@djerwulfe "doch" is really tricky. I've been discussing it with a few friends by now but we never came up with a satisfactory answer (note: I'm German). I think, most important is it doesn't really mean yes or no, it can be substituted by those. It's more like "you are wrong" or pointing out a contrary... Eh, something along those lines XP

@djerwulfe "doch" is a tricky word. Your thoughts are quite right, doch can me 'yes', as in "Doch! Ich hab es gesehen!" ("Indeed! I have seen it!") or 'but' as in "Doch es war zu spät." ("But it was too late"). Occasionally, it can mean 'still' too, as in "Und er versuchte es doch!" (And he still tried it!"). JFK said "ich bin ein Berliner", which was hilarious, because he basically said "I am a jelly donut". He should said "Ich bin Berliner". Thanks for your comment :)

@tayana801 If you really want to learn any language, do it the hard way. Take a song in the language (Rammstein, Tokio Hotel, die Ärzte etc for German) and translate every single word with a dictionary and try to make usefull sentences out of the mess afterwards. That will be tedious and annoying but that's how I learned English and I think it worked ;)

I've never heard anyone say "I am a Briton" (Ich bin ein Englander is what I would always say.)

Britons is really only a word used on the news ("three Britons were among the injured etc")

@ryko26 I have used it before and the addressed british people were fine with it ;) Of course, it's everyone's own choice what to say (but your example of "ich bin Engländer" is the exact translation of "I am a Briton"), if you want to say "I am british", that would be "Ich bin britisch/englisch" (the latter being confusing to Germans). You heard right. I'm originally from Berlin, the capital but my parents are from Saxony, with a very strong accent. The most confusing accent might be found in Bavaria (the south).

But I grew up with "High German" which is basically accentfree. It's comparable with "Queen's English" for the Brits.

Well, we just don't do that :P when a german says "ein Amerikaner" he only means a USA citizien, and people from Mexico are therefore mexicans :P if you are "half/half",usually, you would go for the country you feel home in - so if it's Mexico, you might wanna say "ich bin Mexikaner mit amerikanischem Hintergrund" (i'm mexican with an american background)or the other way around "ich bin Amerikaner mit mexikanischem Hintergrund" (i'm american with a mexican background)
