You can convert your hybrid with a simpler and cheaper Li-ion PHEV conversion kit by Enginer under $2000. It is available on Ebay. Search by keyword, phev.
Its cheaper to take over Saudi Arabia then making everything a plug in hybrid and then we wont need stupid fuel efficiency laws or hybrids. We can have our lives back again because we will never run out of oil. Soldiers need jobs. If we get off oil the military will be unemployed.
It need not be high. Toyota could remove the routines that stop you from adding batteries, and Toyota has superior NiMH batteries that it could include for no more than an estimated $2000 extra.
Unfortunately, Chevron's cobasys unit won a lawsuit against Toyota, so they may not be able to do so until Chevron's patent rights run out, in 2014.
Cost prohibitive! The cost to make this electric modification to a Prius is as much as the original sticker price of the vehicle. That eliminates 99% of the general population and therefore is a "pie in the sky" fix to the high costs of energy. Unless the manufacturer comes onboard by mass producing these cars, the average person simply cannot afford one.
Sadly USA drivers ignorant of modern diesel tech. Only ONE % of USA cars run diesel. If 30% diesels then USA would use far less imported oil - in fact equivalent to all imports from Saudi Arabia! Prius is not a real world solution. Only of benefit on short trips/low speed.
Anything >40 mph and a hybrid uses >fuel and pollutes >global warming gases than modern diesel. Reason? Extra weight: batteries+motors to drag around. Audi A2 1.2TDI can run biofuel but with normal diesel puts out 81g/km CO2 and 66MPG at average 91MPH on Autobahn! Normal driving A2 gets 100MPG. Prius weighs 1.3T, A2 0.9 T
First of all the A2 is as big as my sons rollerblade..not to compare with a prius. How do you want to fit a family in that toycar? Second its not only abot co2. its also about respirable dust. Third... prius is the first step to something new....The full electric car. How are ya gonna drive your diesel traktor without any oil in couple of years.
The prius is a dorky looking car as well, now something like the electric wrx that mazda is working on, nice, or the tesla and their plans, excellent stuff happening.
if the usa hadnt been turned into a parking lot we could get around fine without mandatory automobile dependency. the idea of human scale cities is esoteric knowledge
Oh boy, have you guys seen the news lately? "Gas could go as low as $2.15, now is the time to buy an S.U.V." I would rather shoot my foot off than go on air telling the entire country to purchase SUV's. I wonder who is behind that segment.. Not that I am against SUV's, but people who wouldn'thave bought one to begin with now might.
Actually, conversions are quite a bit cheaper to operate than any gas-powered car if done right. You just need to take proper care of the batteries so that they get their advertised life. If you do so, a pure electric could save you thousands of dollars over operating a gasoline-powered car, even counting periodic battery replacement.
It also goes without saying that it depends on what you buy. If you drive a car with a small battery pack sized for short range, it will be difficult to save money due to frequently deep discharging it. If you have a large battery pack to where you can keep the percent discharge down to around 30% for your commute, use battery regulation, and a charger tailored to your pack's needs, the pack will last a reasonable life and you can save money.
Bravo. Lets keep this going forward. The Electric Car created, then recalled and destroyed by GM could have gone 300 miles on a nightly charge with today's batteries, which continue to improve. Let's pray the Elite Powers are thwarted in keeping solutions out of the hand of consumers, as they hitherto have done with great success. Great stuff CalCar.org

toyota is going to release a plugin hybrid. they took the UC Davis's hybrid plugin car and researched it.
Toyota also left empty spots next to the battery. Almost as if they planned that this would happen.

I wonder how long it will take Toyota to offer this option themselves? Hopefully they are smart enough to get in on the ground floor!

Who cares if imported oil is foreign from the Middle East? Free trade is good for the economy.
