@Jean0987654321 There are other programs that work much better with the Xbox. I don't own a console, but I thought XBMC was a popular one. It converts the files in real time for streaming to your TV so you don't have to mess with all of this.

@edster86 The resolution of your video has to be correct or you'll get the letterbox. Encode your video at 1280x720 with square pixels and you shouldn't get black bars.

First of all, great video. I wanted to know if you found a way to make Anamorphic work on HandBrake since a newer version is out(0.9.4)? If you so, can you tell please tell me how? The small black letter box on the top and bottom of my iPod Touch bugs me when I'm watching movies. Thanks in advance.

can you tell me if you can convert movies in mediacode without converting it in handbrake first? so, let say i've downloaded a movie from limewire (not ipod/iphone converted); can i convert it with mediacode right away? thanks

@efhqjtrhaqte You only need one. They are two different programs that do the same thing. I think MediaCoder is a little easier to use, but HandBrake is more powerful if you know how to use it.

you dont need to mess with "crop" settings unless your source video has black bars .. and im pretty sure that x264 watchmen rip doesnt have any..

also get the full edition and go to resize and click 480x320 and leave the crop settings alone.. then go to set display AR and set it to 3:2

itll resize the video to the whole screen but i dunno why youd like that, i prefer the black bars over a stretched image

HandBrake has versions for Windows, Mac, and Linux. I would recommend HandBrake for anyone.

Just remember you also have to install VLC Media Player if you want DVD-ripping functionality (VLC has a Mac version, too).

You can run Bootcamp or VMWare Fusion to run just about any PC app I do it all the time on my Mac

i have a question, i'm pretty new to the conversion stuff. . .but i'm attempting to convert a movie to a format that can be burned to a dvd properly. . .is there any specifics i should know? and i used handbrake to convert an entire 37 episode season of an animated series for my ipod. . .it worked for 36. . . .but now it closes moments after i open it?

Hello, Great tutorial here! I'm gonna try it out as soon as i finish downloading. The video is still playing as i'm typing this, but just out of curiousity, is there any video format that this program cannot convert? I have a couple .avi or .mkv videos here i'd like to try out so i hope these work.

The file I transcoded in this video was an MKV, so those work just fine. I'd be shocked if it isn't compatible with AVI's as well.

Just so you know, HandBrake 0.9.4 has been released since I made this video. HandBrake is my favorite transcoder of the group, and the new version handles anamorphic widescreen beautifully. Definitely worth a look if you're checking out different programs.

So far I managed to successfully convert an animated video, and it works on itunes and my iTouch. There's only one problem though...

It looks like the animation is running way faster than the audio (as well as the subtitles). Might there be some settings that I'd forgotten to tweak?

I *think* that can happen when you change the framerate of your video. In other words, if you're going from a 24fps source and converting to 30fps or something like that.

There are ways around it, but I've never had that problem. You'd probably be better off searching some forums.

@jehutys5 It might also be the software you use to play the files on your phone.

I installed mediaplayer but realized it was causing the chug in some episodes, ive found the best way to play videos is using the default Ipod application, everything runs alot smoother.

Hey! Great video! I do have a little thing that might help. Sometimes, it doesn't fully get rid of the letterbox effect. So, what you do is hit auto-detect like you do, but then, hit Free Cropping, and make it divisable by 1, and crop it right to the edge, for best results, thats what I do.

But, is it just me, or does the video go a little bit brighter than the original?

UPDATE: I have managed to put together a string to create Anamorphic Widescreen using the HandBrake CLI. Anyone is free to copy my settings, but you should only consider them a starting point. The CLI requires moderate knowledge of computers to use. The next comment will contain my code.
