This video makes my heart race. And as a fellow 70 series Versatility owner of the AWD (XC) variety, I urge you to be very sparing in this type of driving. For the sake of the transmission. The transmission is Japanese in a 2 tonne Swedish estate and you may have to consider your car totalled. At the tune of around $4K, I keep my RPM's far below 5KRPM. Not to preach... But few sounds make my loins burn as tenderly as the growl of a sophisticated light pressure turbo. Cheers!
I have the same car but stock - the LPT versions still have high compression engines so pull max torque of 199ft/lbs from 1800rpm through to 5000rpm. This makes them faster than a T5 at the low end and feels more like a huge nasp rather than a turbo. As someone mentioned, the LPT versions are under-rated. Nice video mate - Thumbs up!!
I have the 2.4 badged B5244t3 engine and it has 200hp, Is yours an xc model? I love mine, Saving up for a good remap. Subscribe to me, I will soon be adding good quality videos of the 2.4 low pressure turbo v70 mk2.
I have one of these as well, a 1999. It's also my first car - I got a really good deal on it ($3500, in Florida of all places). It's such an awesome car - fast, reliable, convenient, great mileage, and sexy.
V'70's are good cars, yes, but my god, they are boring. If it's tuned or something like that, then it's cool, but otherwise?...Nah. It's a reliable car though. Very, safe, fast and comfortable.
The reason why i think V70's are somewhat boring is because....Well, in Sweden, EVERYONE drive one.
It tend's too get a little boring when you see the same car for over 100.865 times. :(
Although, i'am not saying it's a bad car, just that there are many cars that have more charisma.
They may be common in Sweden, but I live in New York State, where more people drive tractors on the road than V70s. So I think it stands out and people generally comment on how different it is, actually.
Well, doing this will NOT destroy the engine. There are other factores how to destroy an engine, for example switching off the engine immediately after a ride like this or by permanent passing through critical speed.
And: This is MY car, so at this time I already bought it!
Great video. I have a 1997 v70 awd 2.5 liter engine, and actually I suspected that the performance was better than the user´s manual specifications. I raced against a 180hp golf gti and there was no time it could rich me. Long life to the flying brick.
i hav a 2000 volvo v70 cross country...its got 190hp stock. its fast, but i dnt think its as fast as the car in the video. It goes to 140 mph on the speedo and i've gotten to 130. my 0-60mph is around 7.5 seconds
I have a 98' V70 AWD with a 2.5 liter engine, I clocked the zero to sixty at 6.3 ish. I say ish because my buddy was using a stopwatch and sitting in the backseat, and it was 3 am, so that measurement is probably off by a small margin. My speedometer goes to 120 MPH, and I've maxed it out, but the RPM gauge continues to rise after the speedometer maxes. Therefore I don't know how fast my max speed was.
Of course there are faster and more powerful cars, but the performance of the 2.5T outdoes, for instance, a car like the V70 T5 through lower RPM intervals.
All in all, the V70 2.5T is one of the best Volvos ever to leave the assembly line - and that means one of the best cars ever built!!
I agree, I have a 1998 T5 and a 2001 2.4T, the 2.4T has a lot more low rpm torque. It also exhibits no turbo lag. The low pressure turbo Volvos are really underated.
For those who want to know, the modern V70's (probably the '07 & '08 too) are limited to 250 Km/h or 155 Mph.
A guy that works with me has a Volvo V70 2.5T ('04 or something) but had it slightly tuned. (ECU) and his speedometer runs all the way out (260 Km/h) and about 3-4 cm more (----------) <-- this far! (org= 219Hp-333Nm = ECU-mod= ~255 Hp- 440Nm)
I went 188 km/h (202 on the speedometer) with one last week - we coldn't test the top speed because of the traffic
When testing acceleration with the speedometer - the time has to be taken to 105 to get the 0-60 mph rating and 109 to get the 0-100 km/h rating. The error is 5%+ 4 km/h in the 20-110 km/h range on the 2 (original) cars I've tested (I use to measure the speed with GPS)
I once was able to test the top speed, but only approx, because after some km there was to much traffic. On the Speedometer I reached as far as I saw it 260 km/h, on the GPS it showed 241 km/h ;)
As I wrote in some comments before: It seems that the car already had a chip tuning as I bought it: approx 225hp. So now only a chip tuning has been made and the airfilter has been changed.
i think the GLT is the 2.5 20 valve non-turbo engine with 170bhp. i know someone with such an 850. 0-60 in 8-9 seconds. i know for a fact they never had a light pressure turbo (193bhp) 850 in britain (or anywhere else for that matter) that wasnt AWD.
they did an LPT 850? i thought they only put that engine in the 850 AWD...the 850 engines...as i know it, are the 2.0 10 valve with 127 bhp, the 2.0 20 valve with 144bhp, the 2.5 10 valve with 144bhp again but with more torque, the 2.5 20 valve with 170bhp, the 2.4LPT with 193bhp (awd only), the 2.3 T5 with 225bhp, and the R with 240bhp. (btw i doubt the italys T5 is a 2.0....you'd need a hell of a turbo)
