earning about $8 a double basket load - two trips a day, so being paid more than average wage these days - I was there a few weeks ago - what a hard job.
I went there all the way to the sulfur vent back in April. I think it's the hardest manual labor job in the world. Sometimes the sulfur erupts out and the whole area becomes suddenly engulfed in sulfur cloud making you feel like you are going to die and have a heart attack. I thought it was one of the scarier more challenging treks. Obviously corruption is rife supporting such harsh work conditions for these guys. It was visisable that a militia controls that local area and these are slaves.
Been there last month and I had a lot of respect for these men. Theír legs were as strong as an ox and their shoulder development beyond belief. None of the tourists were able to lift the baskets with sulfur. And none of these miners were slacking during work.
@RayadoIvan That's half true. Actually, sulfur dioxide's main danger is that it may asphyxiate you. As well as other oxides of its kind, it combines with water, producing sulfuric acid. Albeit it may sound weird, the piece of rag they use to cover the mouth kinda "protects" you from inhaling the said oxide, but since it combines with water, it will end up making sulfuric acid, which can corrode their teeth.

There is nothing wrong with this. When a man strikes his male or female slave with a rod so hard that the slave dies under his hand, he shall be punished. If, however, the slave survives for a day or two, he is not to be punished, since the slave is his own property. (Exodus 21:20-21 NAB) Slaves, obey your earthly masters with deep respect and fear. Serve them sincerely as you would serve Christ. (Ephesians 6:5 NLT)

Have we forgotten how lucky we are here but instead making silly remarks like "They should wear a mask...blah blah blah"
These people are poor, jobless, barely making usd$5 a day to survive with their kids and family. They DO NOT have a choice.

It must not be abolished, i just has to be controled, they need gas masks and many safety things.

They dont make a gas mask that can absorb 5 hours of SO2. The sulfur itsself isnt toxic either, just the gas.

I know sulfur is not toxic, but H2SO4 is toxic.
They have to protect themselves from it.
There can also be CaSO4 in the air, it's most toxic than H2SO4.
That's why they have to use safety rules

I was over there last month watching them do this. As if the toxic fumes weren't enough, lots of them were smoking!

This should be abolished and America/Europe companies benefiting from it should be compromised.
