  • this is old russian and its in the portuguese synagogue of amsterdam

  • Great song, in a very great and original buildind ( Portuguese Jewish sinagog in Amsterdan)

Thanks from a Brazilian Jewish in rio de janeiro brazil

  • wonderful!

    Judy Isenberg

  • By the way, what is a balalaika in the sense of this song?

(Because, as far as I know it's a russian instrument, then, how does it relates to the song?)

  • @meusisto like you said a russian instrument, (the song obviously have russian influence). in the chorus they sing shpil balalaika which is mean in yiddish, play balalaika and tumbalalaika, freylekh zol zayn which mean we should be happy something like that.

  • @chanav1

Yes, that's why i asked what is a balalaika in the sense of this song. And how does it relate to this song.

    Thanks

  • Grotty

  • @ktomasz999 Nie obniżaj mi oceny ..Tobie wyslałam na dobry humor ..tylko .-to wiem kto to zrobill.

  • Oh my God, what sweet rememberings from my childwood hearing this song, my beloved mother singing it in our yard, I'm crying, please, let me cry it's so sad when you want the past to come back and realize its an impossible dream.

  • @bruguga

That's what in our language we call saudade.

  • @bruguga you know i aswell heard this song throughout my childhood my grandmother raisa used to sing to me when i was a baby

  • Maiden, Maiden tell me true. What can grow without the dew? What can burn for years and years? What can cry, and shed no tears? Listen, I've an answer for you. Stones can grow without the dew. Love can burn for years and years. Hearts can cry and shed no tears. Tumbala tumbala tumbalalaika. Tumbala tumbala tumbalalaika. Tumbalalaika tumbalalaika tumbalalaika tumbalalai.

  • SO BEAUTIFUL!!

  • Sound (a bit) like german.

  • @szabee89 it's yiddish which is actually high german mixed with sveral other german dialects

  • " Myślenie, myślenie, co zrobić? Czyje serce wziąć? Czyje serce nie do złamania? " (pol ).

  • Super!

  • Не рассмотрел я оркестр тож весь в кипах???

  • Great song, but I never understood the line about a stone can grow without rain. Perhaps, like me, they get larger and denser over time.

  • @mudsailor Probably it's like that: A stone is the perfect opposite of every living thing. Thus, if living things need rain to grow, a stone doesn't. Just my personal speculation, no guarantee.

  • where i can find the complete video?

  • FANTASTIC!!!!

  • tis song is sexy

  • @RinCentury vimeo com/8229415

  • @RinCentury

    Sexy?

  • This song ias not russian or portugese, it - East Europe jewish love folk song

  • this song is russian and not portuguese^^

  • haha, i can play this on the piano :D

  • What is the meaning of "Tumbalalaika"?

    I like this melody .

  • Well, a balalaika is a stringed instrument used in Russia. See the movie Dr. Zhivago. Maybe 'tum' means 'play'. The song is a Russian Jewish folk song. I believe I first heard it performed by Theodore Bikel. Not sure.

  • love it!!!!!!!

  • i don't like this version very much :/

  • Salaam u aleikum!

Awesome song! I love jewish music, esp.

    Klezmer.

    THIS IS SECOND-BEST VERSION.

    maiden, maiden tell me true.........

  • "Frumos" e un cuvânt sărac, ce nu poate defini ce se întâmplă în sala asta. Iar Benzion Miller este sublim.

    10000*

    Rosa Viragh from Brasil

  • eu tambem adorei

    brasileiro tem bom gosto

    e ainda idish ainda mais

  • EXCELLENCE

  • thanks

    good taste

  • what passion. It brings a tear to my eye!

  • tome also

  • For sheer concert beauty of formally trained EXCELLENCE,these cantors have it but for the true folksy quality and Yiddishkeit, I recommend Virgis Stakenas' version. He performs it in the Orthodox Jewish Tradition with no women on stage although one is singing a duet with him, she has apparently been pre-recorded elsewhere.

I also regret that this Three Cantors video ends prematurely.

  • I am fat and I can sing too. You have to be fat to support the diapragm because that is where you get the air to support your notes. The only singer in my family who wasn't large and tall was Cantor Joseph Schmidt who appears in videos on this site and he took after his mother's people. THERE IS NOTHING WRONG WITH THE WAY THESE CANTORS LOOK! You are SUPPOSED to judge them on their SINGING ability which is absolutely MAGNIFICENT!!! AMAZING TECHNIQUE AND VOICES FROM HEAVEN!

  • you are completely right

    congratulations

    shana tova

  • a wonderful version of our jiddish lidl!!!

  • shana tova

    hope you enjoy it

  • its an old jewish/russian lullaby, its not about the holocaust

  • Not a lullaby; moreso, a love song that poses a series of riddle like questions. Questions asked of one-another between a man and a woman.

  • not at all

    we need some hapiness also

    shana tova

  • Yep, it has nothing to do with Holocaust (Confused)

  • Not a lullaby; moreso, a love song that poses a series of riddle like questions. Questions asked of one-another between a man and a woman.

  • I would like to see the complete version, this song is beatiful.

  • The perform ans they did was in The Snoge in Amsterdam, Holland. From the whole concert they made a dvd.

  • did they? where can I find it? what's the name?

  • I don't like much the yiddish language, but this version of the song is genius.

  • Girl, may I ask

    What can grow without rain?

    What can burn forever?

    What can cry without tears?

Foolish boy, why do you ask?

    A stone grows without rain

    Love can burn forever

    A heart cries without tears

    Or something

  • thanks

    a litle late

    shana tova

  • A young lad is thinking, thinking all night

Would it be wrong, he asks, or maybe right,

Should he declare his love, dare he choose,

And would she accept, or will she refuse?

  • what does it mean?I love the music

  • It's a song in Yiddish. If I'm not mistaken it's about a boy/teen worried and deep in thought.
