  • Thank you, my daughter was a little confused.

  • @brownskathome ----> sorry. The group's name is Juicy. They had a hit single called "Sugar Free". You're confusing the song with Mtume's "Juicy Fruit", which was a precursor to this song. I have both songs with their correct Artist and Title in my extensive music library. Believe me, when it comes down to 80s music, I can "Name That Tune"...lol!

  • sorry, Brown, but the cold facts are:

    1) JUICY is the artist title. Its the GROUP that sang the song.

    2) You're obviously looking at the wrong album cover, like a lot of other folks.

    3) I have this song (and most JUICY'S ablum) downloaded into my extensive music library .

    4) This isn't JUICY FRUIT, which is the title of a James Mtume song, which I also have in my library.

    Sorry.

  • And Badu definitely killed it in her "Back in the Day" performance of Chappelle show . . . i love how adding this song was the best part of the performance and I didn't even know it was an actual song . . .just goes to show how "sugar" taste better with age

  • Comment removed

  • @Kamielrandolph Another thing that might be throwing you off is that the user has a picture of MTUME not Juicy. You can look up Juicy's-It Takes Two to see what they look like.

As far as I'm concerned, This Kind of Music never Left, many of us from the old school just forget about it and are now turning back around to rediscover what Real Music Is.

  • Juicy - It Takes Two (1985).

  • Allmusic.com :

    Composed By

    Jerry Barnes/Katreese Barnes

Song Review by Ed Hogan (part 1)

A hit record usually inspires spin-offs. The bigger the success, the more sound-alikes follow. Some of the results are wretched, but then there are cases where the spin-offs are not bad at all. Mtume's million-selling "Juicy Fruit" held the top R&B spot for eight weeks while going to number 45 pop in summer 1983. Juicy's "Sugar Free" was an obvious spin-off of "Juicy Fruit.

  • Song Review by Ed Hogan (part 2)

"The group name is obviously taken from "Juicy Fruit" and "Sugar Free" is plainly a reference to the title. Katreese Barnes' vocals shadow those of "Juicy Fruit" lead singer Tawatha. Still with all of these cops, Juicy's "Sugar Free" falls into the category of spin-off instead of being added to the list of shallow, greed-driven rip-offs. "Sugar Free" is an entertaining chill-out track.

  • Song Review by Ed Hogan (part 3)

Not having chart success equal to "Juicy Fruit," Juicy's "Sugar Free" still went gold, peaking at number 13 R&B in early 1986. The extended 12" remix was included on the 1994 CD Classic Mellow Mastercuts, Vol. 4.

  • Tune!!! Produced by Eumir Deodato.

  • young resse sugar free stayin... above water

  • top top tune this will be never matched or copied

  • I was a senior in college when this cut ws relased in 1986 [I graduated college in 1987]. It was oneof those kick-off songs at the rollr-skating rink for the skating parties that the fratenities used to throw quite often. When I came home i remained a popular kick off song for some years. WOW, those were the days.

  • i love this song the year i graduated yes

  • Is this Mtume? I thought another artist made this?

  • @willowseeker

Yeah, it's the group Juicy. Way too confusing for people because it's filed under Mtume.

  • Mtume recorded their last album around 1986. One year after Juicy released "Sugar Free". On Mtume's last album ("Theatre of the Mind") is not any sign of a "Sugar Free"-remake. I don't know where that made-up-story of a "Sugar Free"-remake by Mtume has come from. Mtume kept on producing though for other artists after 1986 (Bar-Kays / Tyrone Brunson / Tawatha Agee / etc...)

  • Once again, Mtume NEVER recorded or produced "Sugar Free". Brazilian producer Eumir Deodato produced Juicy's song, and Juicy themselves (brother Jerry Barnes and sister Katreese Barnes) wrote "Sugar Free". Mtume is NONE-what-so-ever related to this posted song. Mtume only re leased "Juicy Fruit", about 2 years before "Sugar Free". discogs.com/Juicy-It-Takes-Two/release/1921109

  • old school fools n aint no otherway

  • This is where the beat began, my brother Thank you

  • this that shit cuz

  • i love this song, but its by a group called Juicy.

