  • trip folks wanted it.

  • why extra power 4 the FP9?

  • i appreciate your comment . she's a real beauty, aging well, too.

  • Very nice video - shot just the way I'd shoot it, with nice touches of scenery and a good look at Truckee rolling past . . . thanks!

  • The true California Zephyr ran by way of Niles Canyon and the Valley then over the Keddie Wye through the Feather River Canyon. Otherwise very beautiful.

  • TY. it was a thrill to work on it.

  • Awesome Video,really loved it.

  • I've ridden this, we rode on te Grand Canyon railroad from William AZ to the Grand Canyon and thats the locomotive they've used to pull our trains, they've used 2 of them.

  • Is the guy still an enginer?

  • really excellent. you gave a real feel for the trip. (and the need for toilet paper).

    thanks for posting it.

  • Great video! We took the California Zephyr and then the Cardinal to Baltimore and back to the west coast. Unfortunately, I only had a digital still camera to capture video of the trip but I have the videos on my channel if you want to take a look. Next to driving across the country, Amtrak is the very best way to see America.

  • what was the consist of the train?

  • OMG dude your video has 128000 views!!!!!

  • Lovely work. Thanks!

  • love to take a train ride like that......only train I was ever on was our orig.South Shore, going to Chicago.

  • Ya don't get two amtrak locos to help the FP9, ya get more FP9s to do the work.

  • what a great video. Thanks so much for the cab footage. Covered wagons will always be my favorites! Brings back memories...

  • beautiful looking loco looked the business for pulling those gorgiuose coaches. better looking then those thing on rails monstrosoties!

  • thats an amazing multi-century story. thanks for sharing it.

  • Rode the cal zephyr while trying to hear broadcasts of nasa landing on the moon the first time, as the train wound through snake river canyon. You could almost reach out and touch the train as it curled back... amazing hazy memories.

  • What?...no ""B" unit?Those Amtrack engines kills the whole vibe.Nice video though.

  • The Amtraks look weak compared to the Zephyr

  • Wow,I sure miss the Old passenger trains, they were the best, period.Very nice Video Brings back memories when I was a kid.

  • How long was 5 delayed on this trip?lol

  • is it true that most railfans have aspergers over trains

  • @PINKluvr01 Is it true that you wouldn't know if a bus was up you until the passengers started getting off? Which, I might add, would be about the same time you would!!

    Get it, dipshit?

    Nah. Probably not!

  • @jamcgar jeeze dont be so hostile. I was just curious i didnt mean to offend ppl

  • thanks.. neat guy

  • no set times. will look around for a bulletin or magazine and will advise, glad you enjoyed it, as much as we did.

  • This is a really great video! When do they do these runs with the original cars between Reno and Emeryville?

  • yeah, GE is junk. they used to look okay, but ever since the AC6000 theres been no variation in their engines appearance wise. i wish that EMD was still the king....

  • Yeah,the only GE engines I like are from U30B,U30C to C44-9Ws

  • ex CP - VIA - exVIA! It is a chain:P

  • thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed.

  • Great video!!!!

  • a great memory. thank you for sharing it with us.

  • I rode the original California Zephyr as an 11 year old boy in 1960. My sister was a Zephyrette, and she "snuck" me on board for one of her trips from Chicago to SF (Emeryville) and back.

I did not realize that I was a "stowaway" until just a couple years ago, when I asked her who paid my way, my parents or she. She said no one paid my way; she just took me with her after her crew mates told her that she ought to do it.

I would love to hear from others who rode the original CZ.

    Tom

  • did the engineer honk the horn twice to warn ppl to get out of the way

  • sounded like the first genesis train was in dyno

  • can someone please telll me why they had two amtrak locos!!!!!!!!!!!!the zypher can pullem with ease!

  • They use two locomotives from California to Denver (they remove or add one in denver, depending on which way they are going) because they need the extra power to get through the rockies.

  • Assume you know original CZ did not go through Reno.

Anyone want to play CZ trivia? Take your pick on era, time period, etc. Try me, I double-dog dare you!!

  • LOL. no, U are tooo sharp. Yes, I know the real route. Phil gosney told me.. know him???

  • what year was the california zephyr? 70s or 60s? looks like a really old train

  • The original CZ was inaugurated March 19, 1949 and ended in 1970, a year before Amtrak. The name was held by the DRGW (they renamed the train the Rio Grande Zephyr but kept the original name) until 1983 when it turned over to Amtrak and renamed the CZ. It still runs today as an Amtrak train from Chicago to Oakland, same as the original CZ. See the whole story in the Wikipedia.

  • The only difference now is the route.

The origional California Zephyr ran up the Feather River Canyon, today it climbs over Donnor Pass.

But I don't get why it dosen't run up the Feather River Canyon any more.

  • because in 1983 it was rerouted over the former City San Francisco route after the San Francsico Zephyr was discontinued after DR&W finally gave up on passenger service.

  • Do they still run the Zephyr?

  • I rode it over from Emeryville to Sparks on the first day on the Silver Solarium

  • I was on that train nice run

  • they should bring back the bulldog nose instead of that squared off futuristic crap.

  • @307OLDS I agree the Older Engines were soo nice, well Built.

  • nice video. you should take a look at mine

  • The WP has such a sexy paint job. Amtrak should paint its equipment with the silver and orange.

  • OMG THAT~S AN AMAZING TRAIN !!

  • Outstanding video.....I REALLY enjoyed that! Thanks!!!

  • Great vid. Love the F unit cab footage.

  • isnt the locomotive at disneyland

  • no its in private ownership

  • *****Thx

  • The bell is great. And I thought only some of VIA Rails genesis and f40ph-2 locos had that bell.

  • Musta been fun!

  • Comment removed

  • Beautifully old train and loco. Why can't they build rolling works of art like that any more? It sure does look goofy with the modern amtrack cars and loco's in there though.

  • so why did they have to use the 2 additional amtrak locos?

  • maybe because since its an old diesel with 1,500hp the extra locos would help it with the heavy superliner cars

  • Too beautiful for words...

  • hot

  • That's my M5, and it still sounds good. Once in a while I get to put it on a capitol between OAK and SAC. I've got a friend with a vid of it from last year, I'll see if he can post it here. BTW, that trip sure was fun to work.

    BW

  • That was a Nathan M-5 Tony, a friend of mine voiced/restored it for the owner who let the M-5 be mounted for this trip.

  • So good to see that the engineer was a down to earth gentleman. Enjoys his job and takes pride in it.

That Nathan horn (M3?) sounds sweet and mellow.

  • He was absolutely a pleasure to talk to.

  • I enjoyed the video, and seeing the old orange and silver Western Pacific locomotive and the original Calfornia Zephyr cars brought back fond memories of my trip as a "stowaway" on the Zephyr in 1960, when I was just eleven years old. My sister, who was thirteen years older than I, was a Zephyrette, and she got an "unofficial" approval to let me take a trip with her from Chicago to San Francisco and back.

    Tom

  • glad you have such great Zephyr memories!

  • Totally sweet. Cab ride in an F7, and a ride on the original CZ cars. I'm jealous!!
