Alan Ladd's version of Gatsby is much better than Redford's. It is an actual pleasure to watch him act this role. Thank you so much for posting this vid. I actually do not like the novel and feel Fitzgerald is overrated as a novelist but Ladd's portrayal is a joy.
This was much more enjoyable that I expected but I like the1974 version better. You would think that just 20 years after the "Roaring Twenties" they could have gotten the ladies hairstyles correct; where were the shingle cuts and bobs, not to mention the cloche hats? Another anachronism was the presence of two Duesenberg Murphy roadsters. Sure, those kind of people had them but the Model J was introduced in December 1928, after Gatsby's death. Those cavils aside, the acting was fine. Bravo.
Thanks very much for posting. This took a lot of liberty with the book to be expedient. I liked that it expanded on Dan Cody, although attraction of Gatsby to Cody's wife is very odd. Acting is poor in some scenes. Daisy and Tom as shown too decent in the end. And the ending is pretty weak, showing Jordan at the funeral ending there, with no reference to the strong ending in the book "so we beat on". A difficult book to make into a movie, the book is just too great. Ladd is great though.
Heavens to Calvin Coolidge! THANKS for posting all of this rarely seen flick. I've read the original novel a few times & seen parts of the 1976 remake, but before now have never had the chance to see this late 40's version. THANKS so much for posting it! CHEERS! :-)
