  • If you look at 90s Spiderman, him battling all those baddies took his toll on him. Also the fact that he has to protect his family--Aunt May etc and mostly fight villains as good or just less than he--VENOM and Hobgoblin for ex. reveals a missing component he NOW feels a superhero team can fill or ease. This makes Bendis' decision to make Spidey Love the Avengers make a little more sense. Spidey explains his situation in the comic if you read a little more closely. MJ can console but so much.

  • Nah, don't buy it. Maybe if you had some scenes where Spidey is talking to Luke Cage or Hawkeye and actually sharing something with them, but that never happens in the book. You never see an EMOTIONAL CONNECTION between Peter and the others. In fact, then only time Peter even says how he feels about the Avengers is in the middle of the fight scene in issue #51. IMO, that's not enough for me to believe that the character feels 'at home' with the Avengers.

    That just my opinion.

    Elliott

  • As usual, your opinion is best and I know what I said was a stretch but really its only a matter of time before Osborn focuses on Spidey due their unique history. Spidey has history getting help to fight the Sinister Six in the past so the Avengers will be his hometeam unitl this thing is over and Osborne is either dead or in a looney bin. Bendis HAS to go this way because Spidey's archenemy is now in charge of the world's security. The Avengers along with his family is the only support he has.

  • Nah, you see, what you're saying actually makes sense. And lately, everything Bendis has been doing doesn't. ;-)

    Thanks for commenting!

  • MORE AND BETTER ACTION SPIDER-MAN COMICS.

all the action is still and not free flowing.

  • I will tell you that everyone I work with at my comic store LOVES this title and all things Bendis. I can also tell you that they all LOVED this issue. It continues to be one of our top sellers (like everywhere else I'm sure), but these are highly trained professional comic nerds i'm working with here.

  • I'm sorry you have to work with people who have such horrible taste in comics. My heart goes out to ya Benwonder.

I have a hard time taking anyone seriously who loves Bendis and his shite scribblings. Thank god I don't work/shop at your store.

  • lol, that's funny because almost everyone at my LCS including the owner loves NA, Red Hulk, Ultimatum (not kidding) and other such non-sense. They even give me puzzled looks when I express my distaste for these awful titles. Watching Jose and Elliott tear these books to shreds and bring them to justice is one of my only escapes from this intellectual epidemic. It gives me a sense of inner-peace and well being that is unmatched. Remember, just because something is popular doesn't mean it's good.

  • Thanks pobra. Very well said.

    Jose

  • lol, i just want spidey back to how it was towards the end of the 1st volume in the late 90's.

    the rest was meh.

  • Guys....I think that Bendis just wanted to have Jess Jones see that Spidey was Peter Parker. She always did have a crush on Parker. This was on purpose. Just look how dissapointed JJ was when Peter admitted that he would have dated her in the past. L Cage freaked. Maybe Bendis will explore this in a later series. It was funny. JJ meeitng parker was like a U2 fan meeting Bono. LOL. Also note how she Shushed hubby Cage. Hilarious!!!!

  • Bendis is a fucking asshole for unmasking Spidey in New Avengers instead of letting Slott & company do it in Amazing Spider-Man.

Oh wait, they did unmask him in Amazing this week but Bendis needed to do it first in his book so he could be "special." Fuck that shit. We will be talking abut this most definitely in next weeks segments.

    Jose

  • Oh christ don't tell me that Bendis is gonna do some lame soap opera love triangle thing with PP, JJ and Luke Cage....I may just have to hunt bendis down and kill him if that happens...

  • I think that that is EXACTLY what is going to happen in NA. Sigh...

    Jose

  • im not a fan of new avengers at the mo, but i will say i like Chris Bachalo and how he draws strange's tash. ditch Tan keep the tash

  • To be honest though, most of marvels new stuff has a lack of or poor action. Bendis just has his face scenes on top, which make it even worse.

I think Bendis is a Awesome Plot designer though. Just dont like how he puts the actual comic story delivery together.

  • BND-My Version

MJ's love for Spidey has put her in danger and will ever continue to. After a series of painful encounters by MJ and villians, Pete finds a way for Mj to forget her love for him. Peter dosnt want her in pain for him.

(doctor strange drops fairy dust on the social club-or something). yaknow..

    -then-

MJ gets back to her social life and only Peter remembers that they were ever married.

He keeps an eye on her and learns more of his responsibilities as Spider-Man.

    waddaya think?

  • bendis has too much face time with his street talk and THERE ARE NO DECENT ACTION PARTS.

only crap montages or snapshots of very simple actions.

  • and why does Doctor Strange look like Geraldo in this issue?

  • Not to defend Bendis or anything, because he is a mediocre writer, but if Quesada hadn't messed everything up in the first place, we wouldn't need Spidey to unmask AGAIN.

  • I ask this : Why follow spiderman on a monthly basis if you dont care about continuity. The very stories you are buying right now will be neglected or wiped from continuity in a very short time from now.

Marvel destroyed Spiderman period. Dont tell me continuity isnt nessesary.