  • dc cz primary coca cola week Oktober. Fat farm (disreet) CCL

  • I never knew the name of this group. I'll always remember this Jam!

  • I agree.. this song is sweet....

  • OMG Bring this Back

  • To clear up the confusion about the true artist of this song...It's Juicy. Jerry and Katreese Barnes created a group, Juicy, and they wrote and produced this song. Katreese Barnes is the lead vocal. Mtume later did a remake of the song to make maximum use of the bomb track as was ordered by the label at the time. Yes, Juicy got paid...as did Mtume. Just do your homework people. It's all on Google!

  • @perkb1 Mtume never did a remake of this song nor had anything to do with it

  • @DPhiM2010 This is precisely why people must do their own homework! There are too many credible sources even here on the internet to substantiate Mtume's career! They did the remake naive guy. It was their biggest single. It didn't get nearly as much play with the brother/sister team of Jerry and Katreese Barnes. That's why no one knows that they had anything to do with the song.. You must be really young to not have known about Mtume's involvement. Everyone thought that it was Mtume only!

  • The way music is suppose to sound

  • The baseline in this is awesome, they don't make songs like anymore. Such a shame.

  • This song takes me back to the first time I heard it, we were at a cookout in seattle washington, great time we had.

  • this shit hits hard hard baby, brooklyn babby yeah what you want ....cooooooool.

  • I love this song. I graduated high school in '86.

  • i cannoe express my grattitude 2 you sir for posting this : ) thanking u, was 13 when i hear this tune the last time

  • Superb track!! There seems to be some confusion about the artist though. Mtume had NOTHING to do with this track. Sugar Free was done by a group called Juicy (Jerry and Katreese Barnes) and is off their 1985 album called It takes two. It was produced by Emur Deodato on the Private I label. Mtume did an album around about 1983 called Juicy which featured a track called "Juicy Fruit". Still, great selection randomhajile!

  • @xrismc ------thank you!!! you are about the only one who's posted the true facts!!! Let them fools know!!!

  • The great MTUME,Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!

  • @PorknBeanJuice I'm here SIS!!!!!!!!!1

  • really like this song

  • note to OP.. this song is by JUICY not MTUME..

  • you're Right !!...it's Juicy and not Mtume

  • my favorite song by juicy back in the mid 80s. used to have this album. the song didn't get any airplay in cleveland like the song juicy fruit by mtume even though i liked this song better than the juicy fruit song. most people i know thought they the group juicy were copying off the song juicy fruit.

  • Man I dig that ol' 808 rhythm... miss my ol' toy

  • true music from ah error when ppl gave ah fuk about eachother...lol

  • the name of the group is actually MTUME they have a song called Juicy .....However this song is da bang !!!!

  • One of my fav's fo sho..AZ's "SugarHill"

was a nice . oh and devioushalflife the groups name is Mtume not Juicy that is the title of on of their songs sorry but I have the album. I repp 1972 boo.

  • AZ sample on "Suga Hill" ..i think Mtume also was a percussionist for Miles Davis in his 70's 80's days along with lengendary bassist Marcus Miller...as well as doin "Juicy Fruit", Biggie sample

  • Nice beats on this joint. Heartbeat was by Taana Gardner on West End records. Re-done by the commercially-friendly Seduction-late80s.

  • Yeah the group name is JUICY that sings this some people confuse Myume for the title song Juicy Fruit. Sorry bra.

  • who did the old school song heartbeat

  • Good question. I remember another group during the late eighties remade it. I just cannot remember who originally made it.

  • Well the group that sings this is called JUICY but some get mixed up with Mtime who sings the title song JUICY FRUIT. This is posted incorrectly.

  • Technically, the song was recorded by a group James Mtume produced. Their name, ironically, was JUICY...still love the song to this day.

  • thanks for clarifying that for me.

  • You're more than welcome...

  • @AMack118 never knew that ...thanks for the info...they dont groove them like they used to

  • @AMack118 yeah thats completely wrong. the James Mtume part was right , but the name the group is ,was and always will be, Mtume! Biggie (the notorious BIG)took this song sampled it ,and used it for his song " Juicy" on his ready to die CD

  • im very young but thank you for this song i loooooove it! being born in this age where real music is scarce i enjoy this quality of music
