The true California Zephyr ran by way of Niles Canyon and the Valley then over the Keddie Wye through the Feather River Canyon. Otherwise very beautiful.
I've ridden this, we rode on te Grand Canyon railroad from William AZ to the Grand Canyon and thats the locomotive they've used to pull our trains, they've used 2 of them.
Great video! We took the California Zephyr and then the Cardinal to Baltimore and back to the west coast. Unfortunately, I only had a digital still camera to capture video of the trip but I have the videos on my channel if you want to take a look. Next to driving across the country, Amtrak is the very best way to see America.
Rode the cal zephyr while trying to hear broadcasts of nasa landing on the moon the first time, as the train wound through snake river canyon. You could almost reach out and touch the train as it curled back... amazing hazy memories.
@PINKluvr01 Is it true that you wouldn't know if a bus was up you until the passengers started getting off? Which, I might add, would be about the same time you would!!
yeah, GE is junk. they used to look okay, but ever since the AC6000 theres been no variation in their engines appearance wise. i wish that EMD was still the king....
I rode the original California Zephyr as an 11 year old boy in 1960. My sister was a Zephyrette, and she "snuck" me on board for one of her trips from Chicago to SF (Emeryville) and back.
I did not realize that I was a "stowaway" until just a couple years ago, when I asked her who paid my way, my parents or she. She said no one paid my way; she just took me with her after her crew mates told her that she ought to do it.
I would love to hear from others who rode the original CZ.
They use two locomotives from California to Denver (they remove or add one in denver, depending on which way they are going) because they need the extra power to get through the rockies.
The original CZ was inaugurated March 19, 1949 and ended in 1970, a year before Amtrak. The name was held by the DRGW (they renamed the train the Rio Grande Zephyr but kept the original name) until 1983 when it turned over to Amtrak and renamed the CZ. It still runs today as an Amtrak train from Chicago to Oakland, same as the original CZ. See the whole story in the Wikipedia.
because in 1983 it was rerouted over the former City San Francisco route after the San Francsico Zephyr was discontinued after DR&W finally gave up on passenger service.
Beautifully old train and loco. Why can't they build rolling works of art like that any more? It sure does look goofy with the modern amtrack cars and loco's in there though.
That's my M5, and it still sounds good. Once in a while I get to put it on a capitol between OAK and SAC. I've got a friend with a vid of it from last year, I'll see if he can post it here. BTW, that trip sure was fun to work.
I enjoyed the video, and seeing the old orange and silver Western Pacific locomotive and the original Calfornia Zephyr cars brought back fond memories of my trip as a "stowaway" on the Zephyr in 1960, when I was just eleven years old. My sister, who was thirteen years older than I, was a Zephyrette, and she got an "unofficial" approval to let me take a trip with her from Chicago to San Francisco and back.
trip folks wanted it.

The only difference now is the route.
The origional California Zephyr ran up the Feather River Canyon, today it climbs over Donnor Pass.
But I don't get why it dosen't run up the Feather River Canyon any more.

salemcripple 3 years ago
so why did they have to use the 2 additional amtrak locos?
cdubois13 4 years ago
maybe because since its an old diesel with 1,500hp the extra locos would help it with the heavy superliner cars

That was a Nathan M-5 Tony, a friend of mine voiced/restored it for the owner who let the M-5 be mounted for this trip.

So good to see that the engineer was a down to earth gentleman. Enjoys his job and takes pride in it.
That Nathan horn (M3?) sounds sweet and mellow.
