Bart Ehrman makes a good point when he says that if God could make sure that the original texts of the NT were preserved from error he could make sure that the subsequent copies of the NT texts would continue to be preserved from error. God is, after all, omnipotent and omnibenevolent. There is sufficent evidence to prove that the NT texts were not preserved from subsequent error; and therefore there does appear to be a problem for Christian belief in these texts.

Dr. Evans is good at dancing around the issues. Time after time he fails to answer the points that Dr Ehrman makes. Instead he asserts things that have not even been debated.
Just because they don't match line by line just shows that the authors write what they want. They don't all put in the same content since they have different purposes, content they knew, and time they had to spend writing - let alone what they actually remembered. If they all matched, you and I would think that they were just copies or a fakes. Eye witness yes, 2nd party is also good.

The fact there are discrepancies (obvious discrepancies) indicate the existence of errors in the bible. What other errors are there? The descriptions of the resurrections in the four gospels are contradictory and irreconcilable. At the very least, three of the descriptions are forged. Most probably, all four are forged. There's all kinds of harmony in the gospels. If one person wrote them, then why didn't he make them exactly the same? If several authors wrote the gospels, then why do they have so many similar stories? Ehrman is typical of theorists. They think themselves into a corner. For every theorist in any field there's always someone with just as many degrees with totally contrary viewpoints.

For over 45 years I have struggled with the concept of religious beliefs. The evidence for religious practices dates back several hundred thousand years and continues today, Christianity alone have some 30,000 franchises. I understand the invention of gods may have been a practical tool for the development of early social lifestyles and an mythological explanation of natural events but with our current and growing understanding of medical,scientific,and natural reality,why do we need it?

I am an atheist and I have no problems with the idea that a historical Jesus existed. The questions were very slanted in one direction in this debate. When you get into the parts of the bible that focus on the miracles and the resurrection it become a whole different story. If there is a god who created our Universe it would be a highest insult to this being to say he had any thing to do with the immoral bible. Religion is a political tool used to control the masses.

I am currently reading Ehrman's book about forgery and it is awesome. He's not a very charismatic speaker, I'm afraid. Of course Evans is merely playing the audience, trying to win sympathy by putting in a good word for "The Bible" and "Jesus." I couldn't sit through this. But Ehrman's book is awesome.

There is only one interpretation of the bible there are many transliterations but only one interpretation. Luke was not a disciple he was more like a modern day Sherlock Holmes meaning Luke went around interviewing people of that day to find out who and what Jesus was so the "discrepancy" regarding the genealogy is not really a contradiction since Luke was not an eyewitness and did not know Christ personally but simply investigated Christ so we can believe Matthews account over Lukes
the bible does not misquote Jesus It has minor errors like spelling, grammer, ect but there are no contradictions in the bible specifically the synoptic gospels which complement not contradict each other. Dont be fooled by Dr Erhmans $ensationalist view. @2black4bet How can you say the gospels don't contradict each other? On what day did Jesus die? Mark says it was after passover; John says it was before passover. That's not a grammatical, spelling or misc error. It is a clear contradiction, and it is one of many contradictions.
Before I answer let me ask you a question If somewhere there was on record that you died on Christmas and somewhere else it says you died on Christmas Eve or one of the 12 days of Christmas but not the 26th does that mean you never existed? The "confusion" around the death of Christ centers around when the passover was celebrated. the Galileans for example celebrated Passover one day before Judeans I'd suggest you do some research on the Jewish passover before u believe the $ensationalist
@2black4bet The answer is no...such a contradiction wouldn't prove I didn't exist. But neither I nor the two debaters are arguing that Jesus didn't exist. The question is: are there contradictions? And there are. Therefor should such sources be deemed reliable. The answer is no. And you can characterize the date of Jesus' death as "Confusion". But doesn't that reinforce the argument that the gospels are not reliable historical sources. If they were, there would be no confusion.
@scott797 Just a slight discrepancy due to a different interpretation of when the sabbath celebration should begin. History shows us that this disagreement between the two Jewish sects was settled by just celebrating on both days So there is no real solid contradiction here If my family starts celebrating Christmas on the 25th and yours the 26th and i then reported an event which happened on the 26th but instead of giving a date I just said it happened "on Christmas" that is not a contradiction

When did jesus drive the money lenders from the temple? What were his last words on the cross? I agree in term of theology these are insignificant...but in terms of historicity they are significant, I think.

Ehrman is an unmitigated fraud. His so-called "research into the discrepancies and contradictions" of the Christian scriptures is nothing more than a warmed-over retread of the higher criticism of the German schools of the 18th and 19th century. This leads me to believe that those who now hail Ehrman's banal rehashing of an outdated philology as fascinating and seminal are either disingenuous haters or intellectually bankrupt poseurs suffering from a bad case of scholarly amnesia.

