If you take the tongue out of the roof bracket and slide it into the top bracket slot and nail it with 16 common spikes you will have plenty of space above the slate and the heads will not hit slate above.If slates are larger then cut a "V"notch at top and drop top of tongue into notch.If you can't figure it out call me and I will explain it very slowly .
why don't you use the top 3 slots on the brackets? it will put the jack low enough to slate that empy slot and just pull the jacks out when you're finished slating the field and not have to use a slate hook on a new installation. input on that?

We don't like to leave nail heads underneath the slates because they can wear a hole in the overlying slate over time.