In USA GLT has 193hp. For example in Portugal the version called GLT has 225hp(2.0L), T5 has 236hp(2.3L) and R has 240(2.3L) or 250hp(2.3L). Here there´s no version called GLT with 193hp(2.5L) but with 225hp(2.0L). So that can´t be a stock USA GLT. Another example, in Italy the T5(2.0L) is the GLT(2.0L) here with 225hp
well actually the GLT isn't a T5. There are T5s here in america. The 850 came in GLT, T5 and R trim levels. The GLT apparently had somekind of tiny turbo in it, which didn't really count for insurance reasons. Figure that one out. Basically I can't feel any kind of extra push in the seat, and I don't hear any whistle so for me it doesn't count. And its not really too crappy, just slow.
The 850 GLTs didn't have turbos until 1997. They put in LPTs in that year, but left out the boost gauge. In '97 there were four engine setups, NA (850) (1668/162), LPT (850 GLT) (190/191), HPT (850 T-5) (222/221), and another HPT (850 T-5R) (240/221)
I didn´t know your car is automatic so I asked it and I don´t know very well the automatics because here in portugal we use mostly manual cars.. Ok, the car is not stock sure, something was done before you bought ;) that´s good you have increased power, but because of that be careful with the engine.. have fun ;)
Sorry, but you misunderstood me or I expressed it badly. I have a manual gear shift with 5 gears. What I wanted to say was, that there exists no Volvo V70 with manual gear shift AND 4 gears. A V70 with 4 gears is always automatic ;) And the most automatic cars I've ever seen was in the USA, otherwise the most I see are manual gears...Have fun too with your Volvo ;)
Have you ever seen a Volvo V70 with manual gear shift and only 5 gears? I've really never seen. 4 gears with autmatic and 5 gears manual - would be normal I think ;) It has 5 gears and I reach approx 105 km/h in the 2nd gear.... ;)
Despite this the image on the video is faster than the sound, so I guess is not so fast as we are seeing here, however it continues being very fast for those cars ;) cya
Yes, the image of the video is maybe not 100% on the same position like the sound, but that was a problem of the video editing software ;) But it's although fast for this big, weighty and old car ;)
217 wheel hp right? Engine hp should be like 240 or even more. But how you get that specs from a stock LPT? Are you sure nothing has been done on the car? That´s almost a T5, is impossible to be a stock. Yes I know that is a difference between the real speed and the showed speed, but that doesnt matter because your car is too faster to be a stock LPT...
Nope, wheel hp is only 162. Engine output has 209 hp and norm hp is 217 (effective). But like I said it would reach approx 225 hp.
I've never said that nothing has been done, but I've bought this car as an original LPT with 193 hp, but like I said, I couldn't believe it. So I made the test: And like you see, the car has more hp as the original. So I think a (little) chip tuning has certainly been done.
That has to be 217 wheel horsepower. There is no way in hell it could do 0-100 in 6.5 seconds with only 217 hp in the engine. Just compare it to a T5!
After this they nor checked the speed indicator. At 100 km/h the car reaches effective 94.5 km/h. So if we in this case assume, that the output of the speed indicator and the effective speed would be linear (but it isn't), I would reach 100 km/h (effective) with 105.8 km/h (at the speed indicator). So I think approx 6,5s (or a bit less) for 0 -- 100 km/h is quite possible...hmm...wow ;)
I'm amazed too now *lol* But I was alone and had not a lot of fuel...
Hey akickpt, you're right ;) I've not believed it too, because the acceleration was for me a bit to fast for 193 hp. So I checked the engine in a test center.
Here are the results:
217 hp
306 Nm @ 4320 RPM
But as I made the vid the air condition was off, but at the test center she was on. Which means that the car has maybe about 5-7 hp more...and with the K & N airfilter an the deeper outside temperature as at the test center... I would say 225hp are quite possible ;)
Read the comments: There must have been done a (little) chip tuning...and the airfilter is good for a better acceleration, but you'll not have much more hp...
I think its not downhill because when he are filming the road we can count the secs by the noise of the engine.. the second gear goes to 110kmh and I can see that it goes in +- 7 secs.. so to 100 goes about 6secs as I said before. I don´t believe this is a stock LPT with 193hp.
This car can´t be a stock LPT dude!! I´m sure of that because I have a S70 T5(236hp) and in this movie you are doing 0-100km(62mph) in 6 secs. A T5 can do it in 6.5secs +-
dude, two things, check out my V70XC. got the same engine but slightly more powerfull. but the AWD system adds wieght, so its barely faster. and secondly, add some more videos of your volvo, its great! =)
that is a great choice for first car. amazing sound...not quite captured on video but i know what it sounds like :p. 0-60mph in about 8 seconds right?
i drived V70 2.4TD! max speed 235km/h it was amazing!I love this car, nice inside design and outside kit..love it!

