  • @MattsMacintosh, echoing what @SuperEnigmation commented on: are you able to edit video in 1080p using iMovie for the iPad? I surmise if that's possible, you'd need SSD storage large enough to hold HD video in the iPad.

  • I like dropbox better for exporting video I used it with my iPod for a school project and its faster then connecting via the 30pin cable to your Mac. I found it a better solution for a iMovie workflow.

  • I just bought an apple tv last night and i have an ipad 2 running on ios5. Could i simply pop in the camera connection kit along with my sd card and watch it straight on the apple tv without even bothering to import the videos to the ipad first? Thanks!

  • I personally really wish iMovie on the Mac was as simple as iMovie on the iPad, with extended options available incase they are needed. iMobie should be more approachable, as it is on the iPad. I don't see why they try to make it so complex, when anyone who wants to make professional videos will get Final Cut Pro.

  • Must say I love the way you make your vids...

  • I think this might be the reason of the "Import from iMovie" feature in FCPX, so people can edit on the go and finish it when they get home?!

  • Wallpaper??

  • does the camera connection kit work with the iPhone, and iPod touch?

  • decided to be the first to use the reaction feature, don't be shy people! INCREDIBLE MATT!

  • I wish there was iCloud integration with iMovie. Then, we could send project files without a cable or to iTunes whatsoever. :)

  • Can you edit 1080p files or will the files be stepped down to 720p?

  • @flappy1114 It does 1080P

  • @MattsMacintosh Being that said, can the iPad export video in 1080P?

  • Matt, you are awesome! I love to watch your videos and I check your YouTube channel everyday for new videos. I've noticed that in every one of your videos, you pronounce a word funny or jumble words together, like when you said "automamicly" in this video. I know that everyone does that sometimes, but when making a professional video like the ones you are so good at, please try to keep yourself from jumbling your words together. I hope I'm being helpful.

  • I think they should release Final Cut for iPad. Obviously not with all the features, but something slightly more advanced than iMovie for iPad. I'm glad this has been introduced though, I got a camera connection kit for my birthday yesterday.

  • @tombomdoodle I'm sure they'll update iMovie to be more functional rather than port over FCP to iPad. At least that would make more sense initially. When the iPad gets more processing power and so on down the road maybe we'll see the merging of more desktop based software optimised for tablets. There's still things you need the mouse and keyboard for though right now, and doing precision editing with FCP is one of them. The future will be interesting though!

  • Wow awesome!

  • Even though I'm a PC user its this type of integration that I envy from Apple products

  • Love it! But, what is that kit called? What company? Where could I order it?

  • @benghaith Apple sell it in their retail stores and online store. I'm sure you can find it on Amazon too if you prefer shopping there.

  • Finally i'll be able to put that connection kit to use!

  • @marlonsison I love it how Apple do seemingly "what the? why bother?" things, then things slowly slot into place and it makes complete sense. I'm betting this was a huge part of the reason you could easily import iMovie files to Final Cut Pro X for example. I just like how they gradually integrate everything together, it makes using their products all the more pleasurable. I wish other companies did this with their products. This is one reason Apple "wins". It's an ecosystem, not a sole device.

  • What is better, Final Cut Pro or Premiere Pro?

  • @MattJTV It all depends. I would say that if you are a heavy CS5 user Premiere Pro is the way to go because of the integration. Otherwise, I recommend FCP to most people. Both are really great and I don't think either would be a bad choice.

  • But, can you start on your Mac and then catch the plane and finish your edit with the iPad?

  • Great video! Is that part of iOS 5? Or an update to the iMovie application?

  • Great!

  • Is that your bird?

  • Great Video!! Matt I have a question. I am having a horrible time editing with Final Cut PRO X since I put lion in. I just started playing with Chroma keying. A 45 second 1080p 29.97 clip took a over 3 hours to render after applying the keying effect. If I tried to do anything else I would just get the beach ball so I left it till the job was done. Should it take that long? I have a iMAC 2.66 GHz i5 8 GB of 1067 MHz DDR3 ram.

  • @CallMeRitchie Sounds a bit odd, but it depends on your settings. It can take that kind of time to render out a few seconds of footage in a full feature length film on 12 core Mac Pro's or even render farms. Remember, while it may lack some features now, FCPX is still a pro editor and you can output insane quality footage from it, so I'd check your export settings to see if you've pumped the quality up a little higher than you really need. Using Compressor can help fine tune things too.

  • Does it work on an original iPad?

  • As in no need to import or have a camera connect.

  • Matt could we use the eyefi X2 with a DSLR and the iPad?!?! Thanks again for the awesome update bro!

  • @chazzico Aye, there's a bunch of apps that make use of that kind of set up. Great for studio shoots and so on. Just keep on taking shots and shoot a JPG version of the image over to the iPad for near instant viewing on a larger screen. Terry White from Adobe showed off such a set up in one of his video podcasts, i forget the name of the app he used though off the top of my head.

  • I would like to ask does it support avchd on iPad???

  • You should call your video: iPad To Mac Video Workflow

  • Now i just need an SLR... and an iPad....and a Mac :P

  • Wait. I dont see in comments that "Andoid alderady has that"...

