  • Got to meet Lovell last year. I was there for the launches of both Apollo 8 and Apollo 13. I told him that every other time I have gotten close him, he'd made his escape on a Saturn V! I was hoping he had one in the parking lot...but no such luck. Sigh.

  • If I ever got this award, Tom Hanks speaking at it would be my absolute highlight.

  • THE COMMANDER OF APOLLO 13. Enough said.

  • Love the movie. Love Tom Hanks. But only one of those guys shit their pants in real life.

    We'll never know which one....

  • @grl8862 If I was cruising though space at 40,000 km/h inside a tiny pod 384,000 km away from earth and then going through what they did (explosion, power loss, heat loss, computer loss, etc)

I would've been the first guy to soil my spacesuit. "Houston I have a problem"

  • As the Brits say, Hanks is CHUFFED.

  • I really love Tom's face expression at the beginning. You can tell he was honored that someone like Jim Lovell.

  • must be kinda stressful playing a real life person and portraying a very traumatic incident they went through

  • richie cunningham is sooooooooooo bald.

  • @andrelebaron

    Balok is balder!

But first, the trania. I hope you relish it as much as I.

  • i love it how tom hanks was like oh my God.. :O

  • "Zowie!!"

  • Not even 13 seconds into this and you can tell by Tom Hanks expression how honored he was by this. Tom Hanks isn't only an actor, and some might not know this... but he has always been interested in space and astronomy and by Tom's expression, that clearly tells it all about the tress in the foralldldj bye

  • @jketchamify He mouths "Oh My God!" at 0:06! And you can see the honest respect they have for each other.

  • @jketchamify also of all the other ones who appeared, this is the only one who Tom stands and salutes. That I have seen.

  • Gary Sinise at 0:53!!!

  • Damn youtube and its stupid capitalist ads

  • JIm Lovell is badass. With the ending of the space shuttle program, we are killing history of people like Jim and others who have wlaked in that path. It is not like changing a flat tire on an abandoned highway in 114 degrees heat with no water. The crew was stuck in true no man's land: space. Kudos to the courage and quick thinking of the A13 crew. Tom Hank's performance made it easier for a younger generation like myself to understand the risks. I personally would have crapped in my pants.

  • @arodspecialist Could not agree more. I don't think we could build a Saturn V today if we wanted to, and that's a damn shame. And as for the men, what can I say? Just magnificent, brave and cool under almost unbelievable pressure.

  • @bdrasin Agreed in return. Being Chinese, I am proud of what my native land of China has done, and that is a complete 360 away from crazy Mao Doctrines and being able to progress in 30 years and place a man in space of their own as well as opening up. China was never Democratic to begin with, but they have unified in a way which as a Chinese American, I feel we have lost. Companies are not doing what JFK have asked and have followed greed into shipping 850K jobs abroad. We need that back.

  • Where's Bill Paxton's AFI Award?

  • When I heard the words "The commander of Apollo 13", a chill ran down my spine.

  • Looks like Rita Wilson had no idea who the commander of Apollo 13 was until she heard the name Jim Lovell, and thats when she got excited and looked at Tom Hanks. Just observe it.

  • FYI...the lady at 26 seconds is Marilyn Lovell......who has been side-by-side with Jim since 1946

  • @NASAvsPETE Sad he never landed but twice on different occasions he orbited the moon, but no substitute i suppose. He is a great man.

  • @TennisUK11 Still a huge and rare accomplishment. How many people can say that they were lucky enough to go into space, let alone orbiting the moon.

  • and the woman behind does the same its amazing how much respect tom has for this man stands up and salutes him tom really is one of the best actors his acting in saving private Ryan was second to none well done tom ;-)

  • you can see tom mouth 'oh my god'

  • even Tom said.. "Jim said "Zowee"... love it

  • 3 people should stop using the internet

  • Tom... what a guy

  • the guy who talks is like more star then the stars

  • Tom Hanks star struck by the tribute from Jim Lovell... Jim Lovell happily telling about how he got the privilege to be played by Tom Hanks. I think my humility meter just blew a fuse. :)

  • Thats a very nice speech, very well worded

  • Tom is really true pride of USA.

  • lol a 5 minute flight becomes and hour and a half. Just proves how highly Lovell thinks of Hanks.

