Part of this video looks like a CBS documentary in the 50s that my Dad was involved with. He was in the 310 bomb wing in Kansas. He has a still photo that looks an awful lot like the shot of the B-47 refueling from the KC-97 at :47. Also, at :02 the 47 taxis around a Korean War Vintage RB-26C (the black twin engine propeller driven bomber), which Dad also flew in Korea. In WWII they were called A-26, but redesignated as B-26 for Korea to satisfy NATO restrictions on aircraft type.
Those are awesome jets! I can;t but notice they look almost like the tomacat fighter jet.Cold war era aircraft were cool and it's too bad they didn't last long.
I WORKED RB47s OUT OF FORBES AFB 1956 TO 1960 TDY YOKOTO AFB TOOK PICTURE OF RB47H 34294 THAT WAS LATER SHOT DOWN OVER BERANT SEA JULY 1960 THE COPILOT AND NAVIGATOR GOT OUT PILOT AND 3 ECM OPERATORS KILLED I WORKED THE GUNNERY SYSTEM I MET THE CO PILOT IN ANNAPOLIS HE SAID HE KILLED TWO MIGS GAVE HIM PICTURE OF PLANE I TOOK OVER JAPAN FROM A KC97 REFUEL
@1georg57 Awesome sir! Powered by J-47 turbojet engines.... Am I correct? I was assigned to NWC China Lake in the early 80s and fabricated over 500 fuel hoses for the engines on a B-47 brought out of the desert (it had been there for climate testing for 20 years). It made a one-time flight over the Sierra mountain range to Castle Air Force Base Museum. Most proud of that.
The Cold War began Because of the Berlin Blockade. We advanced money and equipment to the Soviets during WW2. Stalin's and his successors' lust for power was the cause of the arms race.
"In its early years it was invulnerable". Not quite. There was one well documented recon flight over the USSR by a B-47 and to the crew's surprise, they were intercepted by MiG17s and shot at. US intel told them that the Soviets didn't have the capability to touch them. Great aircraft though.
BULLCRAP!! We opposed them because they were COMMUNISTS!! You had your free world, of by and for the people, and you had your jackboot totalitarian COMMUNIST world, of by and for the party where the secret police came in the night and took you away!! And they promoted world revolution knocking over weak governments and installing puppet dictatorships. If they could have invaded western europe, they most assuredly would have! Please shove your history revisionism up a convinient orifice!
The Sovjet-Union had an aircraft of similar capabilities from 1953 onwards: the TU-16. The american dominance in the field of strategic bombers suggested here was not that overwhelming.
didnt need it with the B-52 being in for another 40 years, the B-2 being stealth and the B-1 being a supersonic bomber(also the bomber that carrys the most for the US) we simply didn't need them

The B-47 was the ancestor of almost all modern jet transport (except the Concorde) It's original innovations remain in today's aviation.

the icbm and slbm killed manned bombers...or at least relegated them to tactical missions...

"do not need"
They are perfect in strike!
Intercontinental bomber - it is one class, strategic - another.
A country need both.
But I agree with you in that US didn't need it too much to spend money for it.
But they used F-111 as a medium-range strike bomber. But this machine could not be compared with Backfire.
But know ... well, Russia is going also to lose this class of airplanes - not enough money!

I have a question - why US stopped building medium-range 100 tonn class bombers?
I think because they did not have enought brain to make smth simular to Backfire.
B-47 was a german development. US could not make smth own and good!

"there was no invasion of europe because of B-47"
But since 1946 there were plans of nuclear strikes against USSR.
Cold war was started by US and still there are lots of Americans who hate Russia just for it is Russia.