  • are you back home now?

  • @Macintoshmani12 Nope. In fact, I don't really have a home to go back to right now; all my stuff is in storage.

  • @MattsMacintosh Why's everything in storage?

  • Hey Matt ,, how about a review for the Macbook Air ?? Thanks !!

  • Thank you so much finally this is really helpful I was waiting for something like this because I was going to go with a Toshiba

  • What's with that picture in the last 2 seconds?

  • Whoa! This is so AWESOME! I can finally view my 60D videos on my iPad :D

  • Thanks, I'll try it out. That was helpful.

  • would this work with an iPhone? say an iPhone 4s

  • My digital camera uploads video to iMovie on iPad just fine, but my video camera can't. Keep in mind that though DSLR cameras can record video, they are not TRUE video cameras. My video camera works with Final Cut Pro and iMovie on the Mac, but won't transfer video to iMovie on the iPad.

  • @EPS5000 Many modern DSLR's are very competent video cameras to be fair. A lot of serial TV shows are shot using them for location shots outdoors for example. They're also brilliant for using the depth of field effect without the need for the more expensive easier to break lenses you'd require for the dedicated video cameras. They're also more popular for scenes where the camera may potentially be destroyed and for tight spots. Also a lot of video cameras use DSLR sensors these days too.

  • @TalesOfWar Yeah the thing about DSLR's is that you can make it seem more cinematic for a fraction of the price. If one were to do general home movies then a camcorder would be good but for film students, like myself, and other people who have hobbies in artistic filmmaking (as opposed to just Michael Bay type sequences!) then DSLR's are a great way to go (Loving my 600D!).

  • @TalesOfWar I still hold firm the belief that DSLR cameras aren't true video cameras. So let's agree to disagree. Also, a lot of filmmakers that switched from analogue to digital video cameras use RED. RED cameras can do the work of older, more expensive, cameras for a fraction of the cost (around $10,000). I don't know too many professional filmmakers that would even consider using a camera whose primary function is taking pictures (i.e., DSLR cameras)

  • @EPS5000 DSLR's are quite popular among documentary makers an TV show makers, for the outdoor stuff like I said before. They're a good deal cheaper than a RED camera and fit in more places so you have a higher selection of possible shots. Full on films, nope, not as common, but stuff made for TV is an area where they're gaining a lot of traction, not to mention folk on YouTube. As you see from Matt's work you really can produce something of quality.

  • awesome Feature! Thanks Matt'

  • Can u do the same on the iPhone

  • Great vid...can you tell me will the iPad now allow importing of .mp4 files from

Say a GO PRO and allow you to edit the files...thanks

  • @J273 hmm... good question. I'll test it out later today.

  • @J273 If it's a supported format I see no reason why not.

  • The mic sound spacey.

  • Now i just need an SLR... and an iPad... :P

  • Or you can bring your Macbook on the airplane xD

  • @CPUXmcXDivine Which takes more space, weighs more, and security are generally more suspicious of laptops than iPads.

  • Shit that's fucking awesome!!!! O_O

    Android tablets say what? Yeah...

  • This should work through iCloud!

  • not on the ipad 1 :(

  • I can hear you perfectly I have no idea what other people are talking about

  • Nice video

  • And that software is only going to get better and better, until one day, you can put sony vegas quality softare on there :o)

  • Great

  • Great video !

  • Very nice! The iPad really does appeal to so many!

  • does it only work with dslr videos? what video cameras are supported?

  • fuck, this is what i needed a few months ago. too bad i sold my ipad, if it had this feature then i would have kept it

  • That is, uh, one of the greatest things to ever happen. Ever. Now all I need is an iPad! :D

  • what would be nice would be if they made iMovie for iPad more like the desktop version and added way more features

  • iMovie app only works on the iPad 2. Not the first gen iPad.

  • Amazing Video, what an awesome new update!

  • Hey matt whats your favorite apps for the ipad? just picked one up the other day!

  • can i get imovie on my ipad1?

  • @MattsMacintosh what camera are you using to record your video??????

  • @kishangallery Mostly the Canon 60D

  • Can u do this on your iPhone 4s?

  • Matt, I seriously need to learn how to make videos like you. Just so pro

  • I have been seriously considering weather to save up for an iPad or a MacBook and this answers my question, the only thing which held me back from buying the iPad was the fact that you couldn't edit and import external footage, I think I will wait for the next generation iPad, just so it will be a little more powerful then get it! Thank you so much for sharing this Matt!

  • Too bad the iMovie app it's only for the iPad 2 :[

  • so, this is another reason to not have to connect your iPad, and now camera, to your computer!!

  • Great video, but I have a question. If i had an iPad 1st generation, could I buy iiMovie on it, and use my DSLR footage?

  • Nice, I'll have to try this with my Nikon.

  • @DetroitBORG I think it should work. I'm pretty sure they expanded to support all H.264 formats

  • Nice Video! I love iMovie on my iPad!

  • Nice

  • Thats awesome!

If I had an iPad it would be even better!

  • Great Job as always matt

  • 20th reproduccion

  • awesome function and helpfull

  • Under 20 club!

  • 4th

  • Nice Video!

  • first! :D
