@mekbrown im 20 years old and I know that I am one of a few people of my generation who know real music. I can honestly say I know real music! Love the 70s funk, the 80s sound and 90s hiphop
@brownskathome ----> sorry. The group's name is Juicy. They had a hit single called "Sugar Free". You're confusing the song with Mtume's "Juicy Fruit", which was a precursor to this song. I have both songs with their correct Artist and Title in my extensive music library. Believe me, when it comes down to 80s music, I can "Name That Tune"...lol!
And Badu definitely killed it in her "Back in the Day" performance of Chappelle show . . . i love how adding this song was the best part of the performance and I didn't even know it was an actual song . . .just goes to show how "sugar" taste better with age
@LivingTheGoodLife01 I checked my music collection and sure enough you are 100% correct. I have both of the albums...yes albums lol and I mistook one for the other.
@Kamielrandolph Another thing that might be throwing you off is that the user has a picture of MTUME not Juicy. You can look up Juicy's-It Takes Two to see what they look like.
THANKS TO MY MOMMI FOR HAVING THE LATE NIGHT PARTIES PUMPIN' WHEN SHE WANTED ME TO GO TO BED BUT THE MUSIC WAS SO GOOD, I COULDNT!!! BACK IN THE DAYS WHEN US PEOPLE COULD GET ALONG! CARD GAMES, DANCE CONTESTS, ASSYMETRIC BOBS, DOORKNOCKER EARRINGS,... WHAT HAPPENED!!!????
After hoping around Youtube looking at today's "Popular' videos and their ideal Of " Music", I always Come Back to the Real thing. As far as I'm concerned, This Kind of Music never Left, many of us from the old school just forget about it and are now turning back around to rediscover what Real Music Is.
A hit record usually inspires spin-offs. The bigger the success, the more sound-alikes follow. Some of the results are wretched, but then there are cases where the spin-offs are not bad at all. Mtume's million-selling "Juicy Fruit" held the top R&B spot for eight weeks while going to number 45 pop in summer 1983. Juicy's "Sugar Free" was an obvious spin-off of "Juicy Fruit.
"The group name is obviously taken from "Juicy Fruit" and "Sugar Free" is plainly a reference to the title. Katreese Barnes' vocals shadow those of "Juicy Fruit" lead singer Tawatha. Still with all of these cops, Juicy's "Sugar Free" falls into the category of spin-off instead of being added to the list of shallow, greed-driven rip-offs. "Sugar Free" is an entertaining chill-out track.
Not having chart success equal to "Juicy Fruit," Juicy's "Sugar Free" still went gold, peaking at number 13 R&B in early 1986. The extended 12" remix was included on the 1994 CD Classic Mellow Mastercuts, Vol. 4.
I was a senior in college when this cut ws relased in 1986 [I graduated college in 1987]. It was oneof those kick-off songs at the rollr-skating rink for the skating parties that the fratenities used to throw quite often. When I came home i remained a popular kick off song for some years. WOW, those were the days.
Mtume recorded their last album around 1986. One year after Juicy released "Sugar Free". On Mtume's last album ("Theatre of the Mind") is not any sign of a "Sugar Free"-remake. I don't know where that made-up-story of a "Sugar Free"-remake by Mtume has come from. Mtume kept on producing though for other artists after 1986 (Bar-Kays / Tyrone Brunson / Tawatha Agee / etc...)
Once again, Mtume NEVER recorded or produced "Sugar Free". Brazilian producer Eumir Deodato produced Juicy's song, and Juicy themselves (brother Jerry Barnes and sister Katreese Barnes) wrote "Sugar Free". Mtume is NONE-what-so-ever related to this posted song. Mtume only re leased "Juicy Fruit", about 2 years before "Sugar Free". discogs.com/Juicy-It-Takes-Two/release/1921109
To clear up the confusion about the true artist of this song...It's Juicy. Jerry and Katreese Barnes created a group, Juicy, and they wrote and produced this song. Katreese Barnes is the lead vocal. Mtume later did a remake of the song to make maximum use of the bomb track as was ordered by the label at the time. Yes, Juicy got paid...as did Mtume. Just do your homework people. It's all on Google!
@DPhiM2010 This is precisely why people must do their own homework! There are too many credible sources even here on the internet to substantiate Mtume's career! They did the remake naive guy. It was their biggest single. It didn't get nearly as much play with the brother/sister team of Jerry and Katreese Barnes. That's why no one knows that they had anything to do with the song.. You must be really young to not have known about Mtume's involvement. Everyone thought that it was Mtume only!
Superb track!! There seems to be some confusion about the artist though. Mtume had NOTHING to do with this track. Sugar Free was done by a group called Juicy (Jerry and Katreese Barnes) and is off their 1985 album called It takes two. It was produced by Emur Deodato on the Private I label. Mtume did an album around about 1983 called Juicy which featured a track called "Juicy Fruit". Still, great selection randomhajile!
this is the beat that everyone loves it is so cool and sweet I like it so much It takes me back to the days that was real I wish that the artist will make music like this again
my favorite song by juicy back in the mid 80s. used to have this album. the song didn't get any airplay in cleveland like the song juicy fruit by mtume even though i liked this song better than the juicy fruit song. most people i know thought they the group juicy were copying off the song juicy fruit.

sorry, Brown, but the cold facts are:
1) JUICY is the artist title. Its the GROUP that sang the song.
2) You're obviously looking at the wrong album cover, like a lot of other folks.
3) I have this song (and most of JUICY'S ablum) downloaded into my extensive music library .
4) This isn't JUICY FRUIT, which is the title of a James Mtume song, which I also have in my library.
Sorry.