  • When Jim Lovell enters a place, actors, actresses, directors, producers and all the bunch of oscar winners must rise to him.

    Period.

  • @caravaggio31 It proves what kind of a man Tom Hanks is. The only one who stands up...

  • @caravaggio31 Well that kinda did happen...cause Tom Hanks is all of those exept actress!

  • @caravaggio31 Hanks did, EVERYONE should have. What a guy.

  • @caravaggio31 Exactley right! We live in an age where mediocre average talentless people can appear in a reality program & become supstars or like David Beckham be described as a genius for kicking a ball. We've lost sight that truely exceptional people like Jim Lovell exhist, a jet pilot, qualified helicopter pilot, degree in mechanical engineering qualifications in geology & medicine. Trouble is because we're now so used talentless wannabes we find it hard to believe exceptional people exhist!

  • who the hell disliked this?!!

  • Why is Tom the only one who stands ffs?

  • @tyruk he stands because he played jim lovell in the movie apollo 13

  • @bugoutbag2012

Are you retarded? I know that. What I wanted to know was why didn't anyone else stand out of respect for this great American hero? Wow. Fail on your part.

  • @tyruk because the others are rich and ignorant

  • @tyruk Because during that night, the standing ovation is reserved for the recipient. It's *his* (or hers) night.

  • @elviracage I guess they get to fly their own planes around and get to be the highlight of American history.

  • Lovell is quite a talented public speaker. That's what a real American hero looks like.

  • Tom got to live a moment there that he has probably had since he was a kid... *wipes a tear*

  • tom has done amazing work. to me he is the jimmy stewart of my generation he performs normal people like jimmy used.

but the greatest thing he did was bring band of brothers to the public.

  • omg, I so got tears when he walked out.

  • why didnt rest of them stand up ,. the real hero s are guys who actually took part ie jim lovell not the bloody actors ,.real people are the hero s not film stars they act jus one big act ,.jim lovell actually was ther n lived to tell the tale ONE BIG HERO !

  • I wouldn't be able to even whisper 'Oh my god'. I would've fainted.

  • Capt. Jim Lovell spoke at our Natural History Museum, and the intelligence of that man just streamed off of him like water. He was so smart, so aware of everybody in the room, and so magnetic.

Our cheap city refused to pay to bring along his wife, you could see that made him sad.

He mentioned it in his talk; that she was his first assistant, and part of his team, but unpaid and therefore uncredited.

  • everybody here say Jim Lovell is american hero...I think he is world hero and one of my biggest role model along with Gene Kranz

  • @victor1290 I agree. I also add to that list two of my favourites Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan.

  • "OH MY GOD" would have been my words too. James Lovell is one of my heros.

  • All of them should have given Captain Lovell a standing ovation. This man is a real life hero.

  • Jim, you are truly amazing!

  • JIM YOU ARE MY HERO!

  • @osku95 lucky you!!!

  • true hero

  • I've looked through some of these AFI's about Tom Hanks now and noticed something.

They show Ron Howard at least once in almost every damn clip. He looks pretty funny though so maybe that's why.

  • 0:06 You can see Tom mouthing Oh My God, and why shouldn’t he?

  • Mutual respect and admiration from two legends....truly emotional stuff..

  • Who wouldn't like this!

  • Zowie!

  • very, very nice tribute :)

  • I love how they salute each other! Truly a magical moment!

  • This man acutaly been out side of earth !

  • The man is being honored by the Commander of Apollo 13!

  • tom: ohh my gooooooood

  • Jim Lovell represents the impossibility to possibility.

  • "...to be on Earth again..."

  • At least Tom showed the proper respect, Capt Lovell is not just an American hero the man is a living legend.

  • This man has flown to the moon, twice! I would be honored to meet him someday if I ever get lucky.

  • If only the awesome Jim Lovell got to walk on the moon...the fact he didn't get to NEVER will diminish his dedication as a terrific astronaut

  • @MrBullhounds LOL - very funny

  • Old actors new actors.

  • 0:20 is the only time i have ever cried from youtube

  • @maxjr4 wow, same for me! i love jim lovell!!!

  • all the right stuff!!!! 4 sure!

  • i don't know who's more excited - tom at seeing one of his heroes or jim at being at a hollywood dinner for a movie star

  • memorable

  • I got to STAND UP to salute Capt. Jim Lovell in 2009 at the Texas Film Festival, when he and Ron Howard presented a commemorative screening of the movie "Apollo 13". It was such an honor to see this American Hero!!!