You can tell great stories outside continuity just not on a monthly basis. Its a contradiction.

Current Spiderman readers- you ARE the problem.

  • can you guys do a review of the spectacular spiderman tv series? i really enjoy it and think it is alot better than reading one mroe day and brand new day.

  • BND was terrible. Spidey would never make a deal with the devil. Marvel is supposed to be the world outside our window, a place were things stick. Spiderman's reboot has killed my interest in the character, and I've been reading about Peter Parker since I learned how to read.

  • Meh. Na was okay this month. However, for its prices it needs to be stellar, maganificent, gorundbraking, not merely okay. This book is offically droped. And what worse, I could care less about who the new sorcerer supreme is. Just a big *MEH!*

  • If they're going to do a sorcerer supreme hunt then do a Doctor Strange miniseries. Don't clog up the Avengers with something thats a side issue.

Again its Bendis and his 70's nostaligia kick. Trouble is, bendis is no Steve Englehart or Roger Stern.....

  • Yeah I'd rather a mini and another writer. I dig the renewal of the 70s heroes, but Bendis is wearing thin.

  • Not only that, and I know this'll never happen considering the numbers this book puts up, but someone other than Bendis heading this title would ONLY be a boon to its quality.

  • The problem with continuity is which one to follow? If you got the chance to write on a spiderman or avengers book, would you want to have the avengers know Peter's identity, or retcon it so they don't know. Writers come along and mess things up, so writers down the road can either work with what is or mess the continuity up some more. Marvel hasn't made too many specific limits on what can be changed, or they just don't care and hope they make a profit.

  • Brand New Day has to be my least favorite Spider-Man story of all time because basically it was Marvel saying,"Fuck you fans who have followed the Spider-Man books for years and years and we're gonna do our own stuff". I wish Marvel had more respect for their older fans.

  • Posting before reading. Love the pre opener bits, but don't reference them. If you want to slowly start polishing up these video podcasts, by all means. Have no shame, fellas.

  • You guys called it completly right on this issue. Jose- yep Spidey would turn up for an issue when the avengers were in trouble. The longest stint I saw him do before was 5 issues around #314-318

I said on another vid the reasons for the NA roster is a: Bendis's 70's nostalgia kick (Powerman & Ironfist, Spiderwoman) and SALES (Wolverine and Spiderman are there by editorial directive to sell to as many fanboys as possible.

The classic Avengers were there because of STORIES not gimmicks

  • I think Ultimates proved you can have the classic lineup and make it awesome.

  • Hey, you guys realise that Bendis hasn't put out an issue of Powers in at least 6 months right? Now Powers had lots of talking heads pages but that worked within the parameters of the police procedural type comic. Cop shows like Law and Order are full of talk talk talk. And as well, Mike Avon Oeming can do talking heads really well, he is so good at drawing faces and body language....unlike neophyte Billy Tan

...btw why are there 7 artists credited on this issue and why? hmmm

  • When are they going to stop calling it "New" Avengers?

  • when there's only one avengers team i imagine...and then it'll probably be called 'The Real Avengers' ;)

  • well, since spider-man is my favorite super-hero, all i could think about this issue is... OUCH!

  • I don't think you guys are being nit-picky at all. NA is complete and utter garbage. I get the impression that Bendis thinks that he is the captain of the marvel ship and can therefor do what ever the hell he pleases. Which is bore us to death with talking heads only to decapitate one or more of said heads to generate some form of visceral entertainment to satisfy blood thirsty fan-boys, all the while ignoring any continuity or character development that has already been established. Rubbish.

  • The whole rewriting/patchwork of Spiderman continuity really brings my piss to a boil.

I'm a continuity nerd and fucking proud of it. BND took everything I learned about Spidey while I was growing up, and shit all over it.

I actually liked the idea of the public knowing who Spidey really was. I don't know why they felt they wrote themselves into a corner when they decided on BND.

  • I thought the original unmasking was a mistake but BND was a TERRIBLE way to undo it. A big magic fucking rewind button...

And regarding this unmasking....any of the longtime avengers fans remember Iron Man used to wear his uniform all the time except in his room so no one would find out he was Tony Stark. The secret identity was important to the Avengers.

You guys made me fucking read NA 51, I hate you!!! bah!

  • Uh..One More Day OMD not BND

  • Don't care :P

  • ugh i hate new Avengers so much. Bendis needs to stop this book and focus all his attention to Dark Avengers and Ultimate Spider Man and Spider Woman which are his good books. A Ms. Marvel "died" so thats 9 people that know his idenity.

  • Bendis thinks he's Kevin Smith or Quentin Tarantino. But the difference is that Smith and Tarantino's dialogue is engaging and fun to listen to, while Bendis's is annoying and childish.

  • That was me who made the observation about Gwen Stacy. I really think the whole Brand New Day thing was rushed they wanted spiderman to be be single and his Identity secret again. Frankly I feel that some writters feel they can crap on Spiderman's story because he is one of if not the most popular Marvel Hero and the fans will by into it anyway. As a long time Spiderman fan, I feel insulted and i believe other spiderman fans feel the same way.