The car has 4 gears right? A normal one can reach 90km in 2º gear without pass the red line and you can reach 110..

That's KPH, not MPH. I think 100KPH is like 60MPH.

The LPT 2.4 is 193bhp.

Correct me if I'm wrong ;)

Hey akickpt, you're right ;) I've not believed it too, because the acceleration was for me a bit to fast for 193 hp. So I checked the engine in a test center.
Here are the results:
217 hp
306 Nm @ 4320 RPM
But as I made the vid the air condition was off, but at the test center she was on. Which means that the car has maybe about 5-7 hp more...and with the K & N airfilter an the deeper outside temperature as at the test center... I would say 225hp are quite possible ;)

225 hp with K & N filter? :S Dunno about that!! We have an K & N filter In out V70 2,5T...and not 225hp in it!

Read the comments: There must have been done a (little) chip tuning...and the airfilter is good for a better acceleration, but you'll not have much more hp...
ezinzok 4 years ago
ohhh, sorry then :P then i'm with you..with chip Stage 1 (Autotech) think you get about 234hp :)

I think its not downhill because when he are filming the road we can count the secs by the noise of the engine.. the second gear goes to 110kmh and I can see that it goes in +- 7 secs.. so to 100 goes about 6secs as I said before. I don´t believe this is a stock LPT with 193hp.
akickpt 5 years ago
maybe its downhill. doesnt sound like its got a turbo psi increase, or a ecu, or an exhaust system. S70 T5...great car there mate.
majorgeneralmckay 5 years ago
This car can´t be a stock LPT dude!! I´m sure of that because I have a S70 T5(236hp) and in this movie you are doing 0-100km(62mph) in 6 secs. A T5 can do it in 6.5secs +-

dude, two things, check out my V70XC. got the same engine but slightly more powerfull. but the AWD system adds wieght, so its barely faster. and secondly, add some more videos of your volvo, its great! =)

I've checked it out and replied ;)
ezinzok 5 years ago
that is a great choice for first car. amazing sound...not quite captured on video but i know what it sounds like :p. 0-60mph in about 8 seconds right?
majorgeneralmckay 5 years ago
Thanks for your entry...oh yes, it sounds amazing ;) I've never stopped the time, but you are right, it should be 8s from 0-60 mph.
