@BusinessKi11ER those people have no idea then, ive seen the f-35 when i did my pilot selection for the ADF and it is a very good aircraft. People always complain that it doesnt have range or capacity of other aircraft, but thats not what its for...its a stealth fighter not a multi-role fighter, we have f-18 super hornet for our bomb runs, and besides it can take off vertically...which is what appealed to us in the first place.

@antzz1077 doing my pilot selection next year mate. Unfortunately Aussies aren't going to get the VTOL versions, as we have no carriers. But these things can really pack a punch with their payloads. Apparently pilots have a special way of breathing to make sure they don't pass out. Hopefully I'll get to fly one of these badboys.

They are Contrails they are called, all they are is basically cloud being formed behind an aircraft due to the hot exhaust of its engines mixing with the freezing air at high altitudes.

F35's or not it doesn't really make Australia safer, as the only creditable air threats in the region is the IAF, which are far inferior as compare to RAAF (If we're not attacking).

We're debating rather or not we should buy 100 F35's.. yet we failed to maintain 60 F-18 combat pilots in RAAF at any one time.

100 planes + maintains + equipment & training on the F35's which we don't really need.. money can be better spent elsewhere..

Seems to be a lot of comment about the F-35 here, so I wanted to add my two cents. Remember why LM designed the F-35: to replace the F-16 and HARRIER, both of which are light fighters. The F/A-18 is a different beast. I can't understand why we are replacing a multirole A/C with a downsized fleet of smaller, more specialized A/C. A/C we are helping to build but the Yanks insist on keeping secrets about.

If anyone can inform my opinion further, please do.

You all seem to be forgetting the fact that Indonesia has only 2 Su-30s and 2 Su-27s in total. That's 4 planes, plus 10 F-16s. That's hardly an air force. Even if a Su-30 is better than an F-35 (Which it's not), they would still be vastly outnumbered.

Even with the current F/A-18s, we have about 70 of those, and they are on par with F-16s, of which Indonesia has only 10.

Plus, I am not sure, but do Indonesia's current Su-30s have any weapons?, I remember reading that somewhere.

To be perfectly honest with you guys. I live in Australia and I don't think we are all that concerned about anyone attacking us. We are so far away from the rest of the world it is almost pointless coming all the way down here anyway. Also our biggest threat ( if you could call them that ) is Indonesia and they couldn't take us on, they have no money. Though I know we not all that strong in numbers our defence force are very capable and well trained. Plus we have America so we sleep soundly.

Russian jets are good I must say, but stealth seems to be a big factor in modern air combat at the moment, and the only country that can provide us with those stealth capabilities at this moment is America. And although the F-18's are getting old, they are still fully capable of defending Australia's airspace for another few years. (Australia is planning to replace the F-18 with the American built F-35, capable of stealth.)

Australia is only buying the F-35 which is far less advaced than the F-22 or the Sukhoi 30 MK super flanker which the indonesians own and operate sucessfully. the F-18 or the F-35 won't give the australian air force air superiority in the region maybe in the 60s but not anymore.

who told you the F-35 is FAR less advanced than the SU-30MK? The AESA radar on the F-35 is a full generation ahead of the SU-30MK. The BVR kill ratio would 110% in the F-35 favour. The rest of the avionics and 'net centric' gear on the F-35 is far greater than the SU-35 buddy. NOT TO MENTION THE F-35 IS A STEALTH AIRCRAFT. Thats the difference between a 4th and a 5th generation fighter. Better read your books pal.
