  • What is your discharge wand made of. It appears to be just a grounded rod with a 1" diameter metal sphere on the end, inside a plastic tube. I tried recreating it with similar materials but did not get anything like your discharges. Could you tell me what I was missing if anything.

  • Discharge wand was a cabinet knob with a small brass rod screwed into the threaded hole to keep the knob pointed forward. Ground wire clips to back of rod. The tube itself is one of those cheap clear plastic tubes that fit over a fluorescent bulb. The problem is that static electricity is very persnickity. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it doesn't. Could be variations in humidity.The tube tends to build up a charge like a capacitor. Try different knobs, distances from tube to terminal, etc.

  • hey man you should add a water capacitor to get longer THICKER and LOUDER arcs. Costs10 bucks or less and is suuuuuuppppeeerrrrrr easy to build. I have yet to see anyone do it.

  • Can you comment about what materials were used in the belt & for the pulleys? This looks like a particularly successful Van de Graaff generator, so I'm curious exactly how you did it. Suppliers & part numbers would be greatly appreciated!

  • bottom pulley is1" dia nylon bar stock. the top pulley is 1" dia teflon bar stock. the belt is 1/16" thk black solid neoprene rubber from an industrial rubber supply company.

  • From Grainger? I've seen that they carry those materials as bar-stock, but at the moment I haven't got access to a lathe -- the only way I can think of to put a hole through the roller properly. Did you think up a clever way to get a concentric hole through the bar, or did you have a lathe handy?

  • Don't know about Grainger. Actually bought bar stock from a retail plastics supply co like the kind that sells sheet plexiglass. I do have a lathe which I used to machine the top roller for ball bearings and the bottom one for the motor shaft and to crown the rollers slightly. Yeah, you pretty much have to have good concentricity, because the faster you can run the belt, the higher the output. I mounted the bottom roller directly on an upright vacuum cleaner motor for power and speed.

  • Hey, me again I've gotten some generators really going now, up to 6 in. i know not as great as yours , but I'm still working on it, I was wondering about your sphere, how did you cut a hole into it? or is it just resting on top of the tube there? also the neoprene belt that you use is it a rubber almost foamy material that is glued or is it a true rubber? thanks, any other tips would be great!

  • To cut the hole in the ball I drilled a 1/4" hole then used a jigsaw with a fine tooth blade(32 teeth per inch I think). Then used a 3" grinding wheel and fine sandpaper to round it out. The belt is black 1/16" solid neoprene rubber from an industrial supply place. It looks and feels like bicycle inner tube, (but innertube didn't work when I tried it). Nitrile, white neoprene, and some other surplus rubber didn't work.  Latex worked if run real fast.

    the repulsion is caused by a vector alignment of two light waves at slightly

    different frequencies their waves repels when the two waves become out of phase.

    imagine two sine waves at the top of each other on a scope when one sine wave

    pattern change wave lenght the two waves face each others northpole against each other and they repel. electromagnetic waves moves in 3 dimensions.

  • Very cool video, I made a Van de Graaff as well. Check it out on my page and tell me what you think. I really like the spark tube. What did you use for the metal part of the handle inside of the tube?

  • does the atmosphere effect the voltage shocks and stuff? because i live in trinidad and i wanna build one. will it work well in our atmosphere?

  • Humidity tends to lower the output, but I live near the coast where the humidity is high all the time and as you can see it works pretty well.

  • I used teflon upper roller. Nylon lower roller. Neoprene rubber belt. Difficult to say what works well without trying it. Grounded lower brush to the ground prong of the electrical outlet. You can also ground it to metal water pipe or a rod stuck in the ground. The faster the belt runs the higher the output. Speed is important.

  • how much is it generating coz the one at school generated 600,000 volts and onlyjumped 7cm so this must be generating a realy high voltage

  • well if it was only 7 cm you didnt let it generate ling enough. it has a 600000 volt potential, but it probably takes 45 seconds to a minute and a half to get that high. after about a minute you should feel the static at about 3 feet away.

  • you must not of heard in the video he said it was around 700,000. but the reason yours at scool was not is probably because the were not using the spark tube

  • Spark tube is a 1 1/4" clear plastic tube with a brass cabinet knob mounted on a brass rod which is grounded. The knob/rod assembly slides inside the tube for adjustment.

  • all you really need is a ball of aluminum foil attatched to some wire that goes to ground. run that through some pvc pipe and you have one. i like this guys better though. you can see the sparks

  • Ebay maybe easiest. For Teflon search PTFE ROD which is the generic term for Teflon. Nylon, which is cheaper, is actually more difficult. Search Nylon Round Rod. May have to go into Ebay stores and look. Also from yellow pages, industrial plastic suppliers in your area usually carry both. 1" dia is not magic--use 7/8 or 1 1/8 or 1 1/4 if that's what they have.

  • Wow excellent work! I'm currently working on a 5 foot model using two rimless bowls welded together, and an ion generator. I'm having a bit of trouble with my brushes. What are you using?

  • cut sections of fine copper stranded wire out of an old electric cord and solder them onto a piece of #12 or 14 solid copper wire.

  • Very fine VDG.

    This unit is certainly more powerful than maney comercial units. The type found in schools etc.

    And shows gluing together your own band is not inferior to buying a commercial one.

  • The sphere is a 12" stainless gazing ball. Hole is cut with a fine tooth jig saw. The belt is 2" wide X 1/16" neoprene strip. The ends are glued together with superglue.

  • fantastic job! what did you use for the band? and the rollers? i built one myself, a small one using 2 icecream scoops for the globe, the sparks were very small but it was powerfull enough to screw up my keyboard 4 feet away. again, great build!

  • If you think that's bad, try running a Tesla coil near electronic devices. I blew out a brand new shortwave radio that way because I left it in the same room about 12 ft away. Nice machine!

  • VDGs are fun but the electromagnetic field produced can damage nearby electronics. I found out the hard way with my home stereo. Mine throws 10-12" sparks

  • Ah, yes. You're acquainted with the EMP (electro magnetic pulse)--destroys all electrical systems within the blast radius. But it's our only weapon against the machines....After my digital alarm clock & cordless phone blew up I started grounding my discharge wands to the water pipes.

  • Tried to do a detailed desc. It's too long to post. Tried to do a really short version. It's too long to post. Lots of web sites with detailed construction info and Howto videos on Youtube. Otherwise wait for my howto video which I hadn't planned to do. Or buy a kit and use it as a springboard. Thanks.

  • Nice VDG, did you make it? Looks premade to me, but thats just because it looks really well constructed. Someone needs to make one that uses the water method and normal belt driven combined into one. That would be interesting. Link in my favorite videos if you dont know what I am talking about.