  • Beautiful video. Captain Jim Lovell is a hero, and you can see how honored Tom Hanks feels. Good music too ! It fits so well the moment, especially when Mr Hanks stands up !

  • @northernrhone your a fucking idiot, what your saying is "ALL ACTORS ARE RETARDS BECUASE THEY PLAY PEOPLE IN MOVIES" lets get rid of movies then right?

  • jim lovell is my cousin from mah moms side her name was pam lovell before she got married

  • @ northernrhone

just because Tom Hnaks never went to space it doesn't mean you are right. Are you turned down on any casting and now you poure your poison? Luckily TH will never hear about you. Don't try to answer this. You are pathetic and I will ignore any answer from you!

  • Are you Tom Hanks brother in law? How do you know this, that he's a supposed real cock who doesn't give a shit about anything?

  • @northernrhone.

Tom Hanks is an avid Space fanatic. Be quite,

He knows the serial numbers of the Titan II rockets and the PLIS backpacks used on Apollo.

  • wow... him and the 2 men of easy company... i cnat imagine the emotions ... :

  • How cool is it that Tom Hanks can be starstruck?

  • i always loved tom's reaction when babe and wild bill came out, but this was just priceless...he must be such a nice guy.

  • I love Tom's reaction when Jim Lovell comes to the stage.

  • xD hes happy like a kid xD

  • Ah ah ah, musn't be jealous because Hanks has more talent in his toenails than you will ever know in your lifetime. Sometimes it is better to keep your mouth shut and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.

  • totally love how how amazed tom is, love that guy

  • Because Tom Hanks has done a lot to bring attention to these people.

  • get a life

  • the salute between the two of them is awesome!

  • lovel and hanks the best

  • I respect those two men so much! Thanks for uploading!

  • This is awesome :)

  • At 0:25, is this lady Marilyn Lovell?

  • that is right. that lady is the real Marilyn Lovell. have you heard the couple's audiocommentary on the Apollo 13 DVD? they are cute. a hero and his wife, yeah.

  • Marilyn Lovell is so sweet. she easily breaks down to tears when it comes to his husband. man...that couple made history together.

and of course Tom made filmhistory by portraying Jim Lovell.

    thank you Tom and Jim!

  • 20 astronaut hereos will be at the Kennedy Space center Nov 6-9, 2009 for the Astronaut Scholarship Fund.

  • @apollowoman

Thankfully they do that every year. Keep an eye open for things from the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation. This weekend they are having a dinner in honor of Apollo 14's launch. Ed Mitchell and many other astronauts will be there. Its quite expensive but fortunately a friend of mine bought tickets for us to go. Its a once in a lifetime chance that I will truly cherish.

  • Wow!!!, Mr James Lovell, a real hero!!!!. Tom you're the BEST, a BIG actor, bravisimo.

  • I cried just seeing Toms reaction.

    What a guy.

  • Thanks to Tom Hanks for bringing the Apollo 13 story to the world on the big screen. And thanks for Jim Lovell for being a real hero!

  • I'm crying!

  • The Commander of Apollo 13. A living legend.

  • Oh my god, I nearly broke down in tears at this, you could just see how totally amazed and honored Tom looked. Of course. I might just over-emotional, but that really was amazing, and when Tom stood up.... ^^

  • he was definitely shocked and so thrilled to see a hero of his being excited to present him with an award

  • @mkmwrite yes you could see the shock of surprise happiness, and honor that Tom felt at seeing Jim Lovell on the stage.

  • Tom was amazed you could tell he said "O my god" when they announced Jim Lovell.

  • At least Hanks stood up.

  • Because Tom Hanks is in love with the Space Program. He even said he wanted to be an Astronaut but 'didn't have the math'.

  • Hanks is a big fan of the space program. Jim Lovell is one of his heroes.

  • All these people are SO LUCKY to be in america to meet my favorite superheros.. I really wish to meet him.

  • @Frye666 Yes I agree Jim Fred, and Jack as well as mission Control brought the spacecraft with the crew safely back to earth.

  • @Frye666 you are 100% correct. These people have no respect.

  • @Frye666 I know, but was the night of Tom.
