I think science shouldn't be used as much to make things we can do easy, as it should be used to make things we CAN'T do, possible. (No that's not a quote I stole from somebody, I, Ed Halliday, just came up with that while watching these videos. I rule balls.)
I work at the studio where these objects were built, and on behalf of the team I just wanted to say thanks for your comments . The work featured here will continue to be exhibited, the Plane Tracker is being featured in Wired NextFest.
To see more films of the studio's work, along with additional documentation Google Interaction Research Studio and see thecurioushome YouTube channel.
Totally stupid idea. Why would you need a useless piece of junk like that cluttering up your house? The novelty would wear off in 23 seconds and you just realised you spent $ on a rather ugly and worthless piece of clutter.
In 1981 Bill Gates said "Nobody will ever need more than 640k RAM". I'm sure you know how much RAM the average house hold PC uses now.
This is an innovation. New concepts and ideas emerge everyday. Some are immediately useful and some are not but they are used to build other applications in different projects.
I think this application is great. The first reaction for the average consumer or average techie is to reject a clever idea.
As much as I dislike his marketing tactics, Bill Gates NEVER said anything of the sort. 640K was a limitation in the Q-DOS package that he scurrilously purchased and relabeled as MS-DOS.
Almost any major marketing study of technology adoption will show that the Early Adopter rejection of innovation spells doom for product unless growth can be funded long enough for it to gain traction with the "average" consumer base. Television was a very notable example of this; Automobiles, another.
