Hvorostovskiy rendition as is, although Gedda's rendtion stays excellent. The reason is slightly different lyrics.
Heard the great Nicolai Gedda perform live a half-dozen times, once, unforgettably, as Lensky... and had the privilege of meeting him once as well, and working together. What a genius!
Love Хворостовский, but, honestly, no one tops Gedda in any recording or concert performance I have heard of this song. He really, really understands it.

Gedda wins hands down. Hvorostovskiy has better voice, but Gedda's interpretation is more Russian. Gedda made me smile.

no doubt, Hvorostovsky's voice is 100 times better than Gedda's one!!!!!!

Gedda is so playful, flirtatious and versatile, and not due to balalaykas only, he sings in more folk tradition.

Oh, my crate is so full,
I've got chintz and brocade. Take pity, oh sweety, Of this lad's shoulder
I will, I will go out into the tall rye, I will wait there till the night comes, Once I see the dark-eyed lass, I will showcase all my goods.
I paid no small price myself, So don't bargain or be stingy, Bring your scarlet lips to me, Sit closer to this fine lad.
The foggy night has already come, The daring lad is awaiting, Hark, it's her! The desired one has come,

"Hey, my carrier box is brimful,
there's calico, print, and brocade.
Have mercy, my dear,
with my juvenile shoulders! I'll go to the field, where the rye grows high, and wait there till it's dark.
When I'll see the girl with the dark eyes,
I will display all my goods." Katya uses to bargain with care,
she's always afraid to pay too much.
The young man kisses the girl
and asks her to add a bit to the price.
