I know this is an old cast though its funny cause Al all of your questions were valid and explaining senseless answers on the behalf of att is not always an easy thing for reps...lol It's like now-if you were grandfathered into the $30 dollar unlimited plan and wanted to tether, you would need to drop to the $25 2 gig plan and then add an additional $20=$45 total and you're loosing the unlimited plan if you had it. MAKES NO SINCE, Though it does make $ LOL

As an employee of at&t, for a call center (not in Canada) I can say there was a lot of confusion about iPhone 3G S capabilities and features. I understood them all clearly, but some people around me had trouble adjusting to the new information. They informed us of the new iPhone only about 1-2 weeks (depending on call center location) or the release date, capabilities, and available resources to answer questions. I think this is a call that got someone that was trying to adjust.

Wow, and I thought Dell UK support was bad! I bet Apple are pissed off at the "quality" of support AT&T offer. I wouldn't be surprised if they go with another carrier with the next version if they can't get their shit together. Here in the UK O2 do an outstanding job with them. Great signal strength, fast network, full features including MMS and tethering from release day. Maybe MMS wasn't on the last version because of AT&T? Seeing how they won't have it till later in summer it'd make sense.

I mean i got a message from 02 on my iphone it said this "The new iPhone 3.0 software will be arriving on June 17th. iPhone 3G custemers like you will be able to get loads of new features including MSS messaging, tethering, faster speeds , tap to find out more"

AT&T sounds really bad, I'm glad i'm not on it. Here in the UK 02 is pretty much amazing. I average like 3-4mb/s on my iphone over 3G. when running the connection speed test

Alfred, I know you are an Apply guy, but you should look into getting an Android phone. I have wifi-tethering w/ mine. I have an app that sets my phone to act as a wireless AP. I can then browse the net over 3G, using my Vista DELL latitude 430, my Ubuntu DELL latitude 610, my wife's OS X ibook, or my Fedora Thinkpad. It's awesome, no software required on laptop, works with any hardware/OS with wifi support. Supports MAC filtering and/or WEP if you want added security.

sounds extremely similar to my phone call to AT&T in Ohio. They also said they will be charging $30 extra for tethering and were "supposedly" getting MMS support but not for a while. Probably near the end of summer.

While it sucks, I can hear AT&T and Apple's argument on the subsidizing thing. It makes sense that if you're only a year into a heavily subsidized phone's contract, then I wouldn't expect AT&T to do more subsidies unless they, of course, extended your contract's life 2 years PAST the end it would have been with your older iPhone, which would suck.

Doesn't matter anyways, the 3GS isn't worth it.

No specifics as of yet, though I'm sure MMS won't be too much of a problem. Tethering, on the other hand, will cost an extra amount. I'd imagine the cost will be something close to having a dedicated Mobile Broadband dongle with o2. Keep in mind, these are all features of the the new iPhone and OS 3.0. I'm pretty sure you'll be able to do it from release, whether the carrier will like it or not is a different matter.