@cryctalite08 there are many copies but not all copies make the same minor errors so if we examine each copy in light of each other we can get back to the original God preserved his word without our knowledge over time If there was only one copy then evil men could get there hands on it and make major changes which has been done only there are thousands of copies so we can recognize that for instance the bible thomas Jefferson wrote is not the word of authentic word of God

What I think is irrelevant. We can test a man's words against what God's Law declares. Neither of these men speak Biblical Truth, therefore their testimony is corrupt. Bart Ehrman makes a good point when he says that if God could make sure that the original texts of the NT were preserved from error he could make sure that the subsequent copies of the NT texts would continue to be preserved from error. God is, after all, omnipotent and omnibenevolent. There is sufficent evidence to prove that the NT texts were not preserved from subsequent error; and therefore there does appear to be a problem for Christian belief in these texts.

The fact there are discrepancies (obvious discrepancies) indicate the existence of errors in the bible. What other errors are there? The descriptions of the resurrections in the four gospels are contradictory and irreconcilable. At the very least, three of the descriptions are forged. Most probably, all four are forged. There's all kinds of harmony in the gospels. If one person wrote them, then why didn't he make them exactly the same? If several authors wrote the gospels, then why do they have so many similar stories? Ehrman is typical of theorists. They think themselves into a corner. For every theorist in any field there's always someone with just as many degrees with totally contrary viewpoints.
Ehrman must have gotten some silver for all the discord he's sown. I don't think he had faith to begin with.

Bart Ehrman is an honest, hardworking Bible scholar. He is to be respected and trusted, without forgetting -of course- that *all* claims must be treated with skepticism and should be independently verified, including his. The one thing I have trouble with, is his shouting. He yells and screams like a preacher, and that makes it difficult to listen to him. That is a pity.

When you get into the parts of the bible that focus on the miracles and the resurrection it become a whole different story. If there is a god who created our Universe it would be a highest insult to this being to say he had any thing to do with the immoral bible. Religion is a political tool used to control the masses.

I am currently reading Ehrman's book about forgery and it is awesome. He's not a very charismatic speaker, I'm afraid. Of course Evans is merely playing the audience, trying to win sympathy by putting in a good word for "The Bible" and "Jesus." I couldn't sit through this. But Ehrman's book is awesome.

the bible does not misquote Jesus It has minor errors like spelling, grammer, ect but there are no contradictions in the bible specifically the synoptic gospels which complement not contradict each other. And there are. Therefor should such sources be deemed reliable. The answer is no. And you can characterize the date of Jesus' death as "Confusion". But doesn't that reinforce the argument that the gospels are not reliable historical sources. If they were, there would be no confusion.

History shows us that this disagreement between the two Jewish sects was settled by just celebrating on both days So there is no real solid contradiction here If my family starts celebrating Christmas on the 25th and yours the 26th and i then reported an event which happened on the 26th but instead of giving a date I just said it happened "on Christmas" that is not a contradiction

When did jesus drive the money lenders from the temple? What were his last words on the cross? Ehrman is an unmitigated fraud. His so-called "research into the discrepancies and contradictions" of the Christian scriptures is nothing more than a warmed-over retread of the higher criticism of the German schools of the 18th and 19th century. This leads me to believe that those who now hail Ehrman's banal rehashing of an outdated philology as fascinating and seminal are either disingenuous haters or intellectually bankrupt poseurs suffering from a bad case of scholarly amnesia.

The endless claim for the Bible is that it is the "Word of God", but any honest person knows the Bible has many mistakes and additions to it. Either God is a really crappy author, or men made and wrote the Bible, with all its errors.

The Bible referes to them as the Wise, Sheep, Gold, Wheat, etc. By default, all others, who serve the god of THIS world, Satan. The Bible refers to them as fools, goats, hay, weeds, etc. God's Rule is Absolute and cannot be thwarted. The Lord will destroy Satan, and his followers, stating in 20 weeks WITHOUT MERCY.

Man made religion is defective. They worship objects, writings of men, the dead, etc. There is only ONE Living, Eternal God, the Lord Jesus Christ. Unless the Lord has personally hand picked you, paid your sin debt, and GIVEN you a new, eternal soul, you don't belong to Him. These qualifications only apply to about 1-2% of the human race, since Creation. The Bible is Perfect, as ALL the Words are the Lord's. The defect is sin-cursed man's faulty understanding.

You reveal how little you know about Biblical history. Every Word in God's Law Book came from the mouth of eternal God (Jere 36). Men were only scribes. Human history was the unfolding of God's Salvation plan for His People. This earth has a scheduled existence of 13,023 years, of which 13,022.5+ years have already expired. Man will be extinct in 42 weeks. Where is Ehrman the 'scholar'? NO CLUE!

No, but God as the Holy Spirit, has qualified me to declare His Word. A GIFT only about 1-2% of the human race would ever be GIVEN. The warning of May 21, 2011 has been broadcast world wide in 56 languages for over 3 years now. Google it. Thousands of other Messengers are declaring the same Biblical time, but the Lord Himself must open a persons eyes to the Message (Luke 8:10; 24:45; etc). We all don't have equal access to Biblical Truth. Your end is near.

There is only ONE Way. That Way is the Way of Eternal God, the Lord Jesus Christ. "I AM the Way, the Truth, and the Life...". Everything outside of God's Way will be destroyed in 136 days. That being the case, does your opinion matter? Does my opinion matter? No. God's Will prevails over us all. You will learn this the hard way in 19 weeks as you lose everything you think you have. Pray for mercy, if your pride will allow you to. Your only hope.
