The fact is that reading Orbach's book did something for me. I felt it understood me, and was able to ignore any parts that got too extremist, so it was and has stayed incredibly useful to my understanding of my place in the world.
This is a book by women and for women, but it is also by certain women and for certain women (certain italicized). It worked for me- read it, if it works for you it can be a great gift, and if it doesn't you can ignore it, that's all.
As a woman who had anorexia nervosa (AN) for many years I must emphasise that I have NEVER identified with Orbach's feminist theories about culture, media, pressures on girls/women to look a certain way etc. Although I do think that culture and environment plays a role in the development of 'newer' eating disorders, AN has been around for centuries. From personal experience I view AN as a brain illness. Compulsive behaviours play a much greater role in AN than body dissatisfaction.
i truly admire Orbach and Im a huge fan of her work! Feminism has brought a great deal of change in our time and has given voice to women in many asects of their lives!
I don't know if you can only blame magazine editors for fetishising skinny models when fashion designers specifically create clothing for their runway shows which are no bigger than a size zero. They will then have to turn down any models who are bigger than a size zero, and the aesthetic is promoted again. It's also not uncommon to hear designers saying that clothes simply look better on a size zero. The whole fashion industry is obsessed with skinny.

Hadley Freeman is a vacuous idiot, devoid of any talent or the ability to produce anything remotely interesting, pompous waste of atoms.
